Looked really interesting, so wanted to learn more about it. It is completely opaque when held to a light.

I tried to test hardness and I think that I not only scratched it with stainless steel but also put a small fracture. In the last pic, the arrow is where I scratched and the fracture is underlined.

I thought it looked special. It looks very unremarkable when dry, but it caught my eye when it was in the water. It's heavy and rough to the touch. What is it?

I was one of those kids with pockets so full of rocks that I had to wear a belt every day to keep my pants from falling down. I had a pretty sizable collection for several years, but sadly, most of them have been rehomed or returned to nature. The ones pictured are some that I still have and are a few of my favorites.

I would love to give a geographical location, but I can't remember exactly where I picked them up. We moved around a lot, but we lived primarily in central and eastern Washington, southeastern Idaho, and northern and southern Arizona. We also spent some time on the Oregon coast and I remember gathering lots of rocks there. Hopefully those places will help you narrow down what they are, but I understand if it's just too large an area to narrow anything down.

For each rock, there are pictures of them dry and wet and for #2-#4, I have pictures of them in front of a light. I don't have a flashlight, but I figured the desk lamp would work alright. No light shone through for #1, so that picture isn't included. Also for #1, the water didn't seem to sit on its surface in the same way that it did for the others. You might be able to tell from the pictures.

I tried scratching all of them with a safety pin. Nothing happened with #1. #3 and #4 both had small indents, but only after pressing hard. #2 was by far the easiest and seemed to crumble a bit when scratched.

I tried to use them to scratch glass and both #1 and #4 were able to make any marks.

Just found in a rock pile in our driveway so I don't know exactly where it came from but I assume most likely somewhere in Marquette county. It scratches glass, feels pretty dense and heavy but seems like there's tiny air pockets throughout. Mainly wondering about the shiny green part but also curious about the red bits

Rock has been there for many years untouched, mybe 25-30 years. Can i move it? Should i use gloves? Am i already cooked cuz i slept by it for a month?

found in SW wisconsin, if you squeezed it it would crumble, found multiple deposits in a river

Found among school yard gravel by my son who's very interested in rocks and minerals.

I’m a causal learner of Geology. My guess is that this is Santa Monica Slate with igneous magma intrusions (plutonism?).

I’m pretty sure it’s quartz but I’ve never been good at identifying rocks, brownish semi transparent, NT Australia, also pretty sure the other stuff on the nugget is ironstone, please let me know if am wrong

Is it possible that’s its petrified wood? Looks kind of similar to some of the petrified wood I’ve found down in southern Utah. Also what’s the blue colored stuff? Blue lace agate possibly?

We cannot find the dike as the hillside is completely weathered but anyway….

We also opened up a visible dyke about a half mile away that revealed dark red/ brown gemmy elbaite… on our new claim. Tho this one is much much better obviously

Found along the wissahickon creek in southeastern Pennsylvania. This is a specimen of mica schist containing garnets and an unknown black mineral. Any help on identification is greatly appreciated!
