Hi - I saw a scene on television probably 30 years ago and I think about it from time to time. I cannot figure out what movie/show this is from ... just found this reddit, so I thought maybe I could ask here ...

I'm not sure of the exact setting, but at the time I assumed it was a Vietnam war movie, but maybe Korean war? In the scene, a caucasian solider (American?) is captured, with his hands bound. His captor leads him to a river and tries to force him into it. At this point it's revealed that "the bridge they've been looking for this whole time" is actually submerged about a foot below the surface of the water. This allowed the combatants to cross freely, but the bridge was undetectable from aerial photography.

FWIW, I remember it being in color ...

any idea what this was?

If I remember correct, its about two british friends, who come into trouble with the law and are given the choice to join the army instead of going to prison. I believe they are sent to some war in the middle east, and one of them becomes the camp bitch and people haze him and spit in his food. Maybe he commits suicide and then I believe his friend kills their superior.

I once a few years ago watched a clip from a Japanese war film on YouTube that I think was released during WWII. I think it was set in the Second Sino-Japanese war as it was in China. What I remember was that the battle scenes were in an urban environment. What struck me though was that it was filmed like a documentary. It looked like a view of the fighting and movements in a city from a building window with long shots. It was reminiscent of 'Westfront 1918' in terms of combat scenes. I did all the digging I could but can't seem to find it. Much appreciated!

I just watched FURY for the first time recently and I think it’s a pretty damn good movie I really enjoyed the cast especially seeing Shia lebuff not playing a basically clinically insane man and i always love seeing bernthal in things that aren’t marvel. But I do think the plot kinda dragged especially with that almost 30 minute long period in that mom and daughter’s house. I would personally rate the movie an 8/10 and I wasn’t expecting it to end that way

Movies that take place during a war (or right after) and it’s a part of the plot, but the combat aspect isn’t the main focus. Like Gone With The Wind, Ip Man, Schindlers List etc. I think the best of them all is Life Is Beautiful, about an Italian Jewish man arrested and sent to a concentration camp where he has to convince his son it’s all a giant game.

Seen behind enemy lines a hundred times but want something from another perspective, thanks in advance

I'm not sure how accurate or realistic Blood Diamond actually is. My knowledge is limited, though my understanding is that:
- PMC = Executive Outcomes (Colonel Coetzee = Eeben Barlow), though the PMC and Colonel in the movie are depicted as intentionally prolonging the conflict via arms smuggling so they can get more money which I thought to be strange, as Executive Outcomes was a legitimate business and the conflict wasn't entirely centred upon the premise of diamonds (though it was a key point in the war)

- Rebel = Revolutionary United Front. It exaggerates Captain Poison as some pragmatic all-leader of the RUF although they were historically fractured among their ranks and also positions RUF as a group of rebels purely in it for the diamonds (as mentioned before)

- Danny Archer = A solo mercenary? He appears to be some smuggler who likes to moonlight with the PMCs in the movie, working alongside Colonel Coetzee as a "loose cannon" of sorts, though this is to me, unrealistic because they would never send out a single operator to do whatever the fuck he was sent out to do.

In the film, it also shows the locals as entirely defenceless peoples that have no chance without the protagonist, Danny Archer (which I feel to be a little bit of a white saviour trope)

I'm curious to watch one. I've always been very interested in the Russian Civil War, especially the Bolsheviks.

It’s remarkable, really, how people can write such amazing, “unlikable” characters. Reiben is one of my favorite examples of a godawful character you somehow can’t get enough of. You THINK you’ll hate him, but at the end of the movie you love him to death. From Brooklyn with an insanely fitting temper. Hell, he was almost shot for it. I want people who read the book, watched the movie, or BOTH to tell me what they thought of Reiben. He’s one of my favorite hotheads in media with the caliber of Raphael from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. To me, it was fascinating that HE was one of the sole survivors next to Upham. A decision I loved and questioned deeply.

Just finished watching 1917 and really enjoyed the first half. The whole movie was great but i was wondering if there are other movies that follow two guys just trying to make it through? I really like the "you watch my back i watch yours" dynamic in movies and i cant figure out if its a specific genre Edit: its not technically a war movie but im suprised nobody mentioned the dredd movie. That's basically what im looking for.

I have encountered three types of people when it comes to this movie - Ones who love the film as a whole, those who hate it to their core and those who accepts that it's not a bad movie but opposes the pro American and war messages. I find myself in the third category.

As a movie, I think it's good and does it's job. The war sequences are executed well with really good cinematography and choreography. But the writing and just the whole narrative was trying hard to glorify the US military and wars. I also heard the real life person which this movie is based on isn't really a nice person as the movie portrays him to be.
