Their catio happens to be underneath a well established nut tree, and one of my 8 cats (Amelia) is obsessed with carrying them inside to play with! She will bring in single nuts, or clusters of under ripened ones. Even as I type this, I hear her knocking another one around on the floor, just like she does every morning ~5am
Maybe someday. But if it's just for you, that's okay too. I don't know you but I know grief, and I know that it's the price we pay for love. It's so, so painful, but it can help to think of it like that and rise to pay that debt proudly, knowing it's so worth it.
You also deserve peace of mind and the privilege and privacy of grieving at your own pace. As someone you made smile many, many times with the footage you (graciously!!) shared over the years, I would personally rank your serenity and mental space to enjoy your housing over more clips of the baby boy before your ready. The beauty of community is that it is selfless in its care. Please continue to do what's best for you. 💖
Exactly. I live in Dallas and I have a neighbor who still wears a mask every day. I know she gets shit for it because even I did during COVID, but fuck it! Our lives are our own.
Oh, I have never given the slightest shit about the anti-maskers. I have never stopped wearing a mask on public transit or certain crowded indoor areas, and I’ve never gotten Covid.
The point is that I was already so isolated that Covid didn’t change anything in that regard.
I wear one to work as a server and get crap about if frequently. I don’t care. I don’t like being sick and just tell people that, when forced into an answer.
Oh my goodness, RainSurname, we haven’t crossed paths in a few months!! I’m so sorry to hear of Harpo’s passing, this is crushing news 💔 May his memory be a blessing, and know he (and you) made so many people happy.
I dread the day I lose my sweet cats, but I have two elderly boys with chronic health conditions that have progressed significantly. Ugh, just typing this has tears streaming down my face. Cats are life changing in the best way, but it makes losing them just that much harder. I’ll keep sweet Harpo in my thoughts every time my squirrel girl brings in her harvests ❤️🩹
That anticipatory grief really sullies your remaining days with them sometimes. Kiss them for me.
Harpo’s 18-year-old brother Groucho has kidney disease and mild dementia, but is still active and enjoying his life, except for when Airport, Passport, and Suitcase push his buttons, at which point they go in my office for a while. They’re getting better about being more respectful.
Yeah, I agree. The silence and the lack of movement was driving my brain crazy when we lost our dear Hermione and Grouyou. I was unconsciously looking for a presence in the house.
Haha, some cats are so much more vocal than others. Dadi is nicknamed Broubrou (pronounced brew-brew) because that's more or less the sound he makes quite often. Brew, brew-brew or Brew-meow.
Harpo didn’t meow once in the first few years of his life, except for one time when I stepped on his tail. That’s why I named him after a comedian who never spoke on screen.
When he finally started chirping a tiny bit, I started positively reinforcing him for it, and later reinforced him for mimicking me. The he ended up speaking in complete sentences.
Which is so funny since Harpo was the "silent" Marx Brother. I am so sorry for your loss. When it's a special cat that really touched us, it's so hard. I will always miss my Erik. I'm so greedy because 19.5 years should have been enough, but it just isn't.
Airport, Passport and Suitcase are still getting used to their new situation. It could be many more months before they're completely at home and may start to vocalize. It can take years.
We have a cat who was fairly silent. Had her from kittenhood. She never made a peep. She broke her leg, and had to be isolated for 8 weeks to heal a fractured tibia and fibula with a piece of steel to fix them.
My husband and I each spent large parts of our day every day of that 8 weeks feeding her kitty gogurts and treats. Giving her out of the cage time. Making sure she had enough water, talking to her, singing her songs.
Now? She walks with a swagger because of her stiff leg, begs for love which she NEVER EVER did before and is chatty as hell. She's like a completely different cat, and she's 8 years old. She was 6 when it all happened, and the last two years have been amazing.
I understand. And it's okay if you never do. I've lost many furry, feathery, and scaley friends over the course of my 39 years, as well, and some hit much, much harder than others.
I don't think I'm ever going to get over any of my losses, and to me that's okay. Life is bitterly harsh but the time we had together was the light of our lives, and I won't forget it.
Aww, our sweet Franco loved bringing in leaves at this basement apartment we lived in. We had a sort of fenced-in alley thing outside our ground-level windows, and she'd go "hunting" for leaves which she would present to us as gifts before tearing them to shreds later on. One day she brought in like 6 leaves in rapid succession, so I piled them up in the middle of the room and she went crazy rolling around and tumbling in them. Oh man how we miss her.
(She would also bring in worms when it would rain, which was still amazing and adorable, but way less awesome depending on where and how she would present them to us. I still remember the sound of her meows the first time she brought in a worm. She dropped it off our bedroom and then came rapidly, almost panickedly meowing to us in the living room. We seriously thought something was wrong, perhaps with our other cat, as she led us to her "gift." Nope! Just a big fat nightcrawler wriggling around on the floor, then she hopped out the window to grab another. Edit: I should mention as well, she never seemed to be killing or really even harming the worms. I'm not a worm doctor or anything, but as far as I could tell every worm she presented us seemed to be no worse for wear and ready to be set back outside. Sweet girl.)
I once joked with my old cat about getting a parrot, and I told him ''an inside crow''. That night he brought a live bat, completely uninjured. The bat was stunned literally, I was stunned figuratively.
True. I once made friends with my neighbors cat. He was a true gangsta brought from the mean streets of Mexico, survived a cat napping, and now enjoyed being fat and lazy in his front yard.
I'd greet him every time I came home from work. One time he left a VERY large dead rat in my parking space. Thanks kitty, badass and pretty gross!
I guess he thought I didn't appreciate it enough because a few days later that was a newer, larger rat there... Missing a head. Kinda wish that cat was a vegan. I've never felt more honored and yet so disgusted at the same time.
A feral cat in my neighbourhood likes to leave me beheaded animals as thanks for occasionally giving her food (my 3 cats are spoiled divas and will sometimes reject perfectly good food so I put it out for the feral cat). She’s a scrawny little thing yet managed to leave a huge headless squirrel not long ago
I was working from home one afternoon and out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a cat carrying a rat that was about the same size as the cat out of my backyard and into the woods. Good kitty!
Yep.. my cat will find bugs and happily bring them alive to my bedroom. She even brought a lizard once.. Luckily I now have another cat that wants to kill and eat the bugs so even if cat 1 brings me a bug cat 2 follows her and eats the bug as soon as she drops it.
Couple of months ago one of my cats caught a mouse in the house and decided to put it right outside the bedroom door and slept by it so I knew he’d done a good job. Not a fun thing to find first thing in the morning!
I’ve decided you’re right, I may as well lean into it! I grabbed whatever was available on my back step and chucked them on the floor. Everyone is having a great time!
She also loves unripe bundles of these nuts too for no particular reason that I see, she just carries them inside. She doesn’t even play with them, just brings the cluster and sets it somewhere we can trip on them lol
My cat used to bring in small blind mole snakes. They used to wrap themselves into a ball shape and she would wack them down the hallway until she got bored. The other one used to bring in millipedes. One of ours used to just bring me live mice for me to catch.
The r/catdistributioncenter had an error at their distribution site, so our home ended up with too many deliveries of sick, elderly, and feral cats without somewhere else to go.
Lol come take them, I grew up around hazelnuts so they seem as basic and common as acorns. There are so many trees and hazelnuts that maintenance just throws them in with the rest of the yard debris 🥲
It's a personal top three favorite of all time. I watched it live, and it blew me away. So unexpected and just hilarious coming off Vince's films and Will Ferrel is impeccable.
EDIT: I reread this and it makes it sound like I saw it at the taping. I just meant I watched it live during broadcast. I am not cool enough to have been to a live taping of SNL.
My Lucifer used to hunt leaves for us and bring them in to us. I woke up with leaves on my pillow more than once. Even in a catio they still find things to hunt
To be fair, I only wanted 3. I just never have the heart to turn away the ones that need help. Thankfully our work paid off, because the nearby feral colony causing most issues was finally all trapped, fixed, and relocated to farm properties or to be adopted by a families!!
Come this Christmas, you're going to be sitting by the fire, cozy and ready for Saint Nick to deliver whatever gifts you have been deemed to receive (have you been good this year?) and a want is going to begin to gnaw at your being.
A want for something you don't quite understand, and cannot remember ever having any of in the first place, and a crack from the burning logs in the hearth is going to make you look over and there, in the warmth and light of the Yule flames, will be your cat.
The cat you have just double-questionmarked asked on Reddit to total strangers about wondering what was wrong with them.
They will be roasting one of the chestnuts they found scrounging around outside and here you will be, without nuts.
No nuts what-so-ever.
And your cat will calmly look over at you... no side eye... no piercing glare from the cinematic light emanating from the fireplace... and you will know.
That cat was thinking of you both.
And you had the nerve to ask on Reddit what was wrong with them.
I’d take that over the live chipmunks that my cat has been bringing in recently. It’s such a fun game trying to get them out from under the oven, ha. A line of nuts to the door doesn’t work btw. Cartoons are all lies.
those look like chestnuts which is impressive bc they come off the bush completely surrounded by a very spikey, hurty cover. We used to collect them in school and we'd open up the seed pod with our feet (sneakers).
Kitty must be employing a helper to protect his paws.
Also: Small, skittery, fun to bat around on concrete, and smells like outdoors and possibly other animals (skwerl!!). Of course kitty is making them an outside toy.
