Back with another vivid symbolic one from early this morning (9/1/2026) a month after the last vivid symbolic one. Apologies in advance for the long post, but this one needs more explaining than the last one.
Potentially relevant real-life context (italicized is background from my last post): I (26F) graduated college in May (gap years). My dynamic with my best friend started to blur lines between romantic and platonic in our last semester, even though I'd sworn I would never let it go there because he was so much younger (now 22); also, I've been seeing engagement announcements from my elementary school bullies and that's upset me more than I care to admit. (Addition: I saw my best friend from elementary school's birthday post for her boyfriend 2 days ago and that got to me for some reason.) Additional context for this one: My mom died of a brain tumor when I was 15. One of the symptoms of the tumor was her making sexually inappropriate comments, including to me, and that's caused me to fear open sexuality to this day. Her illness was one of the reasons why we had to move in with my grandma when I was 11 (grandma died of COVID 9 years later; COVID is also part of why I took gap years), which cut me off from the kids I went to elementary school with (the WASPy girls who are now getting married) and part of me still wishes I'd gotten the adolescence that they did. I always wanted to be the popular girl in school, but was often bullied and excluded by my peers, and I didn't go to my prom for that reason.
Anyway, the dream: I was attending a movie screening in the activity center that my mom's cancer support group was in (they actually did have movie screenings for clients and their families). I was with my mom, dad, brother, and grandma (dad and brother were their current selves while mom and grandma were frozen at the time of their deaths), on line to get into the screening. Then my best friend showed up. He just said "Hey" casually at first, but I held out my arms and he hugged me, and my mom said something to him like "good job" (implying I'd have been upset if he didn't hug me). We didn't let go at first, but held each other side-by-side (his arm around my lower back), talking up close and definitely looking like lovers (my family had gone ahead of us by then, but strangers were looking at us funny; also, we have been in that position in public IRL before).
We went inside and I sat next to my mom on an extra-long couch, and he sat beside me. My mom was half-whispering stuff to me about me and him and said something like "just promise me you'll wrap it up" (meaning use a condom when we had sex- we have not had sex and in fact are both adult virgins) and I was obviously mortified and was like "Mommy, stop, what the hell?" She said "you're telling me you're not gonna... after this?" and I, exasperated, said "oh my God, you're dead and your voice is still in my head". (That's particularly interesting, because usually in dreams where she shows up I don't remember or acknowledge that she's dead.)
My best friend had to leave for some reason but told me he'd be back. My grandma took his seat, and a bunch of people started streaming in until the couch was full and people were starting to sit on the floor, so I was worried that when my friend returned he'd have nowhere to sit. The other people were mostly randoms and mostly elders and children, but there may have been some familiar faces from our neighborhood. Then the movie started, which was some Barbie movie (not the actual Barbie movie) I think, but definitely was clearly a kids' movie and I remember wondering "we're all adults, why are we here?"
After it had been a while and my friend hadn't come back, I left to look for him. He'd been wearing a yellow shirt, so I was scanning around for it, but a lot of people had on yellow shirts. I went outside to a massive outdoor event venue. On one side, there seemed to be a high school homecoming/prom/graduation going on (there was a slideshow playing on a jumbotron with a picture of the prom king and queen that said "Congratulations!", and I saw a long line of teens, some in formalwear and some in caps and gowns). Elsewhere, in a mostly-hidden area, seemed to be a wedding reception/cocktail hour. One lady noticed I was lost and asked if I was going to the prom/graduation, and I said, "no, I'm going to the wedding" (even though I wasn't?) and told her "I'm 26" (presuming she'd mistaken me for one of the highschoolers). Still looking for my friend, I went back the way I came and happened upon a large white tent that seemed to be a vendor or volunteer tent (it was the same tent that my college puts up for events), where a bunch of people were unloading and setting things up, presumably for either the prom/graduation or the wedding reception.
Finally, I found my friend (well, he kind of found me- I think he'd had to help the vendors/volunteers for a little bit for some reason? I also think he was with one of our other friends at first, but then he saw me). He said something like, "there you are, my best friend... borderline girlfriend... whatever you are at this point" (in a sarcastic tone of voice- he does actually talk like that sometimes, but would obviously never say "borderline girlfriend" or call out the dynamic like that). I said "oh, we're saying the quiet part out loud now?" and he said "I said the quiet part out loud earlier!" (back at the movie screening- even though I can't remember what he'd said back there), and we both laughed half-nervously, releasing a little bit of the tension. He started walking and I followed him, but I didn't know where we were going or how to get back to the movie screening.
Then we were in an underground train station, for the subway line that runs through our university. (The station was labeled as the line's final stop IRL, but IRL that final stop is elevated, not underground. Potentially relevant is that I irrationally despise that train, and that we took that train our last, very disappointing [for me] night out before the semester ended.) I asked him, "Wait, where are we going? What are we doing?", but that's the last thing I remember before I woke up.
This definitely feels like a sequel to the dream I had last month (where I was preparing for my wedding in my old school's auditorium and then walked out to my dad's future funeral), but I'm wondering what's with the recurring symbols: weddings (and formal events in general), adolescent milestones, the blurring of lines between the living and the dead. It's definitely trying to tell me something, but what?
