Well yea, can’t get into venture capitalism is your intent isn’t to fuck other people over.

I once hung out with my good friend and his VC coworkers. We tailgated a football game and I spent 2 hours watching the most self-righteous pig-headed dbags abuse every substance on earth. I ended up just walking away with no warning.

It was a VC firm.

Gave ‘em the old Irish goodbye.

Yeah, she's actually not a good person. Evil, even.

I think the comic pointed that out beautifully.

How exactly does a company scale from a single brick and mortar storefront without capital investment?

10

u/Blackstone01 3h ago

Modern venture capitalists are not the same as traditional investors. Both want to make profit off their investments, but where traditional investors are ones who are typically aiming at long term investments where they'd get consistent dividends, venture capitalist investors are looking to aggressively buy into an industry to grab control of it and maximize their short term gains, often at the expense of the public and traditional investors.

A traditional (knowledgeable) investor looks at AI as a potential for profits decades out, but get concerned about how the valuation does not match the profitability.

A venture capitalist looks at AI as a potential ponzi scheme where they make bank on their initial investment by selling shares of a sinking ship to stooges that don't see what's under the hood.

They literally just provide operating capital. Your premise assumes they plan for the companies they provide millions of dollars to to fail when they would gain immense more profit from a company growing until it sells for a high return.

6

u/Ok-Oil-2130 3h ago

they plan for both

u/Recursive_Death 3h ago

Very rarely do VCs hold stakes in the companies after they go public, even if successful. Their entire business is just hyping things up just till they start attracting institutional funding, then ride to the exit before it falls.

Yes, that would be the point in which they sell

When you simplify it like that it doesn't sound bad at all, but that's obviously not the reality. Venture capitalists are some of the worst groups of people actively destroying our society and planet. Come on, man.

1

u/lemonylol 3h ago

Are you going to actually explain anything?

2

u/EquivalentBeach8780 3h ago

I really don't have to since I'm not debating you, but sure.

Venture capital can negatively impact the economy and society by prioritizing hyper-maximalist growth and short-term market dominance over sustainable value.

And the means they use to maximize growth are, in many cases, immoral as fuck. Look up anything about Blackrock or Palantir. Happy searching.

When you simplify it like that it doesn't sound bad at all, but that's obviously not the reality.

That was a debate. You literally are saying I have the wrong interpretation of reality.

Venture capital can negatively impact the economy and society by prioritizing hyper-maximalist growth and short-term market dominance over sustainable value.

Extremely broad statement that can be applied speciously to absolutely anything.

And the means they use to maximize growth are, in many cases, immoral as fuck. Look up anything about Blackrock or Palantir. Happy searching.

So a reddit education, got it

Lol "it's totally a debate because I say so 🤓"

I guess if you don't have any morals then the things those companies have done don't seem so bad. Think on that, bud. Later 👋

Person A makes x statement

Person B says "no, that's wrong"

Person A asks why

Person B says "lol this isn't a debate, I don't need to answer"

People come in and purchase goods and services, and in return that business saves money until they have enough to buy a second store to open?

1

u/lemonylol 3h ago

Is that really your only understanding of business? You can't imagine any goods or service that goes beyond a single block in customer base?

1

u/AVerySadHitler 3h ago

Not many thay deserve to be, no. Fuck VC and fuck most businesses that have 'scaled'. They end up expensive, inauthentic, and shit.

2

u/lemonylol 3h ago

I don't think gut feelings are very convincing here.

2

u/AVerySadHitler 2h ago

I should get my advice from homies with business degrees, they haven't fucked it all up, right?

1

u/lemonylol 2h ago

How does that qualify your claims?

Old company got bought out by a VC and they were like "Nothing is going to change guys! We bought it because we love it for what it is! Insert corporate jargon and empty platitudes."

50% of the business wasn't actually related to anything they cared about. 70/100 employees were laid off in under 18 months (including ~20 from their own industry side).

4

u/utzutzutzpro 2h ago

Companies do not get bought out by a VC company. That would be PE. PE would just buy companies. VC only invests.

1

u/RandomUser15790 1h ago

You right I always get the two mixed up.

If they were doing a job they were proud of, they wouldn't lead by saying they work "in finance."

1

u/vanillaninja16 3h ago

You don’t have to defend venture capitalist. They are doing a great job of exploiting and wringing every penny out of businesses before they move along already.

1

u/orange-yellow-pink 2h ago

You’re thinking of private equity not VCs

1

u/vanillaninja16 1h ago

Yea they are different, my bad. Two sides of the same coin though.

1

u/orange-yellow-pink 1h ago

They actually function completely differently

1

u/ImWhatsInTheRedBox 4h ago

Hence the "for now".

1

u/Questionably_Chungly 3h ago

I haven’t met anyone in venture capital who wasn’t a total rat of a human being.

1

u/chrisrobweeks 1h ago

"I do finance" says it all

0

u/Usernamesaregayyy 5h ago

She doesn’t realize she’s effed too?!

16

u/motorboatmycheeks 4h ago

The regular people are the exit liquidity. Vc makes it out and thats the bubble pop. Shes doing fine and has a nice bonus to boot

6

u/Asclepius-Rod 3h ago

Not only that, if she has enough cash when the bubble bursts then she can buy even more stocks at a deep deep discount while the rest of us suffer

0

u/Usernamesaregayyy 3h ago

You think she is an shareholder of a Bay Area VC? 🤣

0

u/Usernamesaregayyy 3h ago

Bro is understanding the stock market new to you?

0

u/Usernamesaregayyy 3h ago

I’m 100% right, you guys remember wall street crashes where all the guys start jumping off their buildings?

2

u/lemonylol 3h ago

Oh wow, your entire understanding of history is through pop culture references.

5

u/Ao_Kiseki 4h ago

Because there's a huge difference between you or I losing 90% of our networth and her. She'll have nore money after the bubble pops than my entire extended family has right now.

5

u/lemonylol 3h ago

You do realize if whatever bubble you're imagining pops, that's literally just a flash sale for VCs to buy up companies on the cheap?

-1

u/Usernamesaregayyy 3h ago

You think she is anything more than eye candy and lunch order taker?

0

u/lemonylol 3h ago

Explain how

2

u/sharklaserguru 2h ago

Because she almost certainly works for a VC firm and doesn't own the firm. So she's a peon like the rest of us, perhaps a well compensated one, but unless she's found a way to escape the bubble's collapse she'll be as fucked as we are!

1

u/lemonylol 2h ago

I don't understand, you think once a bubble pops everyone loses their jobs and can never work again?

1

u/lemonylol 3h ago

Sure. Explain how.

1

u/Kingkai9335 1h ago

The video did that
