Solving the Wraith problem

I was re-watching the first Atlantis episode where they encounter the Wraith. It made me realize that if some of these non advanced worlds would've just angled their gate towards the ground, the Wraith would've crashed and exploded. Then when the hive ships come, just hide in the mountains. I find it hard to believe that no one in the thousands of years of cullings didn't bother to move the gate.

Then when the hive ships come, just hide in the mountains.

the word "just" is doing some very heavy lifting here

Along with “just” angling the gate.

And you think the wraith wouldn’t find them in the mountains? Their ships have sensors

Also, the Wraith could then just move the gate into orbit

"Just don't get culled bro"

Or build a wall just past the sploosh, etc. id imagine its been tried but was severely punished when it happened. The Genii had the right idea. Look primitive and hide the real development

Assuming you finished the series. Some of the planets have such a large time between cullings that they thought it was not real. They can show up by ship, once recognized, fix the gate and then leave wraith there. It's like signal that humans are still there if the gate is moved.

Yep it's like 300-1000 years between major cullings. Many societies are ground down to hunter gatherers and relying on oral history. Even the Athosians seemed to be relatively primitive. Teyla had that little lighter but everything else we see of them is decidedly primitive. And they started as Ancient led humans originally so likely were extremely technologically advanced if they were living in the old city with the Lanteans.

The wraith had FTL travel capabilities + space gates. That combination is deadly.

Yeah, the Wraith totally couldn’t have come in hive ships, moved the gate back, secured it so that couldn’t be tried again, and then destroyed the entire planet…..

Oh wait…

Maybe bc the wraith have the equvivalent of nuclear bombs, You cant escape them by hiding if they want you dead.

Also it could absolutly happenend they would just come .retrieve the gate put it into a Orbit around the Planet, you lost your connection with friends arround galaxy cant flee anywhere and nothing really changed

Big brain thinking right there.

I would assume the Wraith had similar technology to the life signs detectors the team used on their hive ships.

Its kinda explained why its not done in the show. The inhabitants of pegasus use the gates for travel and commerce so they might not toy with stuff they dont really understand if its their lifeline. And for thoses civilisations that got far enough that they could it becomes a game of not attracting too much wraith attention as to not trigger a genocide.

Could be survivorship bias too where if they tried to send a malp and it didn’t rematerialize, then they just wouldn’t go to that planet via stagnate

It just doesn't seem to be a practical solution. The residents of the Pegasus galaxy use the gates regularly for trade. By disabling the gate, you cut off your own supply line. Also, how would you know that a hive ship is coming before it arrives? Very few of the civilizations we saw had the technology for an early warning signal, so evacuating people would be extremely difficult. It's only some people from Athos that have the ability to sense the Wraith. If you start evacuating when the Wraith arrive, you have the risk of leading them to your safehouse.

The Stargate’s are what remains of the Ancestors (how many Pegasus humans refer to the Ancients in a deified way) so move my gates is probably the last thing they want to do.

The Genii did hide in bunkers; but.. you are right.. since most Pegasus gate users didn't use ships to fly through the gate; setting it up in a room that couldn't fit a dart or with a big wall a meter in front of it would have done wonders to prevent dart raiding. But how do you hollow out a mountain to live in with a wraith hive ship in orbit?

Imo your best bet is to move into a world that has been fully culled and then bury the gate and hope they don't come by and reseed the planet later and forget about it for a few centuries. I am actually surprised we didn't see more nomadic folk like the travelers but people who used the gate to follow after the destruction of the wraith to pick up the tech and riches spoils.

To be honest, at whole francine, all gates are dumped to local forest/quarry field with zero defence.

That already bugged me in SG-1. Earth transferred their gate into a secret, high security bunker with tons of (partially stupid) security measures but every other world just lets it standing in some unprotected, remote area - even on Jaffa worlds.

The ones with security measures would destroy the malps. So no one would go through.

Even then, it's weird how SGC basically has a bunch of dudes stand in the open instead of having pre-prepared mono-directional cover in the gate room and corridors leading to it, so that the airmen have good fighting positions in their own home base.

I LOVE SG-1, but their “security” arrangement annoyed me so much.

Like, 2x .50cal machine guns in a turret pre-sighted would absolutely annihilate anything coming through, with no loss of life to the soldiers.

Honestly once they had a semi reliable ship they should have just made a moon base on the dark side of the moon or a space station orbiting Jupiter and moved the gate there, have the gate room with a door that opens directly to vacuum for hostile invaders to be vented out

No chance of contagions spreading, invisible invaders getting far or nosey reporters getting too close

Reminds me old star trek series security, every enemy from the bacteria to klingons could make security breach to the entrerprice every second episode and guys still act that is completely normal 😄

Because it is the travel of the gods for the Goa’uld. Not only is it a display of power. It is also not a secret and can be detected by the other Goa’uld from space

Jaffa worlds and Home worlds should have them in the middle of cities, but that is the only real change

There was definitely a few other worlds that secured their Gate, but not many.

Except the Aschen, who had at least buried some gates connected to machines that could raise and lower and tilt them.

I know most of the worlds they visited were less advanced, but some were very far advanced. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tilt gate upwards. People "fall back" inside.

Tilt gate downwards, to the spike pit.

Tolt it sideways, people will land on their asses.

After whoosch, raise a spiked wall real close. Or blow hot steam at the gate. Submerge in Baby Oil.

Gate defense is too easy.

Si je ne me trompe pas les Wraiths sentent la présence humaine donc cache toi et ils viendraient quand même, de plus les portes dans la galaxie de pégase sont souvent dans l’espace pour justement permettre au Dart de passer sans restriction

My headcanon is that populations in Pegasus actively used the gate system and stayed close to the gates because their moving away from or burying the gate is irrelevant to their getting culled. Or potentially makes the problem worse where instead they might get a few Darts grabbing people they get a whole fleet of hive ships flying in to check what’s happened to the gate. We also literally see different strategies pursued by different human populations. The Genii went underground, I think there was one or two others that did similarly, others hide knowledge with the understanding that culling would hinder or revert their technological process, others that got far enough along went off into space.
The Genii largely got lucky imo, I think they were deep enough possibly from naturally occurring cave systems to avoid Wraith sensors, and their not moving the entire population and having a show early modern agricultural population up top may have led to the Wraith not bothering with a more intensive search as they had no reason to suspect there was more than met the eye.
This meant the Genii effectively sacrificed the people on the surface whenever a culling occurred. If an entire population went into hiding where the Wraith knew there were people then that’d likely trigger a more extensive search and scanning to figure out what happened.
