Movies After a few weeks I’ve rewatched all the Spider-Man movies. Here’s how I’d rank them and all I’ve got to say about them.
So I’ve decided to rewatch all the Spider-Man movies. After about 3 weeks I’ve gone through them all. I am absolutely not counting the Sony villain films btw. Lots of these movies I have not rewatched in years. I recall watching Spider-Man 1 and that might’ve been before or after no way home. I got into Spider-Man 2 but didn’t get to rewatch it in its entirety and years passed. After rewatching them all here’s how I’d rank and describe them. It was interesting cause some of these I haven’t watched in over 10+ years.

I will say 2,1, and BND are pretty tight. Almost interchangeable even but not quite.
Spider-Man 1. So the original and all these years it still holds up. For the first round it perfected showing us Peter’s origin. Among the most easily rewatchable movies. Maybe the only legit weak point is that a lot of these CGI does not hold up but that’s an unfair criticism. Something that feels more like a plus after the other movies is Norman becomes Green Goblin quickly while some movies take way too long to make their villains super. I guess it is a little cheesy that New York citizens can put up a legit fight or slow down Norman on the bridge. Though it’s more about showing Peter’s connection to the people. Also I guess all of MJ and Peter’s interactions are kind of like recycles of each other in a sense.
Spider-Man 2. Next up and still going strong. Doc Ock is a great villain and character overall. I still prefer Green Goblin by a bit. Heavy scenes like Peter opening up to May about how Uncle Ben died because of him. It is interesting seeing Harry try and become more of a notable figure within his company and fill in the shoes of his dad. It is touching that Peter is unmasked but the whole train is so thankful that they’ll protect his secret. Also I think they did a better version of the bridge scene in 1. The citizens are willing to stand up for Peter but this time they’re not effective against the super tech of Otto’s arms. Also this might sound like a stupid suggestion but I think it would’ve been significantly more interesting if they made MJ a movie actress instead of a broadway actress. Though I guess it’s not like they could have an equivalent for Peter missing her live performance. I will say of all the villains that have already been done Doc Ock is the one I’d most like to see get another variant within the MCU. More often than not there’s at least legit story reason for the villain to learn Peter’s identity. I will say Doc Ock kind of feels the most rewarding since we see him reevaluate his thoughts on both Peter and Spider-Man in real time.
Spider-Man 3. As a kid I’d watch this movie so much. Easily more than the first two. This was all because of Venom. Looking back now all these years it’s still a good movie. Eddie Brock Venom isn’t as perfect as he seemed when I was a kid. Though his scenes in the Bugle and Peter exposing him are still entertaining. Sandman is also a decent character even at the gamble of retconning Uncle Ben’s death. I never really felt like Harry is a full on threat or villain. He’s messing with Peter but at the very least never kills MJ or even terrorizes civilians. The whole sequence from his memories coming back to Peter fighting him felt like a massive detour. As for Venom I don’t mind that he doesn’t have a hulking physique but I wish he didn’t just have Eddies normal voice and had his “mask” on more often. Of course I will always find the black suit in this movie cool. It’s also funny how this movie casually just has Gwen Stacy when that would be like a massive deal to have now. Like even in TASM movies they had deleted scenes with MJ which had to be forever hidden I guess.
The Amazing Spider-Man. As a kid I’d sometimes go back and forth from loving this movie for being “new” or hating it because everyone else did (around 2014 especially). Now I’d find it decent and have come to appreciate how Andrew Garfield does his Spider-Man. The suit isn’t all that but I kind of see it as a transformation where Peter initially is just hunting the man who killed Uncle Ben so in the next movie he has a more heroic suit. This is a movie where I feel Connors takes too long to become the Lizard. I definitely think Peter and Gwen are a great couple in these films. Also pretty ballsy that Peter opens up about being Spider-Man right away to Gwen. It was also this movie where I realized that literally every single Spider-Man movie has at least one of the major villains find out Peter is Spider-Man. I’d say out of every movie this is the one where it’s the most unnecessary. Lizard didn’t need to find Peter’s camera and Peter didn’t need to be unmasked in the finale. We could’ve kept that a secret between the two. Of course I’m just talking about villains. I don’t mind Gwen or even Captain Stacy finding out. I’m mainly talking about villains.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2. I never watched this in theaters but I sure did watch it repeatedly once it came out on dvd. So it kind of baffles me that some people can see this as their number one Spider-Man movie. It’s very nice looking. The montage where we see Peter as Spider-Man is probably the best of the movie. Then we have the plot about Peter’s dad hijack the middle bulk of the movie. I am not entertained to see Peter go in a subway learning about Parker Spiders. Then on the other hand you got Oscorp suits trying to turn on Harry which is equally uninteresting. To top it off there’s Green Goblin Harry. He might be the worst live action Spider-Man villain. He’s absolutely the worst looking. That armor is so bulky and unappealing to look at. Then he’s got stupid hair and veiny skin. Some of the Brand New Day villains in the intro are more sillier villains and they all look more serious than this Gobby. It’s an embarrassment that he’s the one to kill Gwen. I know that it’s always been GG but maybe if he was a “good” Green Goblin. Then the final fight against a bumbling Rhino which was already in full display in the trailers. People complain Spider-Man 3 had an imbalance of villains but at least those villains were decent or interesting to varying degrees. Electro is the best one and he’s not really a great villain in this movie at all. There’s not even an active villain for a lot of it since he gets captured, and that’s when Peter gets the sudden urge to look into his parents. Instead of being an accident maybe have Max intentionally experiment himself for electricity powers. Except he doesn’t consider that it’s a dangerous power so he tries and fails to be a hero. He’s much more reckless and inconsiderate and Peter puts him down despite meaning well. Then have Peter think about the impact he has on people and question if it’s better or worse when people like Max happen. Even have a JJJ point attention to this. This Harry Green Goblin is the Temu Green Goblin that’s been returned 15 times. Then Rhino is just some bumbling idiot that the VERY incompetent Harry chose for the Rhino suit.
Apparently some storylines for 3 that were proposed were some of the dead characters being revived by Peter’s spider blood and science. So Andrew’s Spider-Man was kind of doomed regardless. Also at some point zombie Norman Osborn allegedly. Peter’s dad storyline was there from the very first scene so unfortunately that was always going to curse these movies.
Also fun fact: when I was a kid seeing TASM for the first time I didn’t fully grasp the concept of a reboot. So for years I sincerely believed that this Peter was the son of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man and that the Richard Parker in the opening was actually OG Peter all aged up. Peter’s mom is even named Mary so that contributed too.
Spider-Man Homecoming. Brand New Day has been out for a bit now. I sincerely think all the MCU Spider-Man movies complement each other as a journey. That might sound like a double edged sword. At the time I didn’t mind all the tech even with Tony backing it up. I know lots of people hate it with a passion. Though now it feels like a true journey seeing Peter be fresh as a hero here and then fast forward to BND where he’s much more confident and even commanding cops. It makes it feel rewarding to see the contrast from all of New York mourning his injury to his humble beginnings. Another big example is how we go from Peter mildly annoyed by Neds questions to him actually wanting to answer anything Ned wants to know in BND. I think Vulture is a great villain and honestly it definitely had much to do with watching this one immediately after TASM 2. This is kind of unrelated but I think it would’ve made for an interesting episode of What If..? if we saw Toomes succeed in the heist instead of Darcy fucking Howard the Duck and having a beastiality baby. Also even with people being mixed on the Stark connection I think it’s nice how Happy grows to genuinely respect Peter. It is also kind of a joke that so many Spider-Man fans will instantly assume any black kid is Miles Morales but canonically he is already out there somewhere.
Spider-Man Far From Home. I know some people hate this movie more and that this is the one where the Iron Man Jr stuff might outshine even Homecoming. I still like this movie. Watching Homecoming and this back to back I’d say Homecoming is probably the better one overall. It’s mostly slower in the first half. Though that’s by design as more of a vacation movie. There are plenty of things to highlight. This movie finally gives us MCU Peter getting into a real relationship with MJ. Liz was more like a fling even if Peter stuck for the dance. Sophomore and Senior relationships and all. Also this is the foundation for what led to NWH and BND with the end. The skrull twist is a little lame but I guess there had to be a nerf for Nick Fury. It is crazy how Nick Fury has faded away after Winter Solider. There’s just been the Captain Marvel movies, Secret Wars, and this fake fury. I will give it props for having the most use of the spider-sense within a final battle. Also before BND and NWH final suit I thought the red/black suit was the best MCU Spider-Man suit. Mysterio team should still be out there. Maybe they could supply tech and weapons for future villains, maybe Mr Negative or Tombstone. Also a bit funny to remember how this was the last MCU thing before covid.
Spider-Man No Way Home. So easily the best of the Home trilogy. I guess my main actual criticism is the integrated suit. I kind of wish Tom had a better suit when finally fighting along Tobey and Andrew. Also the end credits is just a teaser for Multiverse of Madness. In retrospect I would’ve preferred no end credits scene at all. Initially it’s really interesting seeing how Peters identity spilling unfolds. Seeing his school teachers and classmates finally know. This movie finally sheds Peters reliance on Stark. Even early some of the capabilities of the iron spider suit are restricted. It’s fun seeing most the villains of past movies interact. There’s some things that feel forced. Like Sandman just being another villain to fight for his daughter but it’s not movie ruining. There’s also lots that’s a result of Covid. Plenty of stock footage used to cut corners but given the circumstances there wasn’t much else to be done. Electro is honestly a different person than his actual movie but it’s an upgrade regardless. I will say we may not have gotten Tobey interact with Green Goblin at all, even after being stabbed, but I guess Otto was a better pick. That and the fact that we actually see Norman and Otto interact at last. Then Aunt May dies and becomes MCU Peter’s Uncle Ben figure. At this point I’m guessing Uncle Ben probably didn’t even get murdered in this universe, but it would be interesting if we could actually learn about him. Like the most we get about him is Peter implies May is still mourning him by the events of Homecoming. It’s already a good movie even before the other Peter’s come aboard. Then the three Peter’s finally come onscreen and it’s a real fun ride with them. I like the little distinctions between all of them. Tobey Peter is more experienced. He disarms Andrew quicker and even has his normal clothes showing that he’s gotten better at balancing his life. Him and MU are still a couple it seems. Then I appreciate that Andrew has added lore like him being more bitter after Gwen’s death. I think it’s a bit of nice compensation on the fact that he had less movie time. I think this movie definitely highlights their uniqueness even as the same person. I’m not sure if it’s even a secret that Tobey will be in Doomsday. Like even Disney plus straight up advertises NWH as reading material for Doomsday. I’m not a big fan of what they’re gonna do to him there. So in the meantime I guess I’ll live in the moment of THAT not being the case. I’m also thankful they did not make the mistake of making Brand New Day continue the multiverse stuff cause that would’ve really hurt this film in retrospect. They really did a good job of making the past Spider-Man characters feel like authentic. There’s some inconsistencies like Doc Ock shouldn’t really know Green Goblin is Norman. We got the x-men in Doomsday and I can’t really see them as THE X-men from the first two movies. Though lots of that has to do with how the X-Men movies just failed at continuity at several points across their movies. Then comes the ending where Peter is at his lowest but regardless he powers through and will continue being Spider-Man with Aunt Mays memory being a source of willpower.
Spider-Man Brand New Day. Now this is in fact the Spider-Man movie I haven’t rewatched the longest. Firstly I think they perfected the suit. Especially with how we’re finally practical and not CGI now. I love that you can see Peter’s eyes in some shots and his mouth moves. The final swing suit of NWH was already really good but this one steps it up even more. Legit the only part that isn’t perfect is maybe the web shooters but even then Peter takes them off and won’t really need them in the future. The organic webbing is a really cool level up for this story. On one hand Spider-Man may not have be present for anything else in the MCU but that’s cause Sony isn’t gonna fork him over for anything less than a huge Avengers movie. The montage was perfect at making me feel Peter’s influence and effect on the city. Already I can go on and on for so many moments. The exchange between him and Dewolff where he talks about just being a volunteer. I thought that was a great showcase of both Peter’s humility and playfulness. Jean is the main villain and I guess lots that she does could’ve been done by Mr Negative. Though I guess it pays off with Peter kind of mentoring a younger super. It is interesting to see Jean be a mutant so early on that within the main MCU that it’s not even a coined term. I thought the reveal that V-Maxx was just the last thing Jeans sister saw before she died was very tragic. It’s great seeing Peter’s dynamic with Punisher and even Peter’s good nature rub off Frank a bit. The hospital scene is one of the best instances of seeing NY appreciate Spider-Man, especially in contrast to NWH being the point where Spider-Man was hated the most.
Spider-Man Into the Spider-verse. There’s so much I can go over in this movie. This movie definitely elevated Miles Morales as a character for more people. I really like Miles relationship with his family. Rio doesn’t get as much here as ATSV but she still has her moment with Miles. Then Jeff is a dad who sometimes struggles to connect with Miles but still gives him the strength to push through. Kingpin is a good villain. He has sympathy with his dead family but is still a full on bad guy killing Peter and then Uncle Aaron. I already knew Uncle Aaron was the prowler but I like the weight of everything once he takes off the mask and Miles reaction. Liv being Doc Ock was a huge surprise I didn’t see coming at all. It’s still up in the air but I like the shock of how she just abruptly dies. If Liv doesn’t return in Beyond I’d just assume she died by that truck. She’s a pretty good secondary villain. She’s actually more dangerous than Kingpin. Though Kingpin does more emotional damage and is still funding her to begin with. This movie has a sort of unofficial Sinister Six. Goblin dies early so they’re not really the full on team. There’s plenty of details to dig into. Aunt May calls Doc Ock Liv. So just off that you can assume that might be why this Peter had a full on cave as his aunt May was more tech savvy. They also made a good choice of having Miles fight Kingpin on his own after sending everyone back home. Otherwise it would’ve either been a cakewalk or felt silly that Kingpin is an issue for all the Spiderpeople at once. Also it’s extremely personal for everyone there. Miles confronts his uncles killer and even his dad is there in support. Lots of instances of 42 which has much more meaning in Across. One thing I’m very interested in seeing for Beyond is Aaron and Jeff’s early years, and I’m assuming how they met Rio based on early photos. I also appreciate that within this movie Gwen just goes by Spider-Woman. Always thought it was better to just call her that rather than Ghost Spider in universe. Of course I appreciate that this Peter and Peter B are married to their MJ. Though I feel like dead Peter’s MJ could’ve had something more, kind of like how May moved in Across. I assume Tobey Peter and MJ are still together but can’t really say whether or not they’re married.
Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse. The middle chapter of the trilogy. Gwen is way more prominent now and we open up with her full story in better detail. Meanwhile Miles has risen in the role of Spider-Man. Despite what Miguel claims you definitely feel proud of Miles for saving Inspector Singh and sparing Pavitr from loads of suffering. Ironically Jess feels more like an anomaly cause Jessica Drew is Spider woman but also traditionally not a spider person like Peter, Miles, Gwen. Technically even that character apparently just existed so Marvel could own the name SpiderWoman. Her motorcycle feels off. I imagine it’s because she’s pregnant but that detail doesn’t add much. I guess we’re gonna see her baby be born in the end of BTSV. Miles promised his mom a cake so I’m prepared to see him deliver. I might have this one over Into slightly. Mainly cause I really like the universe hopping and Miles is really stepping up as his own Spider-Man. This movie really expands the family dynamic for Miles. Rewatching this now it really feels like Spot is gonna end up freeing all the spider society villains. So we’re probably gonna see a massive Spider-Man battle against all his villains. Then there’s Hobie who’s an instant ally to Miles. I like all the small details of how he’s trying to help Miles and even just trying to talk him out of Spider society before it’s too late. The canon event is such a great concept. It’d even be neat to see it be used in more media but not sure how that could work logistically. This isn’t a legit criticism but it’s kind of funny how Spectacular Spider-Man is basically canon height Wolverine among the rest of Spider-society.
Beyond the Spider verse will seemingly come out next year at last. It’s impossible to imagine that it was intended to just be one year later. So many things to conclude. Canon events and potential loopholes like George Stacy simply resigning. Prowler Miles and his universe. I imagine the sinister six cartel will be a major threat secondary to Spot in that film. Personally the roster I’d like to see is Venom, Black Cat, Rhino, Kraven, Mysterio, Electro. I’m interested in seeing the spiderverse interpretations of those characters. Apparently there will be other Gwen’s in the movie. I’m really interested in seeing that. Gwen herself is already fully aware that Gwen dying is a common tragedy. Then how Miguel is dealt with. Of course I also look forward to the more than likely reaction Miles parents have to him being Spider-Man.
I won’t be among the first 100,000 people to suggest this but I really think Spider-Man 5 should have Black Cat. If they don’t do it then, it’ll just be harder and less reasonable to do it later. Like it’d be so annoying if Peter and MJ got together, and abruptly broke up so Black Cat can happen. Even Raimi Spider-Man 4 almost went a route of Peter having an affair with Black Cat. Also maybe combo with Venom and the Black Suit. As for a main villain I’d like to see them redo Doc Ock at least. Also The Lizard but make his design have a snout this time. Though I’m afraid the MCU might not be able to reuse movie Spider-Man villains so casually. Mister Negative could also be a big one. I doubt they’d do Green Goblin again when he was so prominent in NWH. I would guess they’re more likely to do Hob Goblin, might even have it be Ned.
Besides Spider-Man 5 and BTSV when it comes to Spider-Man stuff I’d really like to see Spider-Man 2099. Not specifically SV Miguel but a general Spider-Man 2099 story.
So that’s pretty much it. Just to be clear I like all the films fair enough. TASM 2 is the only one I view as full on bad.
