Boyfriend playing video games until 2am every night is severely impacting my sleep

I’m 27F and he’s 30M. I don’t have a problem with him occasionally staying up to play video games but he just got into a new game and it’s been every night and it’s starting to impact my sleep.

I fall asleep around 10:30-11 and he will come in at 2 am, turn on every light which wakes me up and then get into bed and tries to cuddle with me. I know for him he thinks he’s being cute and loving and affectionate but it’s just disruptive to me and frankly annoying because we had hours beforehand to cuddle but he couldn’t be away from the games for more than five minutes.

Tonight I had to tell him not to cuddle me when he got into bed and it made him very upset/sad but like… if I’m being honest it’s only benefitting him, it’s actively detrimental to me. Separate beds aren’t an option because we don’t have the space or money and I would never make him sleep on the couch but I’m not sure of what else to do.

Edit: do people not read posts anymore? What do you think I told him when I told him not to cuddle me when he got into bed? That it was because of my sleep!!! lol, I did “communicate” this with him. He got upset and sad.

Didn't expect breakfast timing to affect my nights, but it seemed to

Upvotes

Not claiming this fixes insomnia, mine's been going on over a year. Always assumed the fix, if there was one, had to happen at night, so I never once looked at my mornings.

Ended up eating breakfast at the same time daily for a totally unrelated reason, just trying to fix my chaotic schedule. Took weeks before I even noticed my nights felt less random. Turns out consistent meal timing is apparently one of the cues your body uses to set its internal clock, same category as morning light, which quietly affects when you wind down later.

Still get bad nights, this didn't fix anything overnight. But it changed how I think about where the problem actually starts.

Anyone else assume it was only a nighttime thing until something else shifted it?

Why do I always wake up 10 minutes before my alarm goes off?

I rarely set alarms, and if I do, they’re always at a completely different time. Today, I set an alarm for 7:30, and, of course, I woke up at 7:20. They’re never just some minutes before, it’s always 10 minutes. Why is that?

Hatch 3 - free version

Upvotes

I would never be considering a clock that urges you to pay a subscription, the only thing that I like is the ability to change my alarms on the go through the app.

I have a set waking up schedule for work, but sometimes on certain days I prefer to change my alarm depending on how late I go to bed.

How annoying is the app and overall product with the free version?

Anyone else keep waking up around 3am?

I usually fall asleep pretty easily, but lately I keep waking up around 3am and then I’m just lying there wide awake for ages. I’ve been looking into the Hypnozan 8H Program and was wondering if anyone here with the same problem has actually tried it and noticed any difference.

Waking up before the alarm goes off

I know heaps of people struggle with this but I always wake up minutes before my alarm no matter what time it’s set.

Throughout high school I used to struggle with sleep so badly. Now I’m lucky enough to sleep through the night, but as a working adult, I wake up 5-10 mins before my alarm EVERY SINGLE WEEKDAY. It feels like I’m being robbed of sleep and because I’m stubborn I try go back to sleep for the small amount of time before my alarm and end up feeling more tired and grumpy than I did waking up naturally.

It doesn’t just happen on weekdays. I don’t like sleeping in because I feel like I’m wasting the day, so I set alarms for the weekends too and STILL I wake up a few minutes before my alarm. If I take a nap and set a timer, I wake up a few minutes beforehand. If I’m on holiday and set an alarm I still wake up shortly beforehand. Even when I’m cooking, I set a timer and when I check it there’s often a minute or less remaining.

Google says it’s just my circadian rhythm which I guess makes sense for my work schedule but I cannot comprehend why or how this happens with every single alarm or timer. I can’t escape this and feel tortured by my permanently aware body.

Trouble sleeping any help?

Hello!

I’m a 19 year old male in college and this only started happening recently at the start of summer break a couple months ago. During the day around like 3pm I get randomly super super exhausted like I can fall asleep any second but I know if I fall asleep then I’ll wake up to early and mess up my sleep schedule so I always push for 9-12pm to fall asleep but by that time I’m randomly like not tired I think? My brain can’t stop thinking about stuff about death what it’s like and how I’m scared of it about my family members about random stuff as well i just can’t stop thinking and reach a sleepy state, even though i could Harv fallen asleep super fast earlier in the day. This also leads to me not getting much sleep because i have to wake up early for classes and also sometimes i wake up in the morning and the same racing thoughts happen again. I also take trazodone (half a pill) and it is still not helping, it’s very on and off it used to work very well for like 3 nights but now I barely feel anything.

Sleep Anxiety

It's already 4 AM here i still not able to get sleep this is happening since last 2- 3years.

No matter how i close my eyes i dont sleep i hardly sleep for 4-5 hours.

I have so much negative thoughts when night start , i fear of supernatural things & entities & whole night I keep going washroom bcz of fear & I feel something will happens with me whenever I go to washroom like encounter with entities.

I also fear about my future while sleeping & many times i wakes up at 3 about anxiety of future.i feel i am not doing anything worth & I can't imagine my future doing anything worth. I think I am wasting this human resources & life someone else deserve this life who really need & has goal.

I just use reddit & x or watch any movie or podcast to pass my time at night to divert my mind from thinking.

I just can't bear night always waiting when will sun arise & I feel relieved.

I think at this rate bcz of all this i will get some dangerous mental disease.

Can't tell this to family they will not understand they will take my phone so I will not able to divert my mind .

I got dark circles around my eyes bcz of not sleeping properly from 2 years & my face looks dull all day.

I have tried to sleep using YouTube sleeping music & listen various podcast to divert my mind during night but nothing worked for me.

I am leaving in joint & orthodox family they will not understand to consult this to any psychiatrist.

I want to sleep like others 😭

I feel how PPL who sleeps so much are lucky .

How to stay awake during the day?

I have been a napper my whole entire life. Whether I get 10+ hours of sleep or as little as four, I will almost always take a daily nap. Now, this wasn't as much of a problem in high school but now I am in my second year of college and just started RT school. I cannot be napping as much as I am.

I also just started a new job where I have to go in between 5-7 am. It is a part time job, so the hours themselves aren't horrible, but it means I'm getting up at least an hour before the start time with class later in the day. This doesn't even factor in study time, making meals, etc.

What makes it even worse is that naps are usually how I give myself a break from life. When I take a nap I sleep HARD (very different than being an extremely light sleeper at night), so it can be a 15 minute nap or a two hour nap and I still wake up groggy, slow, and disoriented.

I drink plenty of water throughout the day, I get outside, I try to avoid large amounts of caffeine, I take a multi-vitamin in the morning, etc. I understand that I'm going to be tired, and I especially know I shouldn't be taking as long of naps as I normally do. I need any advice that anyone can give me, I don't care how outrageous it is.

I'd also like to point out that I can fall asleep wherever and whenever, so sitting at a table or anything like that most likely won't help.

It might also be worth it to note that I take sleep when I'm bored too

What time do you go to sleep & wake up on work days and non-work days? Also how long commute to work and do you use public transport or drive?

Sleeping the full eight hours and still waking up flat

Duration isn’t the problem, I’ve tracked it long enough to be sure. It’s that I wake up feeling like I’ve had five hours regardless. I’ve done the obvious hygiene things, no screens, cool room, consistent times, and none of it moved the needle. At what point does this stop being a sleep problem and become something worth getting looked at properly?

How can I stop viewing sleep as a chore?

For a large portion of my life, I have not had a dedicated sleep pattern. “Revenge Bedtime Procrastination” is a thing that I would regularly partake in. Either I would stay up late or go to sleep and wake up early in the morning and use my phone even before the sun rises. Every day, I would be exhausted and wonder why…

Now that I am older [23M], I realise that sleep is kind of important. For the past 2 weeks, I have tried to have a consistent sleep schedule of:

unwinding at 8 p.m.,
sleep routine at 9 p.m.,
being in bed by 9:30 p.m.,
asleep by 10 p.m.,
wake up at 7 a.m.

I have started to avoid naps [sometimes I fail and take a 30 - 60 minute nap] and I have started to integrate an exercise routine into my day to increase sleep pressure. BUT there is still a lingering idea/feeling I have in regards to sleep. I feel it as a chore, and most days I feel dread about sleep. I view it as wasted time even if logically I know that it is very important for body function and health.

The main questions I have are as follows:
- Has anyone else had a similar experience?
- How did you end up combatting this problem?
- If anyone is well versed in sleep health, what recommendations do you have for me?

Issues with temperature

For a long time I have been having issues with heat impacting my sleep. I don't know whether its just a problem for me or whether its my room.

I have a digital thermometer I keep in my room to track the temperature. The issue I've been having is that my room heats up rapidly when the sun rises and the rapid rise in temperature wakes me up and stops me going back to sleep. A lot of the time this results in me getting less sleep then I require and thus I end up tired all day. There is a slight possibility its just the high temperature thats waking me up but im like 80% sure the specific problem is rising temperature and not just high temperature in general. My room has floor to ceiling windows, so an entire wall is basically just windows. I do have curtains but they are not very good curtains that have gaps in them so for example my curtains can be closed but if its sunny it'll be bright enough that I can still see everything in my room without needing to turn on the light.

I will give an example of today. I wanted to sleep till 8am, I woke up at 6:30am after tossing and turning for a while and feeling too warm. The sky was somewhat overcast, my thermometer said it was 17.5 degrees Celsius (63.5f) while the weather app on my phone said it was 13 degrees c outside (55.4f). Im not sure why there's a difference but its a thing i encounter a lot. As I was messing around on my phone writing all this down, so like 2 - 5 minutes, I watched as the thermometer climbed to 17.9 degrees c (64.22f). Again i think its the rising heat that wakes me up not so much the high heat. I did have the AC on but it goes down to 18 at the lowest so it probably stopped the heat from going up too high but doesn't stop it from rising from whatever the low point in the night was.

From my testing I've found that 13 degrees is my ideal sleep temperature. I do have AC but it only goes down to 18 at the lowest. I've found that when it is 13 degrees in my room, something only achievable in winter when it just naturally gets cold in my room, I not only sleep great but can also sleep in (something that im not able to do normally as i just end up tossing and turning in bed without falling back asleep).

I think its rising heat thats the issue rather than straight heat because on days where I wake up early due to the heat, I can always nap fine during the day (when its even hotter than the morning). I think my blanket is made of wool.

I don't really know what to do. I've already tried to sleep earlier so I can be fine with waking up earlier but it only sometimes works. According to google the ideal room temperature should be 15.6 to 19c, which maybe means my room is behaving normally and its just me that for some reason needs things to be colder than usual. But then I don't know how to make that happen.

Specifically the questions im asking is:

  1. Is my room unusually warm or does it heat up unusually fast? and if so how do I stop it?
  2. How do I stop the heat/rising heat from waking me up?

Sleeping issues

I am 29M with a lot of sleeping issues . i can literally sleep for more than 12hours everyday without any issues and I'm starting to wonder if my sleeping pattern is normal or if there could be something medically wrong.

I can literally sleep for 12+ hours every day, and honestly, it feels like that's what my body naturally wants. If I sleep for less than around 8 hours, I feel noticeably worse and get quite irritated/fussy. I don't feel like I'm someone who can just sleep 6–7 hours and function normally.

My work schedule might also be affecting things. I help run my family's restaurant business, and I usually work from around 6 PM until 1–2 AM. By the time I get home, eat, relax, etc., I usually end up sleeping around 4–5 AM.

Then I wake up somewhere around 3–4 PM.

So basically, my routine is often:

Sleep: 4–5 AM

Wake up: 3–4 PM

Work: 6 PM–1/2 AM

Repeat

The strange thing is that sleeping 10–12 hours actually feels natural to me. I don't necessarily force myself to stay in bed—I genuinely feel like I need that amount of sleep.

I'm starting to wonder:

Is sleeping 10–12+ hours regularly actually a problem?

Could my late-night work schedule and body clock be causing this?

Could there be vitamin or nutritional deficiencies that make someone need significantly more sleep?

Has anyone here experienced something similar and found out the actual reason?

I'm not looking for someone to diagnose me online, but I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have experienced excessive sleep or sleepiness and what eventually helped them figure out the cause.

I feel like I'm literally spending a huge portion of my life sleeping, and I'm wondering whether this is just my natural sleep requirement or something I should seriously get checked.

Would really appreciate any experiences, advice, or suggestions about what I should get tested for.

Ditching podcasts at bedtime cut my sleep latency in half, here is the audio setup I swapped to

I used to be convinced that I needed an audiobook or a podcast playing on a sleep timer to fall asleep. If i tried falling asleep in pure silence, my mind would immediately start running through backlogged thoughts, to-do lists, random stress..

The issue with podcasts is that if the topic gets interesting and I end up staying awake for the next episode. I realized I was just delaying sleep by forcing my brain to listen to people talking

I ended up switching to endless generative soundscapes through Endel. Instead of playing static music tracks or recorded loops that start over every hour, it generates(for you individually) a seamless stream of low-frequency sound

The main advantage for me has been zero pattern recognition so I can connect sleep cycles. My brain cannot predict a loop restart or get invested in a narrative. It acts like a steady acoustic barrier that gives my brain just enough input to settle down. My sleep tracker shows I am consistently falling asleep in under 20 minutes now instead of rolling around for almost an hour

What do you listen to for sleep?

More Melatonin Does Not Mean More Sleep

Always assumed taking more melatonin meant sleeping harder, like a dial you turn up. Turns out that's wrong, it's not really a sedative, it's more like a signal telling your body it's nighttime, so timing matters way more than the amount. A lot of gummies also have more melatonin than the label says, which probably explains the groggy mornings I used to blame on being tired. Pretty sure "more = more sleep" is one of the most common misunderstandings about this stuff, once you get the timing right instead of just upping the dose it makes a lot more sense.

I can’t sleep

I really can’t sleep and don’t know why. I try going to bed earlier but I still get 5 hours. I created a routine of sleeping, low light, and reading my kindle but it still sucks. I think I might try taking an edible before bed I dunno.

I don’t know if it’s insomnia because it does run in my family or stress. The stress is due to being 25yo man with a minimum wage job and not knowing what I’m doing with my life.

I don’t really know how to fix it and I’m tired af dude

Any way i can help my gf?

Hey, my gf and i are in college and she's had trouble sleeping since we moved in this semester. She wakes up one or two times a night anytime from 2am-7am. Sometimes it's bc she's warm, sometimes a noise, but usual just wakes up. Because she's tired and frustrated she gets really angry and upset which only makes it harder to fall asleep. Since we're in a dorm we squeeze into a twin xl which isn't terrible but sometimes she just needs a little more space. We've tried sleeping apart multiple times and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I don't know if there's anything I can do to help her, and she says her parents deal with the same thing so i think there's some anxiety around this being a lasting issue. Any advice?

Trying to not be so sleepy as an exam student (I NEED TO LOCK IN)

Hi, I'm (17F) and for years I've been really sleepy during the day, napping nearly everyday, sometimes multiple times a day.

Most people who know me know this, (I have gotten narcolepsy allegations, though not trying to claim I have it)

and even teachers have noticed it (me being sleepy during class, but I mean maths is boring af).

My mom thought I had diabetes but after those results came back negative she wasn't really open to going to a sleep doctor or normal doctor really.

I was wondering if anyone with similar experience /or just knowledge knows maybe some drinks that can help, some pills, advice idk. Thanks

Sleep med

So I can no longer take Seroquel for sleep. Gave me horrible headaches, fast heartbeat and restless legs.

Doctor took me off of Seroquel and now has put me on Hydroxyzine hcl 25mg tablet probably twice a day because it's 60 count.

Has anyone had success with this drug for sleep?

The strangest part is that I'm tired all day... until I get into bed.

This has always confused me. I'll spend the whole day feeling exhausted, counting down the hours until I can finally rest. Then I get into bed... and suddenly my brain acts like it's the middle of the afternoon. It's almost funny. The place where I'm supposed to feel the sleepiest is often where I feel the most awake. Has anyone else experienced that?

I can’t wake up in the mornings

My work schedule is about to change, I’m going from starting work at 7am to 4:30am. I’ve been going to bed earlier but I can’t wait up earlier. Last night I fell asleep around 7:30, didn’t wake up to any of my alarms starting at 3:00am and slept all the way until 6:00. Does anyone have advice on waking up early? I’m an extreme hard sleeper
