Rugby In Squamish

For anyone looking to meet people or get involved in something here in the Sea to Sky, I genuinely can’t recommend the Axemen Rugby Club enough.

Joining the club is one of the best things I’ve done since moving here. It’s given me a real community, some of my closest friends and a place that feels like home. The club has been around for more than 10 years now and has grown into a big, welcoming group but new people are always encouraged to come down, whether you’ve played rugby before or not.

Senior men’s and women’s training is at Howe Sound Secondary at 6:30 pm. There’s also drop-in touch rugby every Tuesday at 6 pm at Howe Sound Secondary, which is open to everyone and is probably the easiest way to come down and give it a try.

If you’re interested, reach out to the Axemen Rugby Club through their socials or website or just come down and introduce yourself. You’ll be made to feel welcome.

Depot Road Upgrades

Have you driven down Depot Rd. lately and seen the new “protected” active-use lane the District of Squamish approved?

I completely understand the importance creating safer spaces for people walking and biking, but I honestly don’t understand how this particular design was approved—or how it was considered a good use of public money.

They’ve removed almost all of the parking along Depot (not surprising with our current decision makers), to create a bike lane on one side of the road that appears to be wider than the adjacent vehicle lane, separated by a small concrete curb and a seemingly endless line of unattractive reflector posts, and added another bike lane on the other side, while expanding the width of both sides.

The result, in my opinion, is a pretty significant eyesore that also makes the road feel more cluttered than it needs to be, and removes neighbourhood parking.

The lane is wide enough that all bikes / walkers could be on one side of the road and parking could be on the other. Given the amount of infrastructure being installed, I can’t help but wonder whether there was a better, more functional and aesthetically pleasing way to achieve the same goal.

If the end goal is creating an active transportation path with a properly curbed transportation lane and grass boulevard like on the corner of Depot and Government, why spend money on a pathetic version? Why shift away from the design that was used on Government between Depot and the art gallery? There are now 3 completely different designs for active transportation, 4 if you include Ross within a small area of Brackendale.

I’m all for improving active transportation in Squamish—but is this really the best design we could come up with? Curious what others think.

Chill place to post up with a laptop?

On the weekends especially. After the library closes at 5, is there anywhere quiet enough to hang out with a laptop?

Discussion: With the Nepal slide, what are residents thoughts on the Garibaldi Lake barrier.

I recognize that the glacier collapse in Nepal and the Garibaldi lake rock barrier are not exactly relatable but the barrier has been a concern for many years now and the area below the barrier has been deemed unsafe for habitation since 1981. Very little has happened at the barrier but there are “recent”signs of stress. The potential is always there and Squamish would be the most affected community. I’m curious to know if this is something people have thought about or are even aware of? Just want to see if there any professional opinions on the matter and what other people think about it. I’ve hiked past the barrier many times and I am always amazed by the sheer size of it and the fact that Garibaldi Lake wouldn’t be in existence without it.

Could the same devastating flooding that happened in Nepal, happen here in the Squamish flood plain?

Custom closet options

I need to upgrade my walk-through closet storage from the 10 year old, builder grade wire shelf. It seems like my closet is a non-standard size so IKEA options aren't going to work for me, which means I think I'm looking at the custom route.

Would love to shop local if possible. Does anyone have experience with a Squamish / S2S based company that covered design, build and installation? Or alternatively, any company (California Closets etc.) that did a particularly good or bad job? I am pretty handy so could do the installation myself, but I also have a toddler so am willing to pay to save my sanity and have it take less than 6 months.

Kfc

Anyone know when KFC is open? I’m absolutely sick and tired of having to pay for parking in Whistler or driving through shitty traffic to get to the one on Lonsdale, only to find out their parking lot is full.

  2. If you're already registered, request a ballot! You need to request a ballot every calendar year that you want to vote.

  3. Fill Out and Return Your Ballot: Once you receive your ballot, follow the instructions carefully to complete it and return it by the specified deadline.

We're here to help! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at GOTV @ votefromabroad .org (just remove the spaces). Additionally, our FAQ for voting can answer questions on how to make the process go smoothly.

Importantly: Spread the word!

Do you have any friends, contacts or family overseas that you could reach? All eligible US citizens can vote regardless of where they're living. Missed connection on Panorama Ridge.

Aug 25th. We made a bunch of eye contact in the parking lot in the am. And then chatted about how bad the smoke was and if it was better to wait it out or go for it when we were coming back down and ran into you at the patch of trees. You are a woman with your two friends and had cool black sunglasses (Ray Ban Zena bio-based or similar) with a black outfit. I would guess you're in your 30s. You're beautiful and seemed very nice. I'm a 6' man with tattoos and poles and was out with one buddy.

E-motorcycles on Alice lake trails

Lately I've seen a few different emotorcycles on the Alice lake trails, descending Rupert for instance. And on mashiter and the various access trails.

I tried to take a photo but wasn't quick enough. Is there anywhere to report this that might result in enforcement? I can't imagine the police would care necessarily...

How busy is pickleball at Brennan park throughout the week?

Hi folks! I'll be in town for ten days starting this Friday. I wanted to see what the local court situation was like and I've heard there are a bunch of somewhat new courts over at Brennan. Would I be able to find a consistent amount of people after work, or is it always busy? Thanks!

Guided water experience for family of 6 that won't break the bank?

We're a family of 6 visiting the area. Having a blast so far! I'm looking for a guided water experience that won't break the bank. In Canmore, we did a one hour Bow River guided raft experience for $75/person. Anything similar in the area? Everyone in the family is 13+. Nothing fancy. We just like being in the water and preferably in the same raft/boat to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Many thanks!

Rainy day ideas for toddlers

Hey all! We are visiting from Portland and staying in brackendale. We brought our bikes and will be biking to the river and playgrounds every chance we get this week. Here’s what we are up to with the clear skies the next few days: fisherman’s park, new playground near the windsurf area, sea to sky gondola Wednesday for family night, Alice lake Wednesday to get on the water.

Wondering what short hikes or other outdoor favorites you recommend with a toddler that can be done on a rainy day?

Also I’m seeing posts of grizzlies in the area. Do folks normally carry bear space on close-in hikes?

Thanks so much!

Police Incident on Garibaldi Way

Does anyone know why the police had their long guns out earlier this afternoon on Garibaldi Way by the 711 and then over by Tandoori flame?

I can’t find anything on Facebook etc.

Grizzly with 3 cubs in the Ray Peter's trail network yesterday

Just reading of a couple of encounters from yesterday. Naturally there is some squabbling over grizzly vs cinnamon black bear but qualified eyes are indicating it's a grizzly. Hopefully there is community wide communication from appropriate authorities today but just wanted to share this as most people will not be expecting that and there are tonnes of riders/off leash dog walkers and kids in there being still school holidays. Give the area a wide birth for now.

Recommendations for good, long, day hikes?

I have found myself unemployed and in need of taking some long walks. I've lived in Squamish for more than 4 years now, and I've never done a good hike other than The Chief and The Climb / Evac. I don't trust AllTrails to tell me where to go!

I'm in good shape, have the gear I need, etc. Where should I go that will take me most of the day? Panoramic sounds good, but I'm worried 29k might get me stuck in the dark.
