A Drop in ASU Student Numbers - What Does this Mean for Tempe?

ASU and other public colleges are reporting sharp drops in enrollment numbers for foreign students. What kind of impact will be seeing in Tempe - especially with local restaurants, small businesses and local tax revenues? These students are usually pretty well-off and spend $$$ locally.

And for parents and students --- What will this mean for ASU tuition fees (since public colleges depend on out-of-state tution to help offset in-state tuition?)

See the latest Arizona Central article ....

https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/arizona-education/2026/08/30/international-student-decline-could-cost-arizona-80-million/91510485007/

https://www.azfamily.com/2026/08/14/asu-sees-steep-international-enrollment-decline-after-visa-delays/

TL;DR:

An analysis released this month by NAFSA: Association of International Educators and JB International showed that the U.S. could see 111,000 fewer international students this year, costing the country billions in lost revenue. That funding would have come from tuition dollars and all the money international students spend while living in the U.S., like rent, food and other living expenses.

ScreenPrinting Work Space

Hey all! I was going to Mesa Arts Center for a while to pay the studio fee and use their facilities for ScreenPrinting. They are no longer allowing day passes and I don’t have the funds to buy all of the equipment. Anyone know of somewhere else I could buy a day pass for studio time?

UPDATE: Axon Pursues ALPR Contract In Tempe

Thumbnail

When announcing the end of its Flock contract, the city of Tempe said in a statement it would “not seek another company to replace the system.” That claim is coming into question with the release of the agenda for the August 31 city council meeting. Item 8A1 on the agenda details a nearly $7 million contract with Axon for a variety of equipment, among them 11 Fleet 3 mobile ALPR cameras. Mobile ALPRs are less visible than typical Flock Falcon cameras, but can be even more problematic due to the increased potential for misuse and racial targeting from “gridding” techniques, in addition to key concerns about privacy and Fourth Amendment right violations that come with any ALPR technology.

You can help oppose this by emailing the city council, submitting a public comment, attending the council meeting on August 31, and speaking at the meeting.

Meeting details: Monday, August 31 - 6pm - Tempe City Hall (Council Chambers)

Council email: [council@tempe.gov](mailto:council@tempe.gov)

Submit a comment or sign up to speak: https://www.tempe.gov/government/city-clerk-s-office/city-council-online-meeting-comment-card

What's the cheapest place to get gas here?

Just moved to the area, and gas is pretty pricey here. Are there any places that have a good loyalty program to consistently get money off on gas?

Anyone in AZ looking to play some pool? 🎱

Looking for people to start a pool team - Tempe / Chandler / Mesa ®
Hey everyone, I'm 24 and live in the East Valley. I've gotten really into pool recently and I'm looking for a few people around Tempe, Chandler, Mesa, or nearby who might want to start a pool team/group together.
I'm still learning and improving, so you definitely don't need to be amazing. I'm looking for people who enjoy playing, want to get better, and would be down to meet up somewhat regularly to practice and play.
Eventually I'd like to get a team together for an APA or BCA-style league and maybe play some local tournaments too.
Beginners, intermediate players, and experienced players are all welcome. It'd actually be cool to have a mixture of skill levels.
If you're interested, comment or DM me. We could get a few people together at a local pool hall, shoot for a couple hours, and see where it goes.

Help us ban ALPRs in Tempe

Tempe will end its contract with Flock, and will not seek another company to replace the ALPR system. Now, we need that codified so that future city councils can't turn their backs on their constituents and take up a new ALPR contract. Help us demand an ordinance to ban use of ALPRs or ALPR data. We've proposed something similar in Chandler if you want to see details about what we're trying to do.

You can quickly email the council on our website. We also encourage people to come to the August 31 city council meeting and speak about the issue (details also on our website).

This would basically just make what the council has said they're going to do (or not do) the actual rule. About two-thirds of Arizona voters oppose ALPR use. Let's get this ordinance passed!

Best Flea Markets & Antique Malls in the Valley for Retro Video Games & Ephemera?

I'm trying to look outside of eBay, Craigslist, FB Marketplace, & used book/game stores for retro video games, consoles & accessories as well as ephemera such as collectables, magazines, promotional items, old Pokémon stuff, etc.

What are the best flea markets, antique malls, or "other" places to find these kinds of items in the Valley? I haven't been to a flea market in over a decade, so I don't know of any, but the one antique mall I visited (Merchant Square in Chandler) did not impress me.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Anyone have a mechanic recommendation for a Subaru?

Hey all, want to stop going to the dealership now that the Subaru is out of warranty runway. Any suggestions in the Tempe/Phoenix area that you've had a reasonable experience with?

Did a cursory search and didn't find much in the sub.

TIA

These guys have been hanging out in the palm tree in our backyard lately. I'm not sure how to describe the joy I feel when I see them - it feels so magical to see these beautiful little parrots in the desert. I love lovebirds 🥰 ♥️

Bright Horizons Childcare Center ASU Research Park

Looking for reviews, good or bad, of the Bright Horizons Childcare Center at ASU Research Park. I know there’s Google but some of the reviews are years old, so I’m curious if anyone can share any recent experiences with their littles that go there. We have an infant who will need care when we return to work. We took a tour and it looked promising compared to other centers we’ve seen. Would love to hear any other experiences from internet strangers! TIA!

I am pleased to see Tempe moving forward with a focus on privacy

The recognition that the risks of abuse of this system outweigh the benefits is a big shift in how the city has approached law enforcement work in the past. I hope this continues as we all face a growing surveillance state. A big part of freedom, is the right to privacy. A society loses that when they are under constant surveillance.

Recs for door replacement

My exterior patio doors have never fit quite right and they now let water in during storms (fun!).

Looking for a recommendation for a local company to work with that could help me with an adjustment or a replacement.

Thanks!

Pain points with Quantum

I currently have Quantum which should be the best option, but we're struggling with constant service outages and after having technicians over multiple times with no answers, I'm ready to look at alternatives.

Pain points:

- supposed to get 940 mbps, only getting about 200. (No furniture or walls blocking signal, devices are only 10ft from router & modem)

- losing signal multiple times a day every day for the past 4 weeks, takes anywhere from 5 mins to 2hrs to get back online.

- technicians have come to the house 3 times now and each one couldn't give me an answer as to why this is happening

What we've done:

- inspected the actual fiber cables, they're in good condition

- replaced both modem and router, and tried a 3rd party router, no improvement/changes

- moved location of router to top of bookshelf, no change.

My research:

- cox doesn't service my neighborhood

- quantum and century link is owned by at&t, so service would be the exact same

- we're looking at T-Mobile 5g, but have no idea what the actual specs are as the site is vague.

If y'all have any ISP recs, I'm open to suggestions because this ain't it!!

Called the city already and they let me know they don't need a permit as long as it's under 7 feet tall. But want to make sure I don't have it falling over haha

Barely ran a red light

A month ago I got flashed at the intersection for turning.

My car stalled and I got it running, drove with the group of cars and my rear tires were on the red line as the light turned red. I got flashed and sent mail that I need to pay or go to defense driving class or else my license would be suspended

What are the chances I could succeed in a hearing?

I graduated from my Master's in Business Analytics 4 months ago and I find it difficult getting a job in this market as an international student. I have experience as a data analyst for 2 years. I recently moved to Tempe, if you guys have any tips or referrals that can help me get a job, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
