Active disturbances


Active disturbances are areas of showers and thunderstorms which are not organized enough to be considered full-fledged tropical cyclones. Disturbances are often designated as investigation areas (or invests, for short) by NOAA in order to allocate additional resources such as high-resolution satellite imagery or model guidance for further study of the system. Though there is no publicly disclosed set of criteria for which disturbances are designated as invests, the designation often occurs after the disturbance forms a closed area of low pressure. Invests are designated regardless of the overall potential for the disturbance to become a tropical cyclone.

Potential formation areas are areas that are being monitored by various agencies for potential tropical cyclone formation within the next two weeks. These systems have not yet formed and are not considered to be disturbances until such time that a tropical wave or area of low pressure does form. Discussions are created on this subreddit for areas which are monitored by the National Hurricane Center in the eastern Pacific and northern Atlantic basins. Discussions are not typically created for areas which are monitored by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center or other agencies, as this information is not always publicly available.

Storm overview


This discussion is for Tropical Storm Saudel (17W), which is active over the South China sea off the coast of southeastern China. Saudel originated as a disturbance which formed to the north of Micronesia on 12 August and moved northwestward across the Northern Marianas Islands and across the Ryukyu Islands before making landfall over eastern China on 28 August. The storm degenerated into a remnant low shortly after landfall but remained organized enough that it regenerated once it reemerged over the South China Sea.

Saudel is not expected to strengthen much as it remains close to the coast of southeastern China over the next few days. The storm may bring heavy rain and the risk of flash flooding to the coasts of Guangdong and Fujian provinces, as well as Hong Kong and Macau.

This discussion is for a disturbance which is active over the western Pacific just east of the Northern Marianas Islands. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) has designated this disturbance as Invest 95W. The disturbance remains poorly defined and is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The disturbance will drift generally northwestward and cross over the Northern Marianas Islands into the Philippine Sea on Tuesday or Wednesday. There, environmental conditions may be favorable for further development, and a short-lived tropical depression or storm could form later this week.

The storm reached typhoon strength as it passed very close to the northwest of the island on Saturday morning. Since then, the storm has moved to the north and will continue moving northward over the next few days. This discussion is for Tropical Storm Lowell (12E), which is active over the east-central Pacific, far to the east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands. This system is currently moving slowly northeastward, but will turn sharply westward as a mid-level ridge builds back into the region after Post-Tropical Cyclone Iselle dissipates this weekend. Lowell is expected to enter the central Pacific on Sunday afternoon and approach the islands later in the week.

It remains far too early to determine the exact timing or extent of any potential impacts to the islands. Residents of Hawaiʻi should continue to closely monitor this system as it develops.

Storm overview


This discussion is for Hurricane Karina (11E), which is active far to the west of Mexico’s Clarion Island. The storm has rapidly intensified into a major hurricane and may continue to strengthen overnight, reaching a peak intensity at Category 4 major hurricane strength by early Monday morning. The storm will then start to gradually weaken as it moves over cooler sea-surface temperatures and into a drier and more stable environment later this week.

Karina is moving west-northwestward along the southern periphery of a mid-level ridge positioned to its north. The storm will continue along this track for several days and may enter the central Pacific as a low-end Category 1 hurricane on Friday afternoon. Karina is not expected to threaten land within the next five days, but could influence the track and intensity of Tropical Storm Lowell as it approaches the central Pacific late in the upcoming week.
