Just swapped out my RSL Speedwoofer 10SMK2 for this pair of Dick Sequerra MET 8 MK IIs with active DSP crossover, powered by my Carver m1.5t, and WOW. Just WOW. I really liked the speedwoofer, but these subs are so much more articulate and musical, with absolutely no flabby boominess. With EQ and plenty of power they extend pretty much as low as the speedwoofer too! Don't sleep on quality vintage passive subs!

A local estate sale company posted this KR-5010, available through an online auction. Current bid price is $62 (plus a 15% "buyer's premium"). Auction ends in 7 hours.

All I have are photos. I cannot inspect the receiver before bidding (no preview auction). The receiver is 100% untestested, with no word on whether it even turns on (although I think I see some lights on in the VU meters, so I think it turns on).

Would the buttons likely fall off? Or do you think it's more likely that the buttons and whatever the buttons attach to have been pushed into the unit? Is this a common issue?

I'm more of a Sansui and Pioneer guy, and am not familiar with Kenwood.

In anycase, i don't think I should bid much more than $70 on this (meaning I would pay $80.50 with the 15% "buyers premium).

They don't seem to go for much on eBay. A "very clean" and working KR-5010 sold in July for $250 (+$32 shipping), while some other working pre-owned units sold for $200 - $220.

"Parts Only" units sold for $75 (+$54 shipping) to $125 (+$20 shipping, and the $125 unit also worked okay-ish from the description). The parts only units all looked 100% complete from the photos. No missing buttons.

A ridiculously cheap thrift find. The GoldStar works beautifully, but that Sharp is in need of a little TLC. Hoping a simple cleanup and belt change will have it working good as new.

Hey all, just picked up this beauty on FBMP for $50. I didn't need another receiver but it was just too pretty to pass up. The face plate is nearly IMMACULATE, just needs clean and polish. At least some of the lights work, and sound does come out, but I haven't started a full eval on it yet.

Any known gotchas to watch out for? Thanks!

JVC KD-25, I normally would've passed cause I dont need another player, but at that price in mint condition and good belts... I might aswell 😂 Someone just left it in the testing station too. Nearly passed by it!

I have 2 Bose 901s that I bought new I 1988. I dug them out today and want to consider making them bluetooth or wifi to avoid 30' of cable. Is there a device that I can connect to my speakers for signal and plug into AC for amp power?

I'm stoked to own a power amp with VU meters.. However, I haven't hooked it up as I worry about possible broken components.

Would it be worth trying it out? Were these known for any issues on the board like Onkyo M-504's?

#2 I have two set of speakers, which are the bose 4.2 1985 and some Technics SB-2744.
They both sound good but in different ways, technics has more bass and Boose more clarity.
Maybe will try using all 4 sometime but Idk if it will sound better...

Anyone use a zobel network in parallel with your speaker lines? If so, why and did it change the high frequency at all?

I'm looking to get a spectrum analyzer for my stereo system only for the visuals, as I prefer to listen to my system flat.

I love the bouncing analyzers of my Pioneer cassette deck and wanted to add a visual for the rest of the system.

I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a spectrum analyzer standalone unit, or display heavy graphic equalizer that could add some life into my system.

Here are some images of stuff that has that display I'm after, but I'm open to newer/older stuff if the price is right (sub $200)

I currently have a JVC RX-212, and it’s used for:
1. As a power amp for the front L/Rs in my home cinema system, connected to my AVR
2. As a receiver for my best older things, I have like 20000 amplifiers in my name but this one is the best all-rounder for my best tape decks, CD players and one of my reel-to-reels.

I recently bought ”new” (only 45 years old…) speakers that probably could use some more power, but my primary reason of thinking about switching is to get more stereo RCA inputs. My budget isn’t too high and I’ll mostly be looking at eBay and some local online and offline marketplaces.
I haven’t decided whether it’s worth it to buy a new one or not, but if I decide to do so, what models should I look for? I’ve looked a bit at the JVC AX series which seems quite promising, but they’re not very common and quite expensive at times.
What other brands and model lineups do you recommend for these 1980-1995 ish stereo receivers?
Having A/B speaker switching is a must. An integrated tuner would be nice too but I think I’ll have to use my standalone Pioneer tuner here. Thanks for reading this entire paragraph if you made it this far!

Goal:
I'm feeding a Raspberry Pi 3.5mm into the PU input of a 1956 Philips B2X60U tube radio. Signal chain: Pi 3.5mm out → passive stereo-to-mono summing (2×470Ω + 10kΩ to ground) → 10kΩ level pot → Monacor FGA-35 audio isolation transformer (1:1, for galvanic isolation) → banana plugs → PU input. Power side: radio is run through a 100VA mains isolation transformer for safety (verified with a multimeter, chassis reads ~0V to true earth).

Problem:
Constant 50Hz hum/rumble on the speaker, only when the setup is actually connected. Behavior:

• Signal wire disconnected, ground wire connected: ~10% hum (baseline)
• Nothing connected at all: ~10% hum (same baseline)
• Both signal and ground connected: hum jumps to 100%, loud, constant, unaffected by the pot position (turning the pot all the way down does nothing)

What I've ruled out:

• Speaker itself is clean: tested the exact same passive summing + pot + FGA-35 chain directly into a normal external speaker, completely clean, no hum.
• Normal radio reception (AM/LW) is clean, no hum, so the amp/PSU/speaker chain in the radio is healthy on its own.
• Not a wiring/cold joint issue in my build, continuity-tested every stage individually, and the "external speaker" test above confirms the whole chain up to the banana plugs works.
• Not proximity/orientation of the isolation transformer to the radio — moved it from 1.5m to 15cm away, no change.
• Not shielding of the last cable run, added shielding on the last segment (isolation transformer output to banana plugs), no change.
• Not the exposed tip of the banana plugs picking up interference — pulled heat-shrink as far forward as possible, no change.

Question Does this pattern (fine until both signal+ground are connected together, external cabling changes make zero difference) sound consistent with a coupling cap or grid-leak resistor issue at the PU input to you? Any other internal culprits I should check before I start pulling the chassis apart? Tube lineup is UCH81/UF89/UBC81/UL84/UY42, in case that's relevant to which stage is involved.

Had a few 80’s and 90’s but this is my very first 70’s stereo, a Pioneer SX-990. Took a chance and bought it As-Is, was stored in a garage missing top and bottom screws and a bit dusty. Gave it a clean and vacuumed as best I could before plugging in. Was fairly happy when it turned ON, backlighting is out but already ordered LED replacements. Once I receive the lamps I will be Deoxit the control knobs. Did some testing with a Dual 1228 turntable and Realistic Minimus-11 speakers. Sure has a nice sound to it, really warm like. Thinking of getting some affordable period correct speakers to better match the esthetic, any recommendations? There’s some Sony SS-310 speakers locally that seem to match but not sure if there a match for sound.
