This is much more down to earth and reasonable than I expected coming from watching the video

My first thought was “she’s not exploiting real kids so that’s nice.”

1.1k

u/DeliciousLiving8563 1d ago

You made me think: It's probably more real than most blogging families.

372

u/Pleasant_Werewolf_30 1d ago

Yes you bring up a good point. Those poor kids in those actual blogging families are likely to end up messed up. It's not content I usually watch because it makes me uncomfortable seeing people exploit their kids, and watching Stacey Dooleys sleepover series, The Family Who Live Online episode really confirmed that for me. But this at least feels better. At least no actual children are involved.

265

u/DeliciousLiving8563 1d ago

Yeah, I've reached the point in my life where I ask "does this hurt anyone and does it make the person/people happy?" and I can loathe it and still support it if the answers to that question are the right ones.

I find this weird, uncomfortable but this woman is "playing" for want of a better word and it seems harmless on learning a bit more.

If that's true then I hate it and find it really uncomfortable but I want to live in a world where she can be that weird freely.

Oh I just learned out it's not "freely" it's "making money hand over fist". Also good for her.

Same. Like ok when I play a board game I play exclusively solo board games because all of my local friends just don’t like boardgaming. I’m certain it comes off as weird to random ppl and that’s ok.

I noticed that most things or hobbies that seem weird are often reasonable and down to earth, people just don't want to listen sometimes

283

u/IAteAllYourBees_53 1d ago

Grown men play with trains and create tiny towns while being a conductor. I guess this isn’t really any stranger than that!

74

u/maladaptivedreamer 1d ago

Right? Parenthood in general is not something I’m really into so I can’t really relate to this hobby but as soon as you reframe it (with like you trains) it’s really not that weird.

I kind of wonder if the doll thing is looked down on just because it’s an interest or type of play that’s more more woman/female-coded while the toy train example is more man/male-coded.

To be fair, their faces do kind of creep me out (but so does Thomas the tank engine soooo…)

8

u/Kay-Chelle 1d ago

I can sorta answer that question! Doll collecting as a hobby is absolutely looked down on, especially because it's more 'fem' coded. There's been an increasing amount of hate towards and within the different doll communities, which tend to have more women, LGBTQIA+ folks, and neurodivergent people. (I'm all 3 lol 🙈). I've seen lots of hate & calling it 'overconsumption core', but male dominated hobbies are not receiving the same hate.

I've been collecting dolls for almost 15 years now, and while I much prefer fashion dolls (I mainly collect Monster High with a few other lines) I understand that everyone has their own preferences, and at the end of the day the dolls are there to bring joy, play, love, comfort, and definitely can help with grief and other like emotions. I've had to unlearn the harmful mindset of being judgey about others hobbies. Just because my dolls are 'more fashionable' than baby dolls and the like doesn't make them 'better' or less weird to collect. I don't care for the baby doll style but so many folks love them, and that's so wonderful for them. As long as they aren't being hurtful towards others or spreading hate then I say do what makes you happy! I very much enjoy seeing folks bringing 'play' into adult life! It's something that doesn't need to stop at childhood but we've been so heavily conditioned to think and do so. Play can look different for everyone too! For me 'playing' with my dolls is brushing & styling their hair, posing them for display, and taking photos.

People think that's strange? Are you not into trains?!

11

u/Baron_Bearclaw 1d ago

And there are grown men who like to play SportsTeam GM (both as fantasy sports and video games). There is nothing wrong with a hobby as long as it isn't harming others.

I mean, I play the Sims, and when you think about it, it's just like playing dolls.

31

u/FirstDukeofAnkh 1d ago

I appreciate this perspective. I grew up on a farm. Swore I would never do be a farmer (long days, hard work, not much reward). But I’ll play Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley for hours. It satisfies the small part of me that misses farming.

Somehow we’ve become generous with digital “dolls” but we (I include myself) judge a lady who plays with real dolls.

126

u/PubicPlant 1d ago

And her being married and having kids that are adults now makes this less weird for me

43

Thanks for some context. Sometimes vids get posted and their context is hidden or not included which can make things seem unsettling or weird. As a collector of 1/6 scale figures I can’t judge that much. My figures are designed to be as realistic as possible within the restrictions of the manufacturing process. Realistic headsculpts, clothing and accessories to represent a love of a character/movie/TVshow/actor and/or sports star. That being said I don’t go into roleplay like their hobby seems to but still, horses for courses I guess.

71

u/Saelyn 1d ago

I was just thinking, this isn't really any different than someone with a ton of model trains or a rigged out flight sim. I enjoy models and Legos myself. Some people might think it is cringe to play pretend as an adult, but it can be genuinely fulfilling for some and there is absolutely no harm in it.

After reading this (as a 40 yo who does custom Gunpla, dresses up as a American revolution colonial, and loves table top wargames) shes not weird at all. We don't have enough play in our adult lives and she just chooses dolls to spend her adult money and playtime on.

49

u/PlanePainting 1d ago

Plus she's making a lot of money with her hobby!

My father used to do war re enactments all the time with his friends

24

u/Many_Bat_ 1d ago

Isn't it funny, there are commonly acceptable ways of being "weird".

Somehow locking into your niche and being original requires explanation or receives judgement.

Meanwhile, how normalized is it that grown adults with no social life go home after work and stare at a screen, pretending to shoot people in the head over and over again until bedtime? More than normalized, it's mainstream top-seller material.

The bar is very low, but I’m kinda glad this is just a fun way to play for her (lets be real is it really any different from adult men playing kids video games?) and not, you know.. a mental illness brought on by the death of her baby.

71

u/lovable_cube 1d ago

That’s kinda how I feel about this too. Her having connections to reality makes this much less creepy. It’s still weird, but much less concerning.

7

u/Anarchyr 1d ago

25

u/luxii4 1d ago

I read romance novels and play video games so who am I to judge about pretending as an adult? I don't get it because taking care of four kids that young in age would be a nightmare not my idea of fun. But then again, it's not like real life so I can probably keep 4 fake kids alive. It's probably like when I played American Truck simulator or Guitar Hero. All the fun none of the real problems.

Bit of a long story here. But here we go.

I was in the Army from 2001-2008. I had full custody of my daughter, who was born in 2000. I was stationed at Ft. Campbell KY, home of the 101st. The reason I mention that, is because of the high frequency of deployments of the 101st.

I had full custody because of neglect and drug usage from her mother, and because of that, I had my daughter in a pediatric psychiatry program.

One visit in particular sticks out the most to me. I had met a nice lady in the waiting room, she had a baby in a one of those carry-arounds that snap into place in the car using one of those base thingy's. Not sure what they are called, but you get the picture.

My daughter had finished her therapy session, and she came right out and was instantly interested in the lady with her baby. My daughter was perplexed at the baby being a doll.

This lady's husband was in 5th special forces group, and had deployed while she was pregnant, and had passed away overseas.
She had undergone so much stress from losing her husband, she had a mis-carriage. The trauma of both of these events led to her getting this baby doll, to help her cope. My heart broke for her.
She said the only picture she had of her husband as a child was him on a wooden rocking horse. When she is home, she also had a wooden rocking horse for her doll baby to sit on.

2.1k

u/Queerability 1d ago

We do this a lot in nursing homes as well, for dementia patients specifically.

A lot of them tend to regress, and then panic when they can't find their child, the dolls help them with that. They usually take better care of themselves when they have the dolls as well, because they get back into their old mom schedules, and it's easier to get them to eat when they also "need to feed" their kids. Otherwise they're usually fighting you on every little ounce of care because they "need to find their child."

I used to work in elder care and something I noticed is that many of the older people LOVE babies. There must be something instinctive from our history as tribal societies where the elders who aren't fit for manual labor anymore care for small children while the adults hunt/gather/farm/etc. One of the biggest things older people struggle with is feeling useless and burdensome. We often talk about how the "nuclear family" puts more of a burden on parents but not how it takes away an important role from our elders. I've seen deeply depressed seniors light up like the sun when they get to hold a baby.

159

u/Queerability 1d ago

Yeah, my dad was in a care facility when my youngest niece was born during Covid. My sister took her to the window outside his room and held her up for dad to see, and he just lit up the same way he always when my sister was a baby.

My niece looks JUST like her mom, so it was an especially happy moment for dad because they always had a special bond.

104

u/TenDix 1d ago

There should be a combo nursery/day care and old folks’ home where they can overlap. Obviously, with supervision and proper training, but it would even be nice if there was just a glass partition where they could watch the kids play or something. It seems like a win win.

60

u/NrealisticUmbrella 1d ago

There are some places where this is done, and it does seem to be a great benefit to all involved.

10

u/AdventurousAbility30 1d ago

Yes. In my area they can coordinate with local animal shelters, and have a "kids & kittens" party day. They bring in animals who are up for adoption, and invite families/schools to participate at the long term care homes. It's been a benefit to all involved, and adorable to watch.

33

u/burnedbygemini 1d ago

i love this idea, but then i think of Covid and how easy it is for kids to pass germs and then the elderly are often immuno-compromised. But then again, i think the psychological benefits might outweigh, or even prevent, the physical

29

u/Inky_Madness 1d ago

I worked in a place where there was an inter generational program and it was great. But absolutely had to have supervision and limitations on the seniors who participated because some of our residents also were, ah, not allowed to be around children.

This is super interesting. I’m in my 40s, and I’ve literallly never been into babies. I don’t think they’re cute, they don’t trigger any innate desires in me. (I feel differently about animals) I wonder if I’ll like babies when I’m old.

15

u/honeywhereismypenis 1d ago

Haha maybe! My grandpa is a bit of a dick and definitely was NOT paternal when I was a little kid. One of my earliest memories of him babysitting me is being forced to mow the entire lawn with a push mower when the handle was above my head and I couldn't get it up the slope of yard. But my youngest "cousin" (she's his partner's granddaughter, not actually related to me... or him, for that matter) is the light of his world. She even has her own bedroom in his house, not a guest bedroom mind you, that's HER room and nobody else is allowed to use it. It's such a 180 from when I was a kid that I can't even be bitter about it because it's just funny, like "who the fuck are you and what have you done with my asshole grandfather" lmao

Man, to continually think you've lost track of your child sounds so stressful, especially as it's totally real to them. Dementia really really sucks.

71

u/minpin75 1d ago

Its so sad. I'm a nurse and would occasionally get Dementia pts. The women always stress endlessly about getting home to get their kids off the bus..to the point of hysteria. The men always have to get to work or catch a train to work. It is the saddest torture ever. Its like an endless loop of panic during their most productive time in life

23

u/OblinaDontPlay 1d ago

This happened to my grandmother when she had Alzheimer's. She was always worrying about getting dinner ready for her children. She also would sometimes regress the opposite way, and get upset that she was late getting home to her mother and father. I can still hear her in her thick Queens accent with her voice cracking, saying "My motha and fatha ahe waiting for me." We had a lot of strategies for those moments, but goddamn did it break my heart.

12

u/minpin75 1d ago

I'm so sorry the you all went through that. Those strategies do help to minimize the stress, we use them as well when they dont have family to help them. Sounds like you have a lovely family

38

u/anonymouse278 1d ago

I had severe PPA after my first pregnancy- it was never psychosis but I was really struggling- and one of the worst symptoms was that I woke up dozens of times a night, more often than the babies did, convinced that I had been holding my babies in my dream and then experiencing utter panic when I realized they weren't in my arms. Of course I realized after a moment that they were safe in their bassinets, but it didn't change how heart-stopping it was every single time I woke up and discovered them "missing."

I can't fathom the misery of just being mentally stuck in that horrible moment forever. Dementia does indeed really, really suck.

u/basketofselkies 1d ago

9

u/Queerability 1d ago

I'm not in the job anymore, I left when I joined the military to be a medic, and now I'm a gemologist (wild career path I know).

Unfortunately I'm not physically capable of doing most medical jobs anymore. Even if I could, where I lived CNAs still make barely above minimum wage ($7.50/hr starting) in that state, so I don't know that I could financially manage it anymore because rent has nearly tripled there.

I do still miss it though. I had the best residents and they were my biggest cheerleaders when I joined the military.

21

u/Sea-Age-5018 1d ago

When I was about four weeks post partum we went for a walk with the grandparents. I went to a park restroom and they decided to keep walking. The absolute panic I had, I started screaming for them to find out what trail they were on it was so intense.

Like if anyone remembers the golden compass, not having your baby be where you expect them to be reminded me of when the daemons were being ripped from the kids.

12

u/Queerability 1d ago

My grandfather was similar, but flipped around.

He'd try to fight to get out to go check on his mom, who he was very close to (and because she really was a phenomenal woman). She was the only person he still remembered pretty much perfectly by the end, her picture always made him smile like he was a kid again.

It never leaves, and it isnt predictable, but I have learned to live with. I found that focusing on the happy memories helps. I avoid thinking "where would she be now" thoughts at all costs.

Damn, wasn’t expecting that first thing in the morning.

Want to point out that the lady in the video stresses incredibly hard that this isn’t reflective of loss, she does this as an art form.

126

u/JetWreck 1d ago

In that case, it looks like she has too much time and money.

86

u/Icy-Career7487 1d ago

I thought I was on the anticomsumption thread for a minute. Those dolls have more toothpaste and toothbrushes and hair bows than any real child that I actually know.

15

That's the one thing I noticed, her bottle collection was fucking wild too. She has SO MUCH stuff it's looking more like an obsession than parenting.

Can understand the grief as someone who lost a child but for me the dolls are too upsetting. My mother has one and it just makes me spiral when I see it. Anytime I see a video like this I recoil, not from cringe but from an overwhelming sense of sadness for the women and the pain that must have brought them to this place.

21

u/Inevitable_Air_2382 1d ago

Jesus that is fucking heart wrenching

78

u/Foreign-Cat-2898 1d ago

Not nearly as horrific but when my husband was with our daughter and she was a newborn, people constantly thought he just had a doll in a stroller.

He didn't understand the level of broken people thought he must be to have a doll in a real car seat stroller.

The second I was there everyone knew baby, but just him? Must be a doll. Cause...that makes more sense somehow?

u/LuxNocte 1d ago

10

The concept of men being nurturing and willingly - enthusiastically! - taking alone time parenting their own children is so at odds with some people's view of gender roles that it makes more sense to them that a man would have a doll in a stroller than an actual baby.

Gina Kasoff has 5 real children that already adult. She started the channel as a satire but ended up making 200k per year so she keeps doing it. At least that's what che claimed. Her family is supportive. Her husband is the cameraman and can be seen in some of the videos.

865

u/ImaginaryCrow9395 1d ago

For 200k a year she is the definition of to be cringe is to be free. And no real children are being harmed in the process.

She’s very transparent about this being for fun. Her children are all grown and have left the house. She makes these videos as a form of art, giving the kids shitty personalities and all. She knows they aren’t real. She just likes dolls and thinks making scripts and acting with them is fun. It’s not that deep guys and cringe is just cringe. She’s being herself and having fun and making some money while doing it. No harm.

170

u/query_tech_sec 1d ago

Yeah I read her explanation and this isn’t content isn’t for me at all but I do get wanting to play like we did when we were kids. So ultimately I support her. I hope she keeps doing whatever brings her joy and it must be very popular for some reason - so she’s found her people. Good for them.

(Yes, I read the top comment, and yes, I actually, unironically, 100% agree with her and totally get where she's coming from, but also, this thought came to me while watching the video, and it would be a shame if it went to waste, so I'm gonna type it out anyway)

Imagine breaking into her home to rob her, and you panic because you think you just woke up her room full of babies and they're all gonna start crying, but then you check one and realize it's a doll. You realize that they're ALL dolls. Unsettled, you try to leave out the window you came in from, only to find that it's been locked, and you hear her voice from the corner of the room where she's been sitting this whole time:

"Did you come to play too?"

No one's been able to find you since, but every morning she walks into the room and flicks the lights on to say, "Oh, you finally decided to wake up. Let's get you ready for the morning!", and no matter how hard you try, you can never tell her no. In fact, you can never do much of anything now. But for some reason, when you cry, even though your new doll body can never make any noise, or cry any tears, she always seems to know and tells you "Shhh, there's no need for that. You're safe here with me, forever."

26

u/SavlonWorshipper 1d ago

A couple of years ago at work I visited an old lady at home in relation to a collision she was involved in. It was bizarre from the start- there was no damage to her car. She was telling us she had already been visited by plain-clothes police and a car insurance assessor, for a collision that happened just the day before. I'm not sure about insurance, but there was no way any detective would have been interested, and we were the first police dispatched, but she had a little diary of names and phone numbers and notes about this collision.

She spoke normally, to the extent that we were concerned that the "plain-clothes police" were fraudsters, so we checked CCTV cameras near her home to see what happened. We also checked the location of the alleged collision, and later had confirmation that there was no collision at all via CCTV footage.

On our second visit, after we determined essentially nothing had happened, we were invited into the sitting room which was covered in dolls. It was a real light-bulb moment. She had adult children, her husband was dead, and her imaginary world had strayed into reality. Some of our time was wasted, but she didn't come to any harm or loss, so no worries.

23

u/celestialkestrel 1d ago

Reminds me of that guy who's entire thing is to sit and stare into the camera for hours at a time. At some point, a man breaks into his house, opens the door to the room where the guys sat staring at the camera, then casually leaves.

And the guy filming himself doesn't break character but you can see him freak out in his eyes

u/Krunzuku 1d ago

My daughter woke up early and asked me to lay in her bed at like 4am. Crawled into her bed and asked if she was feeling ok. She didn’t respond. Reached over and felt a cold doll face and absolutely fucking panicked.

36

u/ThirdOne38 1d ago

Not a doll story but one night I went to check on my 1 yr old and saw her lying still with her pillow soaked with blood.  Talk about panic. Turned out she was fine but had a bad bloody nose

9

u/CrayCrayB 1d ago

Tangential story: My daughter was 1.5 years old and I went to pick her up from daycare. It was a hot summer so she was wearing just a short sleeve onesie over a diaper and her legs were uncovered. When I got to the daycare, I saw her standing across the room and I could clearly see a bruise on the back of her thigh. It looked like a thumb mark to me.. I crossed the daycare room rather quickly to go look at the mark, already planning the murder & hellfire of whomever had abused my baby... only to discover it was a blueberry juice. They had blueberries as part of their snack a few minutes before I arrived and apparently she had sat on a blueberry whilst in her high chair. WHEW!!!

A lot of people who have these dolls have suffered a tremendous loss or they are also used for dementia patients. That being said this woman is just doing it for content and she’s said that many times. She has a husband and a teenage daughter. She doesn’t use real baby formula, she uses flour and she eats the food she gives them or puts it back for later. I think it’s strange and I can’t imagine how much money she spends on the dolls and the accessories. I’d like to say who cares because it’s not hurting anyone but I am curious about what her daughter or her daughter’s friends think about it.

I can understand a grieving mother using dolls like this as a coping mechanism. I can when understand this lady doing these videos to showcase her product line for those very same mothers.

What I do not understand, and cannot let go, is her using actual formula for dolls. We are only a few years removed from a dire shortage of formula, and probably only one recall or warehouse fire away from another one. Doomerism aside, there are babies in foster care today that could use that formula more than a doll.
