Customer New flair implementation

Hi all, there seems to be some confusion occasionally regarding whether the post is from the perspective of an employee or customer. Required flair has been implemented to reflect this, hopefully it should clear up any confusion.

Thanks to the member of our community who suggested this and please know that I'm open to further feedback.

Employee Calling in whilst on probation

For context I have 2 days left of my 12 week probationary period right and during this time I've had 2 absences. This has never happened to me with my previous job and I'm normally reliable. My 6 week review I was told I was the best new starter they've had in years and shortly after I called in bc I was suffering with heat exhaustion due to my medication dosage changing (sertraline lol) and my body just couldnt cope at all. I felt so severely guilty about it I absolutely HATE calling in sick no matter how bad I feel. In my return to work I had a wellbeing check just so that they're aware of my conditions and my medications and I was told it could be dismissed when I have an absence related to that. Fast forward to last week I called in AGAIN because I was just having a complete total mental breakdown and I could not calm myself down (literally didn't calm down until my shift would've ended) and it's not work related as I really enjoy the job and I only do part time due to my conditions anyway. But now I've had 2 absences and it says I could be dismissed with immediate effect. And not only do I need this job but I genuinely enjoy it and I am reliable and competent and I never usually call in. My last job I was there for 4 years and only called in 3 times the entire time. But this time round I got unlucky. So now I'm just a bit low-key stressed for my next shift and idk what to do lol

Customer Kitchen staff interview. What to know/expect?

I have an interview for a kitchen staff position in 2 days, what are some things I should prepare on? I was told by a friend that works at Wetherspoons that I should look into the pub's history a bit as I'll be asked what I know about the company. Is there anything else I should know?

I have attended a college course for cookery but that's all the experience I have working in a kitchen. Thanks in advance!

Customer Work friendly?

I'm relatively new to Wetherspoons as a whole, but what's the general view around using the earlier opening hours/quiet days to buy a drink and get some document based work done on a small laptop? I'd especially like employees' views if possible. I struggle to work at home so I'm looking for places nearby that're friendly to do it in instead. Thank you!

Customer New menu idea

This came to me in a vision and I felt like I had to share it. Hear me out, guys.

Imagine the seasoning that they put on the spice bags on the spoons chicken wings, with a cheeky mayo dip or something on the side. Dry rub wings kind of vibe.

Am I onto something?

Employee Ale champion advice

So from next week I’m gonna be ales champion, but I hate them and don’t know a lot about them (honestly could be one of the latest items I would advice to the customers).

To get better on sales and to make sure I’m rotating in the right way, what should I do??

We have space for 2 guests
We have 3 main: abbot, doom bar, ghost ship

Employee Team leader?

I've been working at spoons for nearly two years, and am pretty much doing the team leader job without any of the benefits. Is it worth applying for team leader or is the added responsibility not worth it?

Edit: There's only one other kitchen team leader, so the work would be split between the two of us.

Customer Refusing drinks

If I know the table number that my father is sitting on during his birthday, and drinks turn up that he didn't order, what is the likely scenario if he says that he didn't order? I will tell him eventually that it's me ordering, but will the staff take the drinks away? Paddington Wetherspoons, if that helps.

Customer Adding beef patty to order

Well hello there 'Spoons peeps.

Could one of you talk me through the process of adding 2x additional 6oz beef burger patties to an order at the till?

Everytime I order it's like I've asked for the moon on a stick and takes ages.

Customer Manager rude and surly, all day session

I had an all dayer yesterday, went in spoons at around 10am and had a large breakfast and started on the Guinness.

I was meeting some of my pals around midday so I’d had 4 or 5 pints before they came in.

We sat there for a while, the banter was flying, popping in and out of the smoking area as 2 pals are heavy smokers.

Around 2pm we were peckish, I ordered up large fish n chips and pint of Guinness.

3 of the lads went around 6pm, their missus’s were giving them grief so they went leaving just me and my friend Derek.

We stepped it up a bit and had some shots along with our Guinness.

Derek left about 930pm, he didn’t know where he was and staggered out and made his way home.

It was at this stage things became blurry, I had another pint and fell asleep as the next thing I knew was some bloke telling me to wake up, I got annoyed and told him where to go, he said I gotta go as they’re shutting.

i told him to leave me alone, I was comfy and didn’t want to go, just leave me in my seat ffs and lock me in I don’t care.

He started saying some crap about fire alarms or something, I just said piss off out of it

Next thing I know he’s threatening to call the coppers, I tell him it’s nothing to do with the filth, just leave me alone.

Anyway he started shaking me awake, I stood up and said I’m going and I told him to learn customer service

I awoke at 11am this morning, feel like shite lol

Employee Did this happen to anyone else when hiring?

I applied for a kitchen staff role, which was advertised as a 30 hour a week role. It said this on the application on the wetherspoons website.

However, at the induction, me and the 2 others they hired ( they were hiring multiple people for this position) were a bit shocked to sign a contract that said 20 hours on it.

Most weeks, I get between 25-30. For the past few weeks, I've got 27-28 hours, but next week, originally, when the rota was published, I had 27 hours, but it's been cut to 24.

I know that at my pub we've been trying to save hours but I can't be the only one who thinks this is a bit ridiculous, especially considering they advertised the job as 30 hours.

Does anyone else have this problem/issue? As I say, I can't speak for floor/bar staff as I'm in kitchen but I've heard that my pub as a whole has been cutting hours.

Customer Regarding the phone noise ban...

Of course parents are still gonna let their tiny tot blast baby shark for all to hear.

Take that device away from them and they're probably gonna scream even louder.

Also do you really expect minimum wage workers to enforce the rules? I don't think so.

If you want a quiet pint, there's a Sam smith pub down the road.

Employee Bar and Hotel night staff, How do you cope with the demand and self-motivation?

I'll preface that I love the position that i'm in and I would never go back to days unless absolutely necessary but man, it's starting to get tough to stay on.

Since my location is both bar and hotel my responsibilities range from taking hotel payments/printing out reg cards for the next day to completely restocking the back bar, a nightly deep cleaning job and setting up the bar for the next day. I work out front on my own with someone in the kitchen preparing that team for the next day also. Recently, and even before summer these responsibilities have become more and more burdensome and I have started to hit a wall where I'm running out of time to complete all my tasks and come the weekend rotations, I don't have any time to take my break.

It's become enough of a problem that my pub manager has noticed the inadequacies but is trying to think of ways to help me, at least with the physical demand the position is now requiring. Anything that we can come up with relies on the day staff actually putting a little extra effort and despite the 'we're a team' message, it's always felt like a 'them verses us' so what little help I do receive doesn't last very long.

What help, if any, can the day staff give to help out and how can I keep that help ongoing for the foreseeable? What do you do just to keep going through the night?

Customer Ale Selections Not Up To Much

Looking on the Wetherspoons app at ales available I'm seeing what is on at all of the Lanarkshire based pubs and nothing is grabbing my attention or holding my interest to want to visit.

Looking at Glasgow and some of the pubs are doing a pretty good lineup.

One pub that is standing out is The Kirky Puffer but it's CAMRA Dunbartonshire Pub Of The Year and is also separately available on Real Ale Finder App for updates.

I wish my own local saw what The Kirky Puffer does and just replicates the lineup.

Employee I need to change me availability

I am a uni student and I got hired in spoons over summer on an 8 hour contract. In the interview, the guy doing it had said that obviously once uni starts he understands availability will change. I am also working another job alongside this and I do law, so I can only really work 1 day. My GMH is 8, and I was thinking of saying my availability is only Sundays? But I understand this might be an issue.

I’m honestly considering quitting this anyway, by like Halloween so I just want to keep it till then.

Help. (bar associate)

Customer Why have all the daily specials menus been taken away?

The specials are still live. Is it because Wetherspoons thought people are not spending enough so if they don't know about the specials, won't take advantage of them?

Edit: To avoid confusion, I'm referring to the daily 'club' meals, not the occasional 'specials' that are printed and put on the bar / some tables.

Ex-employee Current and ex employees, what are the "Tell Tim's" you have submitted?

I suggested a big map by the bar with a "you are here" symbol and a route to the toilets.

Obviously it was ignored so I'm curious what others have been ignored.

If you haven't worked for spoons and are reading this, what would you suggest?
