Or you literally found a wooden stick with a cloth on the end that’s meant to be burned for light?

A torch is what a flashlight is called in Britain.

Flashlight sounds weird to us. Different people speak differently in different places.

I (American) remember reading Lion Witch and the Wardrobe for the first time and thinking “wow, the Brits must have been beyond desperate if the kids are using fire torches in this country estate house!” And then getting to the batteries burning out- realized it was a flashlight. I definitely thought it was odd, but it’s still understandable. It’s a stick that’s lit on one end, after all.
