Sundog is resting and his person is traveling. So he asked his media specialist to search his archives for a suitable ToT for today.

I just bought a baby tegu and they will be arriving Thursday! I’ve kept reptiles since I was 5 years old and now that I’m 21 and making enough money to comfortably support a tegu I decided to take the leap. I have a current 4x2x2 right now but will immediately start working on building the 8x4. I have done research on tegus for years knowing full well I couldn’t get one, but now I know I’m ready. I already have an overflowing dubia colony but I want to make my tegus enclosure bioactive so if anyone recommends places to get springtails and isopods lmk.

Potato can’t forgive me. I woke her up really early so she is mad at me. Steaky boy is so chill. I know they’ll like the new place. Hopefully potato will cheer up when she realizes that she can escape around the apartment any time she wants.

Sorry for the bad photos, my tegu is very wriggly.

About 2 years old. Looks like a male to me but unsure because of lack of jowls and distinct femoral pores

His tail regenerated when he was a hatchling. Can I resolve this at home or should I take him to vet now?

HELP! Enclosure advice!

Hi I am about to get a bonded pair of black and white tegus (1F and 1M) my question is what are some creative and innovative tank set ups you all have for your tegus. Obviously I want the best for my tegus but buying a $3000 enclosure sounds a little crazy to me and I’m a big DIYer so I feel I can definitely make something that’s amazing but don’t know where to go from this point I do not plan to get my tegus until tank is set up! But please give me every single bit of advice you have to building or turning furniture in to something! I need inspo and advice!

HELP! Brumation advice

Post image
20 Upvotes

This is Kaiju (no relation to the other Kaiju on this sub). He's about 3 years old, and this is my second real brumation with him. My first year with him he only slowed down, didn't really go down. This year, he started showing signs of slowing down REALLY early, like in early August. It's still hot as heck here in LA.

At first, I was still feeding, like I did last year. This year, he kept eating through the last couple months, but would sleep for four days or more after eating before getting up again to bask and poop and eat some more.

His last few sleeps have been a lot longer. On August 12th, he basked a tiny bit but he'd been down for more than a week, so I chose not to feed. He then slept until the 24th, when he got up and just napped most of the day in his warm hide. I didn't feed then either.

However, he then got up and was active a tiny bit on both the 28th and today on the 30th. I still haven't fed him since the 12th, but I'm starting to second guess that choice. Since his activity frequency has increased.

Have any of y'all had experiences where your animals did something similar? Should I just be feeding him until he chooses not to eat? Am I doing the right thing by withholding food? Would love input from keepers that have had more brumations with their animals than I have.

Sorry for the novel, and thanks!

TL;DR - my boy has been down for long but irregular periods recently and I'm wondering if I'm making the right choice by not feeding him. The Jewish dad guilt is killing me.

HELP! Some general questions for my new girl

Thumbnail

I've owned and raised many reptiles In my life. I've got a 9 year old ackie, had a pair of panther chameleons. So I'm not a new keeper, but it's always nerve racking with a new baby! My questions are I've heard kind of mixed things. Some people say you want an enclosure that doesn't have too many places to hide, some people say the opposite. Also some people say give it a week or two to get settled in. But then some people who really seem to love tegus like rose City reptiles say be gentle but handle them daily from the get go. I got my baby girl yesterday at the scales expo. I've got her setup in a temporary 4x2 until she gets bigger then she'll go into my 6x3. She ate a bunch of crickets last night. Today I waited all morning for her to come out and then by noon I got worried and lifted her hide and she was in there. She seemed to be awake the second I slowly lifted it she lifted her head and started tongue flicking. She let me pick her up and put her under her light to bask. Stayed for a few hours. Moved around to different spots. Then I left ate lunch and when I came back she was back in the hide. And it was maybe 330pm. So I pulled her out again now she's basking again. My fears is that she wants to brumate. But am I over reacting? Is she just nervous and more comfy in her hide? Humidity I've got a little higher than normal just because she was in a deli cup for a whole day at an expo and im sure it was very dry in that deli cup. So I wanted to make sure she's good. Sorry for the rant.

  1. Handle right away gently? Or wait? She's curious not TERRIFIED. But she's definitely a little nervous. If I set my hand in the enclosure she will tongue flick and come a little closer. But a few times maybe I went to quick and she'll stand up taller. And another time she gave me a tail wiggle so I backed off. And just stayed by the enclosure.

  2. Lots of places to hide or fewer?

  3. She didn't seem interested in the crickets today. She ate a blueberry while I was holding her at the expo. And then maybe 10 medium crickets. Today it's hard to tell the crickets may just be hiding, or she ate a few while I wasn't looking. But I don't THINK she did.

  4. What are the odds that the first day I have her she wants to brumate?

  5. My enclosure has a portion of the roof that is clear..should I cover that so she doesn't see a bunch of motion above her from like ceiling fan and stuff in my room.

Thanks and this is a picture of her setup before I hooked up the Arcadia. This is just basking bulb. Her basking zone ranges from 100 to 115. It's mainly around 105 to 108. Only the hottest part is 115. And I turned the light down just a little. I've been researching and planning for my tegu for over a year before I got her. And I've watched probably every piece of tegu info on YouTube.

Thank you. I've got some fake plants arriving tomorrow. They were supposed to arrive today but go figure.

HELP! Brumation preperations

Post image

This is my first brumation as my girl is a rehome. Shes been spending alot more time borrowed but shes still been wanting food still but I get mixed opinions on whether or not I should cut off her eating or wait for her to do it herself. She has also been more apex-y and less cuddly which I am assuming is in preparation. Shes been fixing her burrow more and has dragged my shirt partially into her hole as well as pushed leaves and moss into the hide she rarely uses as she prefers to sleep under her tree in the dirt. I have noticed her body comes off warmer than usual. Any advice welcome, shes an adult (4 1/2 years old).

Soooo excited. She's tiny so Im putting her in a 4x2. And I have a 6x3 ready to hardscape in the garage. And I'm well aware of how big she'll get I'll probably end up building an 8x4 down the road. But those 2 enclosures should last me a year or two

Names I need help on!

So far my friends have suggested...

Luma, Tilly, Neptune, Olive, Charlie, Fox

Please help me choose!!!

She is highly active every day between 11AM to 3PM, and she loves biting her toys. Sometimes she holds on for up to an hour, thrashing them around aggressively. Is this normal behavior for a one year old tegu?

Grigor, a veteran and grizzled Tegu leader

Hey! Just wanted to share an incredible fountain ink drawing by my illustrator, u/nickthagreek who is producing all the art for an anthropomorphic fantasy I’m working on called Capyhero.

Grigor is a black and white tegu serving as Pawville's second-in-command. Scars marking his speckled scales tell of a long history battling the Strays.

Those who know him describe a quiet, but intense presence. When he speaks, his community listens.
