Translation Translation check - short phrase

‱ Upvotes

I'm currently putting together a teaching resource for primary school pupils about different scripts/orthographies around the world. The task has 18 translations of 'languages are amazing/incredible' in various languages which have differing scripts. I've checked the translations with multiple online translation tools, but I'm well aware that these do not always catch the nuanced points that native speakers can, hence why I wanted to post here for advice.

Would this be a suitable translation for Tagalog, or is there a better alternative?

kamangha-mangha ang mga wika

Thank you in advance for any help you lovely r/Tagalog Redditors can offer!

Other What is the equivalent of the word 'saing' to English?

Kasi 'di ba ang pagsasaing ay cooking method? If you're a Filipino 'saing' is basically understood as 'to cook rice', pero method din siya ng pagluluto ng other things like fish.

Pronunciation Wedding vows help

Hello! I am getting married this Friday 9/4 and my fiancée is filipino.

During my vows, I want to turn to her family and say:

Iingatan ko po ang anak ninyo, at mamahalin ko siya nang buong puso ko

I need help with the first word iingatan. The other words make sense to me, but that first word I have trouble with.

I tried e-e-ING-ah-tan, and e-e-NYAH-tan, but they dont seem to sound right.

I would greatly appreciate any help :)

Vocabulary/Terminology I feel ashamed for struggling with tagalog, lalo na nasa state university ako

Magandang araw!

Nandito ako sa subreddit na’to upang mas-maunawaan ang kaalaman ko sa wikang filipino. Paalam kung ang mga pangugusap ay
‘di maganda o alanganin basahin. Ang layunin neto ay para bigyang immersyon ako sa wika natin, at siguro unting vent.

Ang kulit, e no?

Ayun. Pumasa. Napirmahan ng chairperson ang stub ko. Pabalik-balik, pagod, at magastos—pero ayun. Naka-transfer. Naka-pasok.

Kundi
sa kanyang sariling wika! Hear hear!

Gagawin ko ang makakaya ko para lang makasulat at makabigkas ang wikang pinoy ng klaro. Kaso wala namang perfect formula para dito. Walang quadratic, walang proofing. Ang kasama ko lang ay mga libro, tao, at motibasyon matuto. E, gagana ba yan sa overdue kong assignment? Siguro. Depende kong three ‘yan.

Nakakahiya, at siguro dahil makapal ang mukha ko, nakaka-iyak rin. May nagsasabi sakin na lumipat nalang, ‘bat bako nandito kung conyo ako? Deserve mo yan, mahirapan, e no?

Siguro nga—siguro nga wala nga akong karapatan mag-aral dito.

(Hello! I am learning tagalog one at a time again. I’m sorry that there are many grammatical mistakes. Siguro kung ibibigay ko ito, 6.5 lang ang matatanggap ko. Please give me advice on how to improve. I know this post is more of a vent than anything, and i’m once again sorry for that. I need to get used to writing, speaking, and breathing in academic filipino. As of now, i’m reading ABNKKBSNPL ako?! By Bob Ong. But i still get overwhelmed by things I dont know, such as grammatical structures. I never focused on structures in english either, i just wrote what felt normal to me. But with tagalog, i never know whats normal enough to pass as normal. If that makes sense?

Thank you for taking the time to read!)

Translation Want to know the context and literal meaning of "Papapwet yarn"

Hi, I'm new here and I don't speak tagalog, so my filipino friend posted "Papapwet yarn" on their Instagram note, and I wanna know the meaning of it. I've searched on Google, tried to translate with AI, Asked Chatgpt and gemini about the context and they said the literal meaning is "getting it from behind" but the context is like how we write in english "Getting screwed" in a frustrating sense. There's no "?" Mark on the note. Just says these two words. Please help me out.

Also asking my friend isn't an option :(

Other Living in Hawaii want to learn tagalog

I live in Hawaii and there are alot of Filipino people here. I am wondering what is the best app to learn that corrects you if your pronunciation is off. I am also wondering if Filipino people take offense to you greeting them or trying to speak talagalog to them. I think the cadence and flow of tagalog is very satisfying to hear the way it rolls is similar to Spanish in my opinion. I am choosing g tagalog because it is the one most familiar to me and alot of people I work with speak it.

Translation mag-syota meaning??

hello everyone and let me know if this should be marked nsfw lol

so i don't speak tagalog but i love OPM and specifically the band eraserheads, ive been trying to learn the tagalog in all the songs i listen to so i can appreciate it better & it's been really satisfying to recognize words i already know in new songs, etc
anyways i have a question about this word "mag-syota" that appears in the eraserheads song "shirley"?

the verse for context:

the next week, mag-syota na sila
magka-holding hands papunta sa C.A.S.A.A.
kung maglandian akala mo'y walang katabi

so when i google the lyrics and press "translate" it says the first line translates as "next week they have sex" but i question the correctness of that because i don't think that really makes sense in the lines? they have sex holding hands while walking to a place on their college campus?? maybe the translation is accurate & i just am not understanding the way the sentence is structured idk but also i know google translate sometimes gets lyrics really wrong so

usually i cross-reference with tagalog.com to find out a more accurate translation of each word but it doesn't have "mag-syota" as a word on there. and when i try to google it nothing really shows up? i guess "syota" is a word for lover or fling but that's kind of vague (maybe intentionally??) so im still confused

if anyone can clarify i would definitely appreciate it!! thanks

Translation Making a gift- need help translating

Hello Reddit! I’m working on a gift for a friend. She’s Filipina and every night before bed she has a ritual called “ tea and tagalog” where she makes Tea and practice her Tagalog.

I want to make her a book mark for tagalog text book with a little “tea and Tagalog” logo written both in English and Tagalog. Using Google Translate I wasn’t able to figure out the word for “Tagalog” (I tried Filipino as well but no luck) even if I did though, I want to make sure it’s right - if anyone could help me out that would be greatly appreciated :) Thank you!!

Grammar/Usage/Syntax Bakit ayaw gumamit ng iba ng salitang “ay”?

Instead of saying “ay”, ginagamit nila ay “is”. And it’s so cringey. For example: “Ang gusto ko lang naman is umasenso sa buhay.” Bakit iwas na iwas sa paggamit ng salitang “ay”?

Editing post to add:
It’s different from using Taglish. What I mean is using an entire sentence in Filipino and the suddenly the person avoids the usage of the word “ay” and instead use the word “is.”

Another example:
Si Maria is maganda.
Yung aso kasi namin is tumatakbo nung nangyari yun.

Grammar/Usage/Syntax Ano ang kahulugan ng Tining?

Karaniwang ko pong nariringgan ang Tining sa mga bagay na umiikot. Ang intindi ko po rito ay umiikot nang mabilis pero iba ang kahulugan nito sa mga diksyunaryo.

Tulad ng:

Turumpong pinatining.

Vocabulary/Terminology What's the Tagalog equivalent of "economic inequality " or simply "inequality".

Google says hindi pagka pantaypantay but I think there would be a better term. Hindi ko maisip. How would you say in Tagalog "the widening gap between rich and poor" in not so awkward terms?

Lack of equality - kawalan ng pagkapantay pantay - so awkward.

Hello! I just want to ask about this term "Poging Lamig". Naririnig ko na siya noon pa pero naging curious ako ngayon kasi tinatawag ako ng isa sa kakilala ko na ganito. I tried searching for it pero medyo duda ako sa lumalabas na meaning eh. Curious lang kung negative o positive ba meaning nito. Thank you!
