I'm currently putting together a teaching resource for primary school pupils about different scripts/orthographies around the world. The task has 18 translations of 'languages are amazing/incredible' in various languages which have differing scripts. I've checked the translations with multiple online translation tools, but I'm well aware that these do not always catch the nuanced points that native speakers can, hence why I wanted to post here for advice.

Would this be a suitable translation for Urdu, or is there a better alternative?

google translate says its dar ul hukumat but ive never heard that irl, rajdhani is probably the word in the hindi variant.

My Indian college has 50% muslim students. The languages taught apart from english are hindi, arabic, sanskrit and french.

Funnily all students who have opted for arabic ar urdu speaking muslims. And they all communicate w the lecturer too in urdu.

I’m thinking of organising a bazm e urdu event at my college.

Students can speak urdu but not read and write it.

Urdu is an endangered language although it has been an integral part of our tehzeeb.

Suggest me ideas like debate, mushaera, etc. to gather students to celebrate urdu.

How is/was it done at your school or college?

Sometimes I (20F) write Urdu poetry but I am quite embarrassed about it. Recently I started thinking more about this habit and wondered if I should take it seriously. Here’s what I wrote a year ago:

aaj jee bhar kar dekh liya lekin jee na bhara
ruswai ka zarra zarra chakh liya lekin afsos na hua

teri nazuk si muskaan mein talaash kiye thay kuch khwaab
khwaab toh kiya armaan bhi na milay koi khaas

han such hai ke giraftaar hun teri deewangi mein magar
qaid toh tere aks mein hoon, alfaaz ki kiya fikar

teri har ik baat lagay seenay ko jaisay koi khanjar
teri har ik saans mein chupi hai saazish koi aksar

woh tera zara zara sa tokna, woh teri har ik naseehat
tarpaati hai yun jaisay iss waqt ki thi koi qeemat

Hi everyone!

I’m from Palestine, and I’m planning to marry a Pakistani, so I really want to learn Urdu. The problem is that I currently know basically zero Urdu.

I’m not necessarily looking to learn extremely formal Urdu or the kind of language you’d find in a textbook. I want to be able to actually communicate with Pakistani people in everyday life like casual Urdu, common expressions, slang, jokes, texting, etc. Basically, I want to understand and speak the way people actually talk with their family and friends.

I’m a native Arabic speaker and have native-level English, so I’m wondering if there are any resources or methods that would work particularly well for someone with my language background.

I also don’t have a huge amount of free time, so I’d prefer something efficient rather than spending hours every day studying grammar and vocabulary.

For those of you who speak Urdu natively or learned it as a second language:

- What would you recommend for someone starting from absolute zero?

- What resources are actually useful for learning spoken/casual Pakistani Urdu?

- Should I focus on speaking/listening first and worry about reading/writing later?

- Are there any YouTube channels, apps, podcasts, courses, or other resources you’d recommend?

- What should I prioritize if I can only spend maybe 20-30 minutes a day?

- Are there particular differences between textbook Urdu and the Urdu people actually use casually that I should be aware of?

My main goal is to eventually be able to comfortably talk to my future Pakistani family and understand my partner when she speaks Urdu, In'Shaa'Allah
