Im 26F a SAHM,married to my husband and we have a 14-month-old baby.
A few weeks ago I had some time to myself and went out shopping while my husband stayed home with our 14-month-old.
When I got home, I entered through the back of the house and tried to surprise my husband. Our baby was in the stroller, and my husband was moving the stroller back and forth when I scared him.
He reacted completely on instinct and punched me.
It was an accident. He didn't know it was me, didn't have time to process what was happening, and reacted instinctively. I ended up with a bruise, so we went to the ER and got everything checked. Thankfully everything was fine.
My husband is not abusive. We have a loving and healthy marriage, and he is genuinely the love of my life. This was a one-time accident, and there has never been physical abuse in our relationship.
When my mom saw the bruise, I explained exactly what happened.
The thing is, my mom 100% believes that my husband physically abused me and that I’m making up the story about it being an accident to protect him.
And honestly, I can understand why she thinks that.
If your daughter has a bruise and tells you that her husband punched her, I can understand a mother thinking the worst. She loves me, and I understand why she would believe that something terrible was happening behind closed doors.
I’m not angry at her for believing I was abused.
What hurt me was what she said afterward.
She told me that these kinds of things happen in marriage, that my husband is a good person and a good husband, and that I was doing the right thing by covering it up and not making a big deal about it.
She basically told me that I was doing the right thing by protecting my husband and not making him look like a bad person.
That really shocked me.
If she genuinely believes that my husband physically abused me, why would she tell me that this is something that “happens in marriage” and that I should cover it up and not make a big deal about it?
I would have understood if she had told me, “If he is hurting you, you need to leave him. You don’t deserve that, and I’ll be here for you no matter what.”
Even if she was completely wrong about what happened, I would understand that reaction. She would be trying to protect me.
Instead, she normalized what she believed was physical abuse and encouraged me to protect my husband from being seen as a bad person.
That is what has really hurt me.
I’m not upset that my mom worried about me. I’m not upset that she assumed the worst. I can completely understand both of those things.
I’m upset that in the situation she believes is happening, she thinks I should accept it, cover it up, and not make a big deal about my husband supposedly physically hurting me because “these things happen in marriage.”
My husband and I are completely fine. We dealt with the accident, and there is no abuse happening in our marriage.
But what my mom said has made me seriously rethink our relationship, and I’m considering cutting her off because of it.
