This is the Weekly Question thread designed to allow players to ask their one-off tactical or rules clarification questions in one easy to find place on the sub.
This means that those questions will get guaranteed visibility, while also limiting the amount of one-off question posts that can usually be answered by the first commenter.
Have a question? Post it here! Know the answer? Don't be shy!
NOTE - this thread is also intended to be for higher level questions about the meta, rules interactions, FAQ/Errata clarifications, etc. This is not strictly for beginner questions only!

When do pre-orders and new releases go live?
Pre-orders and new releases go live on Saturdays at the following times:
Is secondary mission scoring optional? For example, if I have No Prisioners and I destroyed an enemy unit, do I automatically score it or can I choose not to? I ask this since the text in Chapter Approve uses the wording "you can score" so it sounds optional.
How would the Incubi ability to force a battle-shock test "at the start of the fight phase" and a chaplain's one to unbattleshock a unit "at the start of any phase" interact?
It depends whose turn it is, see the rules for rules sequencing in 01.03.02.
The active player’s rules will always trigger before the non-active player. If it’s the Drukhari player’s turn, the test would happen first and then the chaplain will be able to unbattleshock after.
If it’s the Marine player’s turn, you would have to use the chaplain first, and then the incubi trigger the test after. So you can’t immediately unbattleshock in this case
Tau have the following stratagem, Photon Grenades:
WHEN: Your opponent’s Charge phase, just after an enemy unit has declared a charge.
TARGET: One T’AU EMPIRE GRENADES unit from your army that was selected as one of the targets of that charge.
EFFECT: That enemy unit must immediately take a Battle-shock test, and until the end of the phase, subtract 2 from Charge rolls made for that enemy unit
I just want to make sure I am using it right in the change to 11th.
I am thinking i wait for them to roll their charge, then use it only if they then decide to charge a Tau Empire Grenades unit.
Can they charge to a different target if they can no longer make that charge?
Yeah sequence is correct; they roll their charge then declare a target. If they pick one of your Grenades units you may play the stratagem.
This will reduce their roll by 2 until end of the phase. If your unit is now beyond that modified range it’s an ineligible target and they can pick a different target within their modified range (X-2) else if there isn’t any other targets they pick none.
I’ve attached the relevant FAQ. The way this works is, they roll the dice, they select a unit within the maximum distance, and only then do you use the stratagem. Then, because of this FAQ, if the modified roll is no longer enough to select your unit as a valid charge target, your unit becomes ineligible and they can reselect charge targets (but with the -2 modified applied this time).
So you as the T’au player have all the information before using the stratagem, and you’d only use this if it makes it so that they wouldn’t have enough to select you anymore.
This is going to be an ask your TO situation, because RAW it’s non-functional. From what I’ve seen, the general consensus is to have it change the first miracle dice you get each battle round to a 6, and then for the one you get in the second turn of the round you roll for it like normal.
Question, this first came up against my first match against Emperor's Children but how exactly does precision and wound allocation work. So I understand that precision forces one of my leaders to take the initial damage from the save rolls but question is after precion happens and my leader takes 2 damage and doesnt kill it. If my opponent were to attack me with a non precision attack, how does the wound get allocated? When I do my groupings would I do bodyguard then leader? And if damage goes through, would it be applied to bodyguard units because it wasn't a precision attack? And another thought that came to mind as I was writing this that didn't occur, what if my opponent were to use the explosive strategem, would that damage be applied to only the leader or could I apply the damage to the bodyguard?
Precision forces you to put the Character as the first allocation group. After that occurs and the leader is wounded the rest plays out as usual. Any normal new damage gets put on the Bodyguard Unit, same with Explosives. The only thing that can damage the Leader again before the Bodyguard Unit is more Precision Attacks. You can have cases where you have simultaneously wounded Characters and Bodyguard Units.
05.03 - The regular order is: Wounded non-character > non-character > Wounded Character > Character
So cover is checked on a per weapon basis? so if the first weapon in a unit kill the 1 enemy model with no cover do the rest of the attacks need to take the cover penalty?
In a Tournament, how do you deal with someone not declaring their attacks correctly?
For example they declare all weapons from A go into B, but then halfway trough rolling their attacks they reach a weapon with multiple shooting Profile and only at that point declare to use profile x, or declare that they "obviously" not meant to shoot their one shot weapon.
I know that this often happens without bad intend, but still they gain information by this.
secondary assassinate state for character model destroyed so twin lance and fabius bile have two models does destroying surgeon acolyte or one of the lances count as mission achieved or not?
Yes, assassination only cares about a character model dying, not a character unit, so if you kill one of The Twin Lance, that counts. However, it would not count the Surgeon Acolyte, since that model does not have the character keyword. If you look on Fabius Bile’s datasheet, only Bile’s model has the character keyword.
On new recruit it is a little weird to read but thanks to you it cleared my mind so thank you. Do masters of maelstorm benefit from fabius biles buff +1 to strenght and toughness?
If your unit gets to consolidate after fighting, and it doesn't have an enemy unit 3" away and it's already within an objective terrain area, can it do a consolidate move at all?
Yes, in this case you select objective consolidation. Models already touching an objective can move 3” in any direction, so long as they finish touching the objective
If your unit is within range of 2 objectives, you pick one to consolidate towards, and you must touch it if possible, or just end the move closer otherwise.
If I have a Astra Militarum Krieg Command Squad with a Death Korps Of Krieg unit (that were in strategic reserves) arrive by reinforcements during the Move phase (after the Command phase) does that means that the Command Squad does not get to issue an order?
This is the important line of text from the Voice of Command rule: “OFFICER models can issue Orders in your Command phase and at the end of a phase in which they disembarked from a TRANSPORT or were set up on the battlefield.”
So you can issue an order at the end of the movement phase, after the unit was set up.
Ok two questions about the layouts, example below.
Why do the layouts use the terms "obstacles" and "ruin walls" instead of "dense" and "light" terrain from the rules? Are they synonymous?
On a practical level, what are the main differences between the two categories? I think I am aware of two: (a): dense terrain can grant "gone to ground" while light terrain can't. (b) things other than infantry/beast/swarm/mobile can't move through dense terrain
Assuming you got the layouts from GDC, that's actually a question for them, not GW. GW simply has the map colourcoded the same way so to answer your question, the words are interchangeable - just not officially. There is no actual official term/definion for Ruin Walls and Obstacles in 11th Edition.
Correct, Dense offers Gone To Ground, prevents certain models moving through it, provides LOS blocking bits. Light Terrain allows any model to move over it. You can look up the actual differences on the 40K App, even the Free version has all the rules.
Don’t rely on 3rd parties for rules accuracies. Yes, you can use a single 3DP detachment in Incursion games, this is in rule 25.04, right at the very bottom.
“** If you are playing an Incursion battle, you can select a 3DP detachment as your only detachment.”
