40k Event Results Sunday Night Stats (August 28th-30th)

This chart tracks all singles events with 21+ players and 5+ rounds.\**

\*EDIT: I have added more information. Starting with this weekend, I'm going to start adding 4-0 starts. I believe that it shows something possibly more important than pure X-0/X-1 results.*

We have our first weekend since the balance update, but as in July, we had a mix of events using it and not using it, and some events did not clearly state whether they were using it or not, so take all results with a grain of salt this weekend.

A few observations:

Most of the armies that were on top are still doing just fine. Orks, Emperor's Children, Dark Angels, Chaos Daemons, Votann, etc., continue to put up strong numbers. While Thousand Sons had a very high* (edit) overall win rate, their low X-0/X-1 could mean that they're very good at going 3-2, but have a harder time than other top armies at actually pushing through to the top tables.

There are some positive signs for some armies that had been struggling. Death Guard, World Eaters, Aeldari, Grey Knights, and Black Templars all post pretty decent results overall, as Black Templars have their best weekend of the edition so far and World Eaters get another event win.

Astra Militarum returns to its rightful place at the bottom after a surprisingly amazing previous weekend at ~47%. Chaos Knights continue to struggle badly as well, though they at least had one player go 4-1.

Lots of things in flux this weekend, but I imagine all events will be using the balance dataslate next week for a clearer picture!

40k Discussion Is there any play you would consider "unsportsmanlike"

What i mean by that is not withholding information like a strategem or lying strait up but feels bad plays. Is there anything you wouldn't do even if you could? Have there been any moments?.

Played against Necrons once and i surrounded his immortal so he couldnt fall back even if he wanted to. which also made it so he coudnt shoot my unit. Since he had little melee units in that corner the game was over then and there because i would kill his immortal and then be in his back line.

I felt really bad, but i didnt know if it was unsportmanlike like my opponent said it was.

40k Analysis All Is Dust! Top Performing Competitive Thousand Sons Lists

Hello Warhammerers,

The August dataslate has visited us and we have yet again been punched right in the duster. WTC has also been and gone since I last posted one of these and we've seen that, despite us solidifying around that mid-table bully status, the best players can still have great success with the army.

We aren't seeing a lot of interesting builds at the top tables at the moment - mainly because most people are defaulting to coven which is essentially 50% locked in. Feel free to go check out Alex Fowler's list at WTC if you want to play 10th edition for 3 more years. However I wanted to shine a light on some lesser known combinations.

GRAND COVEN

Terroxer El Rojo - 5-1 @ Warmasters

Disposition - Priority Assets

Magnus The Red

2x Exalted Sorcerer (Incandeum and Umbralefic Crystal)

Infernal Master (Vortex)

Sorcerer

4x5 Rubric Marines (2 with Flamers, 2 with Boltguns)

1x Rhino

1x Mutalith Vortex Beast

1x2 Sekhetar Robots

2x2 Spawn

2x2 Tzaangor Enlightened

1x Forgefiend (Autos)

Let me first start out by saying that most of us aren't good enough to play this list. Your micro positioning has to be exact. You need to understand every profile in the game and be very good at making space. I'll also say that this list was nerfed in the slate so you'd need to find 25 points.

The things that will jump out to you will be the lack of terminators and the bolters on the rubrics. Terroxer has always been the guy who runs Exalted Sorcerers (indeed, gracias sir for getting them nerfed) but here we have the Sorcerer and Infernal Master running the boltgun squads to let them benefit from the leader rules.

Forgefiends are very nice for us at present. One issue that this archetype of this runs into is that it's liable to be run over by the terminator spam or blood crusher type list. The Mutalith and Forgefiend can help deter a bum rush.

Fantastic run by Terroxer at the hardest event in the world.

RUBRICAE PHALANX

Alex Jessen - 4-1 @ Warmasters

Disposition - Take and Hold

Ahriman

2x Sorcerer in Terminator Armour (Lord of the Rubricae)

2x Sorcerer (Risen Rubricae)

2x10 Scarab Occult Terminator

1x10 Rubric Marines (Boltguns)

2x5 Rubric Marines

1x Rhino

1x2 Chaos Spawn

1x2 Sekhetar Robots

1x3 Tzaangor Enlightened

1x3 Tzaangor Enlightened with Fatecaster Greatbows

Again this one has gone up - 30 points to find to maintain it which I don't think is impossible.

I ran a very similar list to this at a recent GT to some success.

Scarabs probably remain our single best datasheet at the moment and they play this kind of game very well. You can choose Rubrics or terminators infiltrated depending on your matchup, along with the robots. We are typically scoring home in this one so one of the challenges is having no sticky and needing to push to secure 3 objectives on most maps.

The terminators and the rhino bound 10 man Rubrics make the push. For me the key element is probably the Rubrics. Dumping out 21 OC onto objectives can completely deny primary for opponents, lethals and extra AP can cause a lot of issues for even tough enemies. In the days of everyone playing Magnus, Defilers, Robots and Scarabs I think we've forgotten that Rubrics rerolling wounds on objectives is fantastic.

Ahriman attached to Rubrics is something you don't see often. As a leader he offers less than some other options but with wound rerolls potentially he's a little better and he still offers +1 to cast here, something lacking from the list otherwise.

WARPFORGED CABAL + SEKHETAR COHORT

Mike Muzeni - 4-1 @ Onslaught

Disposition - Priority Assets

Daemon Prince with Wings (Warp Cursed Runemaster)

2x Tzaangor Shaman (Perplexing Cloak, Warp Syphon)

Sorcerer (Occulus Infernum)

2x5 Rubric Marines

1x Defiler (Autos and Plasma)

2x Forgefiends (Autos)

3x4 Sekhetar Robots (Meltas)

1x Helbrute (Fists and Flamers)

2x3 Tzaangor Enlightened

For those of us looking for something outside the two stock 3DP detachments, Warpforged probably offers the best path forward. Here AoWs Mike runs a beautiful list. It almost doesn't need explaining but I'll do it anyway. Again its gone up but only by 10 points so we can just remove the WDPs enhancement.

3 infiltrating units of shooty robots make for fantastic skirmishers who can sticky and/or action and shoot. Its perfect for making space and staving off melee rush into the action objective. The Sorcerer can buff one unit of these per turn to have those meltas and rockets hitting on 3s. Behind them a defiler and 2 forgefiends make for a hail of fire able to take out almost anything in the game.

Often we see a credible counterchange threat in warpforged lists. Sometimes this is the robots, sometimes people run Maulerfiends, here we see a Helbrute doing that job. Double flamer is actually quite an erudite move as it means the Helbrute can essentially run without support, shooting the same profile as the Sekhetar heavy flamers and dealing a lot of battleshock tests. What is attractive about this is its not limited to non monsters or vehicles. In melee, 7 attacks at 12/-2/3 will put off a number of people from committing into the robots with substantial assets.

Lost to Custodes.

Kyle Trayah - 5-1 @ Upkeep

Disposition - Priority Assets

Ahriman

Exalted Sorcerer on Disc

Tzaangor Shaman (Perplexing Cloak)

2x Defiler (Autos and Plasmas)

2x Forgefiends (Autos)

3x Sekhetar Robots (Meltas)

1x Tzaangor Enlightened

3x Tzaangor Enlightened with Fatecaster Greatbows

Another one with a 10 point bump courtesy of the absolute BS escalator on TSons Defilers. Solved for just by switching out some of the bowgoats for spears.

Here we see a more purist approach to Duststorm, almost eschewing the army rule in favour of maximum output from the defilers. Not much to explain here. Priority Assets is a ridiculous disposition which essentially forces opponents to deal with you. When they come out, you smash them with the defilers and forgefiends - assuming they aren't blown away by your ignoring shooting mods robots which will take at least a turn to deal with.

Loss came to Tau (which randomly had 3 of the top 4 spots at this event). Great run Kyle.

CHANGEHOST OF DECEIT + RITUAL OF REGENERATION

Michael House - 4-1 @ Krootcon

Disposition - Reconnaissance

Kairos Fatewaver

Lord of Change (Duplicitous)

2x Exalted Sorcerer on Disc (Tome of True Names, Eruption of Vitality)

1x Sorcerer

1x Infernal Master (Diabolic Savant)

2x5 Rubric Marines

2x10 Pink Horrors

1x Rhino

2x Mutalith Vortex Beasts

1x10 Tzaangor

Suuuuper fun list here. I genuinely believe Ritual of Regeneration is our most interesting detachment and pairs, arguably, best with Changehost. Alas - I (and I assume many people) don't have the big birds to run this.

Interesting to me is no Scarabs here. This is ridiculously strong as a combination for them, allowing Scarabs access to -1 to hit, regen wounds and models, -1 to charge, 5+++ against mortals and melee grenades. However we are playing Recon so the MSU playstyle is far better advised.

This list has it all, a redeploy, uppy downy, primary missions that often don't really care about OC, 2 Discies who are near immortal in some matchups and 4 big, hard to kill monsters to shrug the shitty 5 man + character pressure units that EC and CSM love. Indeed, even the rubrics and discies are getting a 4++ against shooting from the detachment rule so there is a decent level of resilience at play here on top of the movement potential.

Lost to EC. Great job running something off meta to success Michael.

THE BLESSED TRIPLE (All 1DP Detachments)

David Burdett - 5-0 @ Edmonton

Disposition - Disruption

Exalted Sorcerer

Exalted Sorcerer on Disc (Occulus Infernum)

Sorcerer

2x Sorcerer in Terminator Armour (Walking Rampart)

1x10 Rubric Marines

1x5 Rubric Marines

1x10 Scarab Occult Terminators

2x4 Sekhetar Robots (Meltas)

1x Mutalith Vortex Beast

1x2 Spawn

1x3 Tzaangor Enlightened

1x6 Tzaangor Enlighted with Fatecaster Greatbows

This man is my hero.

There is so much to be excited about here. Ritual, Sekhetar Cohort and Servants of Change in one place? Making Disruption work!?! Did you say Servants of Change!?!

It sounds mad but this is the most beautifully written list in the whole write up in my opinion. Everything in the list benefits from one of the detachment rules and Disruption actually just got a buff in the last slate. Worth noting that this also ate a 20 point nerf in the last slate but I think I've adapted it by making Walking Rampart a discie and the spawn into another unit of spear goats.

Ok so how does it work? Two units of Robots can help with the action economy, something that only really comes up in Take and Hold and Recon but is obviously a key part of the matchup against PA. However we have 2 units of spear goats and a lone op disc who can help out here. The 10 man Rubrics are led by an exalted which makes them ridiculously hard to kill. They have a massive overwatch threat and can res 2 models a turn on top of their 4++ save. They are likely locking down the expansion objective for 16 points on Primary and any attendant secondaries. Late game they can also push up the board assuming we sticky the expansion early with the robots.

Terminators are probably better than Hexwarp here and almost as good as Phalanx. They can heal to bring models back, gain mortal wound protection and can do melee grenades to help with the fact that they can't fall back and shoot. Indeed its possible that between doombolt and that strat, we are doing 11 MWs.

The real beauty of the list actually comes through the Servant of Change elements though. If you've ever played into PA you'll know that many games come down to dealing with cheap units of hidden infantry/beasts doing actions somewhere that you can't interact with without exposing assets. Here we have a MVB and a loneop 18" unit with 18"-21" detection range. It's perfect for deleting a low commitment effort by a PA player to action on the middle and essentially amounts to a trade in primary for them. The unit is also rapid, able to advance and shoot for a potential 22" of zooming, shooting, slowing non vehicles/monsters move and charge by -2 through the discie and then fall back if they do move within 8". We haven't seen much of this unit since the codex came out but Servants might just be what they need to come back in a big way.

Incidentally I think you could make this work for Take and Hold by turning the MVB into a Rhino and the sorcerer's 5 man into a 10 man Rubric squad to have 2x20 OC units.

Great job David.

CONCLUSION

So its not all doom and gloom. Yes, our easiest path to success probably runs through Coven but I definitely think we have some options for alternatives. The Cohort detachment seems key to me for most of the dispositions but Phalanx definitely still looks to have some play (at least the 20 terminator version), Warpforged has some flex in it's builds (assuming you own Forgefiends) and it looks to me as though a triple 1DP option might be viable for us.

For me I'll be trying the Mike Muzeni list and the David Burdett list ahead of my next GT in October. How about you?

40k List On a Losing Streak, Need Help with my List and Strategy

Went to a RTT this weekend and went 0-3, then played a league game the next day with the same list with one small tweak and lost a fourth game. I've been playing Take and Hold Ceramite Sentinels this whole time.

I played good opponents this weekend; all my matchups went in the top 6 out of a 16 person field. I lost 50-100 versus triple C'tan Awakened Dynasty in round one; then faced Lions Custodes in rounds two and three, losing 78-81 in the second round that came down to a navigator battleshock earlier in the game and my opponent scoring plunder at the bottom of turn 5 to pull out the win. Lost 83-90 in round three that was a blood bath with a lot of melee in the midfield.

Fourth game of the weekend was a league game versus EC Coterie. My opponent had double defilers, fulgrim, and one WDP with the usual EC infantry filling out his list. I lost 68-91, IMO because I left over 1k points of his army alive on 1-3 wounds. I failed to pick up the LE in one of his LE+infractor squads in my turn 1, which stayed alive the rest of the game. I left Fulgrim alive on 1 wound. I left both defilers alive after my turn 3, which sealed it. I killed one in t4 but the game was all but over by then. If I had picked it all up, we both would have been left with 400ish points of stuff to play out the last two turns, but he still had these huge hammer units. One defiler left on 2 wounds overwatched my RepEx on 4 wounds and killed it.

I can point to certain decisions and outcomes that were swing points in my games; my opponent heroic intervening with his Custodian guard onto the center ruin in battleround one, out OCing me there where if I had paid more attention to the positioning, I wouldn't have charged; me failing a heroic intervention against a LE+infractor squad, then in my turn choosing the wrong order of activitions to prevent my RepEx from shooting and killing that squad due to Hidden.

But I also wonder if my list has obvious flaws. Here it is from the RTT:

Archangels (1,995 Points)

Space Marines

Ceramite Sentinels (3 Detachment Points)

Take and Hold

Strike Force (2,000 Points)

ATTACHED UNITS

Attached unit 1

Darnath Lysander (100 Points)

CHARACTERS

Techmarine (80 Points)

BATTLELINE

Intercessor Squad (80 Points)

  • 1x Intercessor Sergeant

  • 4x Intercessor

OTHER DATASHEETS

Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs (85 Points)

  • 1x Assault Intercessor Sergeant with Jump Pack

Ballistus Dreadnought (150 Points)

Ballistus Dreadnought (150 Points)

  • 1x Infernus Sergeant

  • 4x Infernus Marine

Land Speeder (105 Points)

  • 1x Multi-melta

  • 1x Onslaught gatling cannon

Repulsor Executioner (265 Points)

  • 1x Heavy laser destroyer

Scout Squad (65 Points)

  • 1x Scout Sergeant

  • 4x Scout

Scout Squad (65 Points)

  • 1x Scout Sergeant

  • 4x Scout

I have access to 3 redeploys from an enhancement; usually I used those to improve my board position. The Land Speeder always ingressed from reserve; I typically put my shooty terminator brick into deepstrike and rapid ingressed it. Scouts would typically screen and if they survived, get pulled off the board to do secondaries. All my Terminators were OC2, so I would send them to fight and die in the center and my opponent's expansion. My Infernus were points filler; in my first game they started embarked within the RepEx, but in my next two games I started them on the board and they screened out my deployment zone.

In my 4th game, I made an adjustment to remove the Infernus, using the points to attach a Terminator Ancient to Lysander's unit for even more OC and damage buffs as the unit took casualties. I added the Fallback/Shoot/Charge/Action enhancement to my Terminator Captain as well, as limited mobility in this detachment was a factor in my loss to Lions Custodes.

Could my list use a tune-up? Or am I just bad? 11th edition hasn't been kind to my W/L record.

40k Discussion Questions about line of sight.

So i have a few questions about line of sight since i play with 2 different groups which play line of sight completly differently.

So how i play with group A is if any part of the model and i mean any can see you, you can be shot. Distance is still measured from the base but for example a riptide can look around a corner with his weapon or Magnus can see from his wings.

This group also plays with hidden and gone to Ground that if any part for example the tip of a weapon can not be seen you have gone to ground.

Today i had a match where my opponent from group B disagreed with this and said that you can not measure from anthing that overhangs the base if you dont have the frame keyword.

And he also said that you can't draw line of sight to the base since it is not part of the model and you have to see the actual model.

I was very confused but often had disagreements between group A and B when i played. He said as an example that a knight could turn his weapons *if magnetised* and then turn them back in after shooting so i would have to see from something on the base of the model and not the weapon.

40k Analysis Reflections and goals following first tournament

Howdy folks,

I played in my first-ever 40k tournament this weekend: 5 games over 2 days and I wanted to get my thoughts out about how it went and where I go next.

Bit of background; I’ve been playing 40k since 2nd ed but only ever within my friend group. I played all the time from 2nd Ed through to 6th, missed out on 7th, returned for 8th but didn't play much in 24/25 as life was busy lifing. I got back into the game again seriously this year for 11th edition coming. For most of that time I have been a Chaos player and at this tournament I took CSM.

I decided that if I want to get more regular games in that need to start playing at the local club scene as my friends and I are all to old and too busy now to be able to casually play at the weekends.

Over the last couple of months since 11th came out I’ve been trying to step up to playing at a different level; I signed up for the event and went in with the goal of getting 1 win and anything else would be a bonus. Really what I wanted to gain was insight and see how high above me the bar was.

I finished on 1-4 so I got my one win, and still slightly annoyed at myself as it could have been 2-3 but I wasn’t paying attention to my Primary on the first game and threw it away doing the wrong thing.

Core Issue: Army Build

First up it was very clear that my army just didn’t work. What Warpstrike wants to do doesn’t pair well with what Devotees wants to do, even if there is overlap in key units. I found myself fighting against myself as much as my opponents when I had goals to achieve and was being held back by my own forces not working in tandem.

Lesson: There’s plenty of room for fun builds, pet minis, favoured tactics and not everything needs to be a “meta list”; but it still has to work or it’s not worth all that painting if my stuff never lasts on the table! Cut the units that did nothing, double up on the ones that did extremely well.

Core Issue: Staging

I thought I fully understood how terrain area mats worked; I did not.

Lesson: Learn. The. Maps.

Core Issue: Attention Load

The constant noise in the room, the enforced speed of play, the tracking of all the in-game information was fairly overwhelming at by the last game on Day 2 I ended up halting the game for 10mins as I just needed to sit outside the room and literally cool down.

Lesson: Multiple points here:

  1. First off, the official app is too fiddly to check what you need at speed so I’m making laminated flash cards of my key units and my stratagems so that I can glance at what’s needed if I can’t remember in the moment to take some of the pressure off.
  2. Secondly, standardised tokens. The majority of players at this event were using the same set of tokens for Battleshock, Deep Strike spacing, wound counters etc and the consistency between games really helped. I imagine every local areas probably has their own stuff but I’ve bought a set of what these guys were all using because then I’ll be able to see what their units are up to but they’ll also be able to track mine without nvaigating my personalised system of little beads and markers.
  3. Lastly, at one point I just had to tell a guy at the table next to me who would absolutely bellow the result of every dice roll to calm down a bit. We all get caught up in the moment, but people need to be aware of their surroundings too and that there are other players in the room.

Matches

Day 1, Game 1: Chaos Space Marines [Loss]

Pretty evenly matched, he was Huron’s Maruaders and had a very infantry based list. We were neck-and-neck with rarely more than a point between us, but at the start of Turn 5 instead of making a play that would have clearly won me the game (deep striking onto both his unguarded home objective and an open expansion one) I got caught up in the moment, dropped everything as close to the centre as possible to help win a tarpit of a fight, and lost because I failed the charge. I was so intent on finishing off his Chosen + Fabious Bile unit that instead of playing to my game I played to his and it cost me my first match.

Day 1, Game 2: Drukhari [Loss]

I got taken apart by this army, he had a huge number of jetbikes, venoms, bodies all over the place. He got turn 1, blocked out the board, and I was basically stuck in my own little corner of the map the whole game as there wasn’t much point going Uppy if I couldn’t come Downy anywhere. I learned a *lot* from this guy about precision sight-lines, exactly where to place a single model to really mess up someone’s day. Really enjoyed this game but was totally overran.

Day 1, Game 3: Chaos Daemons [Win]

Did well in this one, learned the lessons from my previous game partners well and took this guy down smoothly. He had 2 Great Unclean Ones that were suffering the same problem as my Defiler – enough space theoretically to move around the board but barely any space to situate such a big base – that they got trapped and my Obliterators were able to take care of them one after the other. The one game where my havocs did anything useful was this one where I managed to take a big chunk of health  of his Bloodthirster and then the Defiler killed it in combat. Vashtor got stuck fighting a Beast of Nurgle for 3 turns in a row who just would not die.

Day 2, Game 4: Grey Knights [Loss]

Only game I got actually tabled in. I was not prepared for Anti-Chaos 4+ everywhere, so much mass shooting, and so many Sustained Hits. In one turn of shooting I lost my Defiler, Vindicator, Terminators, Cultists, and half my Chosen. I made him pay with my Obliterators and Mutilators who killed all his Dreadknights and several Purifier Squads but it wasn’t anywhere near enough. Also did not have to enjoy “playing through” Turns 4 and 5 with literally no models but I get that it was important for him to get his points for the overall placing of the event and if we’d stopped when I conceded he would have been down points artificially. There has to be a better system than that though than keep punishing someone who's already clearly out of the game.

Day 2, Game 5: Genestealer Cult [Loss]

I was losing the will to live by the point and didn’t make many good decisions at all in this game, but I was actually in lead coming out of Turn 3, however a couple of failed charges in Turn 4 and a Secondary I forgot to score meant I never recovered enough. The issue I had here was there was a mortar parked in the back corner that was stopping me Deep Striking into his field. Every turn I told myself there was something more important to worry about, but since my Primary needed me to be in his deployment zone and so did two of my Secondaries that I'd had since the start, they were the most important thing and I should have thrown more at shifting them early on to open up the map.

Looking forward to building up from here :)

I tried to mix in some mobility into the usual Eldar shenanigans of Seer Council- teleporting around and 18" lone op. Shroudrunners can move shoot move for a CP which I have plenty off. General plan is to stack buffs on enemy targets. delete them. and feather the retaliation.

I think I prefer the Guardian Defenders over Storm Guardians since sticking your home isn't important any more most of the time and the bright lance with the 6 flip of the farseer is really nice. I wanted to try out the D-Cannon just to get some extra damage in the squad. Avatar is there ro protect my stuff. Rangers are just annoying and I thought about dropping an enhancement to ttn one unit into Corsairs for OC or Scorpions for the scout move. Yriel would be so nice in the list with redeploy.

The Farseer Skyrunner are incredible for Enemy Overwatch since they can give -1 to wound.

It's meant for tournament play

What do you guys think?

40k List New to comp trying to build a solid blood angels list

I wanted to go with a heavy hitting LAG list my idea was to
send my two death company units to fight whatever it could get close enough to
keep my intercessors on Home objective
my two small units of jump pack intercessors would go sit on objectives
gladiator lancers would sit in the back and shoot at enemy tanks
and then I was planning on deep striking terminators in on an objective to hold it or contest an objective that has been taken
deep strike my inceptors to shoot at an enemy unit that needs to be taken care of
Deep strike sanguinary guard to drop on and attack enemy units
I’m worried if that’s too much to be put in deep strike or if I just have too much things that are meant to kill and not enough that are meant to sit on an objective so my ultimate question is what is good about this list and what could change

40k List Ravenguard Army List Advice for a Newbie

This is my army list for my 2nd ever game.
I’m playing 11e with my friend and I got kinda destroyed in the first game.

I had a lot of trouble with my positioning, had almost no way to kill vehicles, and remembering abilities and stratagems in my first game.

I would love any advice for list building or strategies to use with this army, or pieces I’m missing out on.

The idea is to push forward with my Infiltrators to screen out deep strike, infiltrate close to objectives for early obj control.

My Intercessors will be my battle line establishing lanes of fire and pressure to allow me to move my melee units up.

My Assault Intercessors and JPI Asault will either support my battle line so they can heroic intervene or charge after everyone shoots. And with 2 OC the JPI should help to control objectives.

My eradicatord give me some good anti tank.
My rievers have grav shires to deep strike and contest objectives and enemy OC.

My Eliminators will Target leaders and shoot in scoot from the back line.

My inceptors are a good firing unit I can also deep strike with.

I gave my lone VV squad inferno pistols to provide a little extra anti tank.
And I gave Kayvan’s 10man VV squad Storm Shields for the InvSv. I plan to Deep Strike with them.

Last I have Aethon Shaan and I plan to keep him on the board so I can Into Darkness or Heroic Intervene.

40k List Need some help with my first 2k list and strategy

Hi I’m playing my first 2k game tomorrow, I’ve played a handful of 1k games so far, and I’m getting increasingly nervous that what I’ve put together is extremely bad and unworkable. I play Ultramarines (painted and thematically built as Emperor’s Spears) and ran Reclamation Force for most of my 1k games, so my plan has been to add the new vengeful host detachment into the mix since I like jump packs.

I’m not sure my leaders are with the right units on and if I’d be better off running something other than the Eradicators (I have a BG LT, Combi Lt, and Incursors ready to go rn)

40k List Preparing for Baby's First Big Tournaments

I'm preparing for an RTT and a GT coming up, looking for some final changes or polishing I can give the list.

Done about 8 test games with it for fine-tuning. 6-2 against a mix of Tau, Necrons, Guard, Orks, and Space Marines.

My general strategy and thoughts after the list.

Armoured Trailblazers and Mercenary Oathband

Take and Hold

Berehk Stornbröw (85 points) + 5x Cthonian Beserks (95 points) w/ Mauls

Einhyr Champion (65 points) w/ Mass hammer & Teleport Crest + 5x Einhyr Hearthguard (130 points) w/ Weavefield crest

Kâhl (65 points) w/ Teleport Crest + 5x Einhyr Hearthguard (130 points) w/ Weavefield crest

Memnyr Strategist (60 points) w/ Etacarn SB9 Targeting Implant + 6x Ironkin Steeljacks with Heavy Volkanite Disintegrators (170 points)

CHARACTERS

Brôkhyr Iron-master (70 points)

Buri Aegnirssen (85 points)

• Warlord

Memnyr Strategist (45 points)

BATTLELINE

Hearthkyn Warriors (90 points) w/ Ion Blasters, Knives, HYLas auto rifle, Rail Rifle

DEDICATED TRANSPORTS

Kapricus Carrier (70 points)

Sagitaur (85 points) w/ HYLas beam cannon

Sagitaur (85 points) w/ MATR autocannon

OTHER DATASHEETS

Brôkhyr Thunderkyn (80 points) w/ Graviton

Brôkhyr Thunderkyn (80 points) w/ Graviton

Hekaton Land Fortress (250 points) w/ Heavy magna-rail cannon

Hernkyn Yaegirs (90 points) w/ Shotguns

Ironkin Steeljacks with Heavy Volkanite Disintegrators (170 points)

General strategy I have is as follows:

Berehk and Breakers in the Autocannon Sagitaur, scout and send them up the board to delay/kill any big target from getting somewhere I don't want it.

Warriors split by Beam Cannon Sagitaur to sticky my home and expansion (as insurance if I ever need to step off of them), and push towards middle or opponents expansion as needed. Otherwise they screen or do the occasional cleanse/plunder.

Buri goes and aura farms in the center, threatening Heroic into other screening units or incoming enemies.

Both Hearthguard squads are in reserves. Kahl’s units to take out heavier infantry or vehicles, Champion to duel any characters or big monsters with the Mass Hammer and impact mortals. Occasionally used defensively to reinforce a flank as needed.

The Steeljacks and unattached Memnyr are slightly special. The memnyr Attached with the enhancement is my major overwatch threat, the un-led 6 are the backup, still heavily threatening, but costly and less overwhelming. I typically put the buffed 6 to go hold my expansion, getting sightlines on any major lane or center objective. The naked 6 and the lone memnyr hold my home. 6 threatening overwatch, and the memnyr tucked in the furthest corner of the footprin to screen out deepstrike. His job is to just stay there all game. Having them separate increases the deepstrike denial range by about 30-40% depending on the map, came in clutch many times.

Iron master sticks around my Hekaton and screen for it with the ecogs, healing every turn and shooting/charging as needed. He's saved it from a Ctan Shard, and 2 Terminator Bricks.

Thunderkyn ride in the Hekaton, until enemy vehicles get close enough to their threat range, then they hop out and shoot. Thunderkyn are our weakest defensive profile of elite units, and I find they evaporate faster than hearthguard or steeljacks when dealing with the same incoming shots, so I keep them in the Hekaton for safety.

You may notice there are no Pioneers. That is because I hate them.

I can never seem to get them to do what they are supposed to with the uppy downy action monkey screening, so I took out the "obligatory" 2x3 and made the second 6-man Steeljacks unit, improved the list a lot.

You may notice there is only one Hekaton. That is because I only have one lol. With the current list I am not sure what I would drop to get a second. Either way, after all my testing, I can confirm I don't like the Conversion Beamer on the Hekaton, Magna rail all the way. Extra 6 inch range and much punchier, and I can almost always guarantee the +1 to hit between our rule and Heavy. Wounding most things on 2s and the rest on 3s is great, especially the devastating wounds.

Carrier and Yaegir package speaks for itself, not worried about that.

So, please! If there is anything you think could make it better, please indulge me.

40k List List building feedback and tips

Hi everyone, returning player from 10th getting back in the action, here is a list I’m currently running. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I grouped as many units as possible in case of a mirror match with purge the foe. I know 2 Infractors have better board presence and action economy, but for purge I think bringing 10 is fine since you only do action on 2 secondaries.

General strategy is to use rhinos with Infractors to get early board presence and maybe snipe some key targets with disembark shenanigans. Tormentors start sticky in home base.

After Round 1 bring rhinos back and tormentors up to contest objectives.

Maulerfiend can be used as a distraction carnifex to put pressure on opponents natural expansion.

Flawless blades will hunt down most high value target and focus on trading their lives for the target.

Fulgrim with infractor support can secure natural expansion

Defiler with 10 Tormentors advance mid field, tormentors bring the OC and Defiler the fire power.

Daemon Prince can deep strike home objective or secure any flanks that need reinforcements.

List:

Dex Srugs and Rock and Roll (1.990 Points)

40k List Bladeguard Maxing

I’d love to take 18 of the coolest Space Marine model out there and am looking for the best way to do it. I’m considering taking 3 squads of 6, with a Bladeguard lieutenant attached to each for those sweet lethals (fall back and charge is a nice bonus). My first thought for detachment choice is Vindication Task Force, attaching a Bladeguard ancient to each of the 3 squads for -1 to wound in addition to gaining the +1 to wound Templar Vow to punch up. I’m also considering Wrath of the Rock for -1 to wound with fewer strings attached plus better stratagem support. What other detachments look good to make this a remotely competitive option? When in doubt Gladius and Ceramite Sentinels are good all rounder detachments, but I wonder if anything would be better to give this list legs.

New to Competitive 40k How to Castle? Basic strategy

I've played a only a few games as admech and I think I need to learn how to castle properly. Each game has resulted in, to varying degrees, MEQs charging into me and crushing me in Melee. Ive been told to castle, but how do I do that when melee units can pile in 3" and control range is 2"? Also I dont think most terrain will protect me if I spread units out too much. What are the basics of this strategy?

40k Discussion General game advice?

To start, I'm not overly competitive and haven't done any big tournaments, I'm just presuming that the competition subreddit would be a bit more informative than other avenues.

What are your guys tips for remembering rules or just tips on how to practice being a better player. I don't think I'm necessarily bad, my win rate is somewhere in the mid 40%. But I find myself losing games over small and easily avoidable mistakes (Ie. Falling back a stormsurge when it could have just shot because it's a vehicle)

These issues start to compile in higher point games, even standard 2k games I start to trip up over myself almost every phase.

Like would cue cards be a good idea to write up or is it a skill issue and I should just keep running it. Any advice would be helpful

Im getting ready for a 3 person teams tournament. Heres the list im thinking of running. My biggest question is running lions vs shield host/ hammer blow. I like the list but feels its better for shield host. I also have 4 witchseekers and more guard i could add in to change the list. The 5 allarus with axes is to help with c'tan /vehicles.

I was thinking to run it mainly as take, but also recon can be an option. The tzangoors and flamers coluld be useful in both options, but maybe if i truly want to play take i should switch the 5 man termis into a 10

40k List what detachment(s) to use for a 36 centurion list?

with them going to legends i want to try out centurionmaxxing, the list is pretty much locked as 3*6 assault centurion and 3*6 centurion devastator are 1950 points and the cheapes warlord is the exacrator at 50 pts.

for detachment gladius task force was a no brainer in 10th because it gives them a lot of mobility, but i think take and hold would be better than priority assets, anvil siege force seems good because if you only move 4 you might as well move 3 and have heavy, but then i don't know what to add.

please help me in this silly idea taken too seriously as i am not a space marine player.

Edit: I missed that the exacrator is a black Templar unit so I only have access to their detachments

40k Discussion Did my opponent straight up lie to me?

Sorry to take up your guys’ time, but I just wanted to make sure I’m not going insane about the OC rules regarding sticky objective units.

To summarize, I was trying out a new army at my LGS, and one of my buddies was playing his orks. Now we were using pre-11th codex rules at the time, so he wasn’t using the new ork rules yet since they weren’t officially released. This is important context for the incident that occurred.

Game starts off pretty normal. The first two turns play out with no incidents. Turn three rolls around, his boyz have walked off of his home objective, making it sticky but leaving it unattended, so I rapid ingress a unit that’s able to touch the edge of the objective and I safely assume that the objective is now mine.

However, once it comes to scoring, my friend just goes “that’s actually still mine”

…huh?

“Yeah, according to RAW the boyz had OC 40 when they made it sticky, so you need 41 OC to take it from me”

Guys…I kid you not…my brain straight up blue-screened like a PC when he explained it to me. So naturally, being the pushover that I am, I just accepted it and then called the game a turn later because it was getting late and he apparently stickied more than half of the objectives and I just wasn’t ever taking them apparently.

Can someone please tell me that I’m not crazy? Sticky objectives don’t work like that, right? I thought it was basically OC zero but still under your control! I know it won’t matter that much once he uses the new rules, but I just needed some clarification from the community first.

New to Competitive 40k Question about kit bashing

I'm new to playing 40k and am building a Salamanders army. I plan on including Bladeguard Veterans in my list. Would it be fine to replace their sword weapons with the power axes that come in the 30k melee weapons upgrade kit? I would assume the rules still treat them as swords?
I don't plan on playing in many tournaments, but I don't want to make these guys unusable for competitive play either. What's the general guideline surrounding kitbashing and weapon conversions like this?
Sorry if this has already been answered in a previous post
