Franchise Community [Community Event] r/Tangled Soultember

Welcome to Soultember!

The month for soulmates.

And who better to represent that special bond and connection than Rapunzel and Eugene: The lost princess and the thief with a heart of gold who found her, coincidentally, right after stealing her crown. Whether guided by fate, or narrative. It can't be questioned that these two are forever tied by the universe itself. Heck! Even both the series and Rootbound placed his origins in the thematic opposite kingdom to hers.

If that doesn't scream 'meant to be.' what does?

That said!

The origin of soulmates spans centuries, and throughout the years the meaning has grown and evolved. So while there were a few of the more popular tropes chosen for the event, know that these are completely optional. You do not have to do all five. Pick one, combine multiple, or do none and choose your own. This is a free-for-all event where you can post however and whenever.

---

Optional Prompts

Red String of Fate

The thread of fate that ties two people together in an unbreakable bond, reaching across vast distances and worlds, leading their souls to one another. In this instance, perhaps it's the red hair of fate.

Star-Crossed Lovers/Ill-Fated Across Time

Think CLAMP's WISH/Kobato or Kanon, AIR, Dark, and Xenogears where Fate is real and it's not kind. Whether through reincarnation, divine curse, or a prophecy that says they can't stay. Star-crossed means misfortune ending until you find that one timeline that works.

Find Each Other in Every Universe

No matter the AU, the world, the timeline, life, incarnation, or universe, their souls will always find one another as they are meant to be.

Soulmark

The belief that the name or emblem of your soulmate will appear upon your body to guide your souls together. Some tropes combine it with a timer.

A Fairy Tale Through the Ages

The Story of Rapunzel and Eugene didn't just start with Tangled. An aged story for many generations with many different incarnations.

As said above, feel free to do all, none, one, or some or even some other soulmate trope.

Have fun!

(If using social media, use #tangledsoultember or #tangled soultember on Twitter/Tumblr/AO3/BSky/Instagram/Tiktok/Other and when posting on r/Tangled use [Soultember] )

EDIT: Because it apparently needs to be said. While star-crossed from Romeo and Juliet means the stars are against it and not meant to be. The trope has evolved over the years into 'not meant to be, but we'll make it happen anyway as soulmates.' Where the story typically goes to breaking the cycle, fighting god, finding the right timeline, or many other impossible feats to be together. Hence why it says star-crossed and ill-fated in the soulmate trope.

TV Series Continuity [discussion] Anyone realize that varian is written as more villainous than he should have been?

I'll explain. Varian seems to display a lot of sadistic tendencies, like saturday morning cartoon sadism then a boy who is trying to bring his father. Think about it, his cringy line to cassandra “i always knew i could sweep you off your FEET” to “he’s right, DAD” (which i like infinitely more, but my point still stands). It seems like the writers want to make sure we cannot sympathize with him, despite also depicting him wanting to get his father back. What especially stands out to me is when arianna asks varian what he will do after he frees his father. Instead of pausing, or ignoring her, he says that “corona will pay”. Um, what? Would his father even approve? His actions to free his father can be argued that he was backed into a corner and is desperate, but now he’s saying he actively wants to hurt everyone even after he gets what he wants?????????? How does that make sense????

What i also realize is that varian’s villain screentime is a lot less gripping then it used to be. When the episodes first aired, i wasn’t sure what was gonna happen to him, and i rewatched his villain moments again and again wondering how he would be redeemed, which is another can of worms itself. But now that the show has ended, i look back and see missed potential to portray more of an inner struggle. He could have been depicted as having a bipolar disorder and depression, instead of a regular disney villain. The writers also ignore the implications that a CHILD was chased out of his own home and had to “lie low”.

Tangled Classic [Discussion] Why Gothel hates mumbling

This may be a reach (i think not, though), but

i always wondered if there was lore behind why Gothel hates mumbling, and i came up with the idea that it's because Gothel thinks she can't hear, lol. She clearly has experience with her old body and with trouble hearing so when rapunzel speaks quietly or mumbles, it kinda triggers Gothel.

The several times she mentions mumbling in film is the first one, along the lines of "stop with the mumbling, you know how i feel abt the mumbling" that one kinda made me feel that she doesn't like when rapunzel can't articulate her own train of thought, but near the end of the movie she straight up says "SPEAK UP rapunzel you know how i HATE the mumbling" these all happen when she's been freshly rejuvenated so i think it even bothers her more, because she can't relax into her new self, cuz rapunzel is making her feel like her hearing is still flawed and we all know how paranoid Gothel is abt age, ESPECIALLY since a lot of what Rapunzel says is fairly intelligible.

Tangled Classic Why did Tangled era have to end?? Genuinely miss it so much!!

Hello, I’m 19, and I grew up watching Tangled during its classic era. I still think about that time quite a lot and how much it meant to me. I’d watch Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Pascal, Maximus, and the rest of the characters go on adventures, discover new places, face challenges, and experience the world outside the tower. There was just something about Tangled that I loved. I’d look forward to seeing what happened next, get excited whenever Rapunzel discovered something new, laugh at the characters’ personalities, enjoy the music, and just love how special the whole story felt. At the time, I never really thought about it becoming something I’d eventually look back on.

Watching Tangled now feels different. The world has changed so much since that era, and obviously I’ve changed too. The characters, the animation, the music, the songs, the adventures, and even the feeling of watching it as a kid all feel like memories from another time. I sometimes wonder why things can’t just stay the way they were. Why can’t you have the same characters, the same adventures, the same songs, the same humour, and that same feeling forever? I know stories naturally have to move forward and that nothing can stay exactly the same forever, but it’s still strange when something that felt like such a huge part of your childhood eventually becomes something you can only look back on.

I think that’s probably why I’m so nostalgic for Tangled. When I go back and watch it now, I’m not just watching a movie anymore. I’m remembering what it was like to be that age and experience everything for the first time. I remember getting excited for Rapunzel’s journey, watching her discover the world outside the tower, laughing at Flynn and Maximus, enjoying the songs, and feeling like there was always another magical moment waiting. That era of my childhood may be over, but those memories are still there, and I’m glad I got to experience them. I just wish I could go back to that time for a little while and have it feel the same again.

I guess I just don’t really understand why things have to change. Why couldn’t the classic Tangled era have stayed the same, with the same characters, the same adventures, the same music, the same humour, and that feeling of watching Rapunzel discover the world for the first time? I know stories and people have to move on eventually, but I still miss that feeling sometimes. Does anyone else feel nostalgic for Tangled and wish we could experience that time again?

Tangled Classic [Discussion] why does mother Gothel have scars(or strange pigmentation) on her arm?

Post image
126 Upvotes

Idk if anyone's talked abt this, but does anyone know why MG has these weird, strangely consistent triple marks on her arm? (One under wrist, second in the middle, last one near elbow) I understand wanting to add a certain look to the design, but these look very excessive and intentional. I hypothesize that they are marks or injuries that happened waay before rapunzel or even Corona existed, and they stayed that way cuz of how old Gothel is.

TV Series Continuity [Discussion] Does anyone else feel that the values in the Tangled series contradict those of the movie?

There are so many villains in the series who tried to kill Rapunzel, yet by the end, they were often turned into comedic characters and eventually forgiven.

For example, in one episode, a villain apparently hijacks a cargo ship. The original crew members never appear in that episode, so I assume they were probably thrown overboard? And yet, the villain's punishment was basically just being sent back Corona.

Similarly, despite everything they've done, Rapunzel is still willing to forgive the Stabbington Brothers. From Eugene's perspective, the two brothers had been his rivals since childhood, constantly crossing paths with him in Corona and various other towns. Their relationship was almost like that of family members who had spent their entire lives fighting each other.

Out of all the villains, only Gothel and Zhan Tiri actually die. This makes the values presented in the series feel somewhat contradictory to those in the movie.

Rootbound Continuity [Discussion] I am so excited, I get to pick up Rootbound at my local library tomorrow!!

I just learned about this book a couple weeks ago and I was immediately sold by the cover art! Rapunzel having her short hair but the tree behind her mimicking her long magical golden hair (down to the little flowers like the ones in her braid!) and the synopsis just made me want to read it even more! I immediately went online to my library website to look for it, only to find they didn't have it yet but they already ordered it and so I went ahead and put it on hold last week and this morning I got an email alert saying Rootbound is waiting for me! Ahhh, tomorrow cannot come soon enough! I've a feeling I'm in for a treat

Live Action [Live Action] Cassandra in Live action fan cast?

If Cassandra appears in either the live action movie as a surprise or if the movie ends up being a big hit & they do a sequel & they adapt parts of the shows for the sequel since we never got a proper movie sequel for the classic movie, who would be you fan cast for Cassandra?

Live Action [Live Action] solo song for Flynn or another one for Rapunzel? Spoiler

Heard people talking about how alot of the live action movies added new solo songs, would you be interested in Flynn getting a solo song since he didnt get one in the original, or would you like Rapunzel to get another one other than "When Will My Life Begin", someone suggested Rapunzel could get one when she finds out she's the lost princess similar to Jasmine's "Speechless" from Aladdin 2019, would you be interested in that

Hi! Heard this week is World Princess Week and I wanted to share my cosplay of Punzie ✨

The dress has been bought, while the wig is handmade! There are a lot of things I'd like to do differently if I were to start again, but I still love the result 🙂‍↕️

I didn't know which flair to choose because there's also my friend Himecchu as Varian, but my outfit is clearly the one from the movie ahah. Guess I'll put those pictures with her in another post!

My friend Dikappa_davidinik is the one cosplaying Eugene.
