Custom Firmware Looking for custom firmwares? There is a dedicated directory for that.

Hey everyone.

I constantly see questions popping up on the sub about where to find custom firmwares, which one to choose, or how to get specific features working on your device.

Instead of digging through months of old threads or dead links, I just wanted to remind you that there is a dedicated Firmware Directory over on ReadMe.club.

We actually just crossed a cool milestone: there are currently more than 10 different firmwares listed and categorized.

This includes everything from the latest official stock updates to community favorites (like CrossPoint) and specific niche patches. You get all the release notes, features, and safe download links neatly organized in one place.

If you are a tinkerer and want to browse what's possible with your device, you can check out the full list right here: 👉 https://www.readme.club/firmware

(Also, if you are a dev or just know of a custom firmware/tweak that isn't on the list yet, please feel free to submit it via your account! The goal is to build the most reliable, centralized library for everyone).

Happy tweaking!

Discussion What exactly is ReadMe.club? (A quick tour of our community toolbox)

Hi everyone 👋

With the Xteink community growing so fast lately (and the X3 shipping soon!), I’ve seen a lot of new faces around here. Since I often share links to specific guides or features, I realized I never took the time to properly introduce the project itself.

So, what is ReadMe.club?

In short: It’s a free, community-driven resource hub built to make life easier for Xteink device owners. When I first got my X4, I loved the hardware, but finding optimized resources, clear setup guides, or keeping track of the amazing mods created by this community meant digging through weeks of old Reddit threads or Discord chats.

I built ReadMe.club to be our permanent "bookshelf" and toolbox. The goal isn't to replace Reddit or Discord (this is where the real conversation happens!), but to be a structured archive to support them.

Here is what you can currently find on the site:

  • 📖 "Getting Started" Guides: Step-by-step tutorials for new users (how to set up the device, how to use the new Xteink App, how to transfer files without a PC, etc.).
  • 🎨 The Customization Library: A curated collection of wallpapers and fonts perfectly optimized for the Xteink E-ink screens.
  • 🤝 The Bookshelf: A peer-to-peer request board. If you are looking for a hard-to-find book, you can ask the community. Members can help you track it down via a private, blind-email relay.
  • 🧑‍🔬 The Modding Directory (Soon): A clean, organized list of all the amazing alternative firmwares, apps, and mods built by the tech enthusiasts here, so their hard work doesn't get lost in the feed.

The site also has a few social features (like reading lists and member profiles) so we can see what everyone is currently enjoying.

This project is entirely built out of love for E-ink devices and this specific community. It’s a work in progress, and I’m constantly adding things based on your feedback.

If you haven't checked it out yet, you are more than welcome to join us. And if you have ideas for tools or resources you wish existed for your device, let me know in the comments!

Happy reading! 📚✨

Custom Firmware X3 Pokémon Game — train and collect Pokémon by reading

I just finished a beta Pokemon game for the X3.

Heavily inspired by:

It adds a pokemon companion to your dashboard that gains exp as you read. There's also a pokedex and random encounters so you can try and catch them all. My math estimates about 500 hours of reading to complete the 151 original dex.

This is only X3 for now (I have an X4 with a broken screen and will consider porting it after I fix the screen). This whole project is being beta tested by myself as we speak. Feel free to test and provide feedback. Its provided as is with the untested alpha/beta warning.

Hope you enjoy!

I finally received my X4 Pro!
I ordered it directly through the Xteink website, and it arrived in just under 8 days. Honestly, it’s even cooler than I expected! It feels surprisingly solid and heavy in the hand, and the build quality feels really good.
I flashed it with Crosspoint and Crossink (which, IMO, is the coolest firmware so far). It took me about an hour to figure everything out, and voilà. I was up and running!
The Xteink community is pretty much amazing. There are tons of helpful members, and almost every step is spoon-fed through different guides and posts. Even if you’re completely new to it, there’s plenty of help around.
I’m so excited to finally start reading with it! I’ve only read a couple of pages so far, but I already feel weirdly attached to it. 😂
So far, it feels much more comfortable, exciting, and handy to use compared to my Kindle Paperwhite.
Let the reading begin! 📖

Just got my new favorite thing a few days ago and already I love it forever and never wish to be parted from it! For years already I have primarily been a phone reader and never thought a device like this would be useful to me: my phone is already so portable and goes with me everywhere.

But recently I have been plagued with headaches and eye strain (and doomscrolling reddit too much), so I was desperate for a solution to let me keep reading as much as I wanted--but without a backlight. Enter the X3.

For as little research as I did in advance on the device, once in hand I did a decent amount of browsing for a firmware I wanted. Even being moderatrly un-tech-savvy I managed to install Crossink with no muss or fuss, and even got a bunch of cute custom wallpapers for the sleep screen, too! I couldn't be more pleased.

So yeah, if you're still on the fence about buying one, here's another Happy Customer testimonial for the pile. I showed my X3 to my co-workers (of course, I brought it to work) and they all instantly adored it. If you're a huge daily reader, or just want to become one, I think you'll be shocked at how quickly you find a mini ereader becomes indispensable!

(Now, my only big fear to conquer is putting it down somewhere in my house and not being able to find it, lol. I am so bad about doing that with my phone, negl. My phone at least can be made to buzz!)

Discussion How do these people break their screens?

I mean seriously, do they take no precautions like a protective case or even, heaven forbid, one of those stupid screen protectors? Common sense would dictate that you put at least a minimum amount of protection on your devices before chucking them in a bag or a pocket!

I was looking at a phone case on AliExpress, but then I thought, "Why not 3D print one?"

It looks pretty decent. I tried other colors, but in the end I preferred to make it all black.

Is there a way in crossink to just.... Flip the whole OS? I like using the reader upside down, I made my cover picture upside down. The only thing right side up is the OS lol

Question For people who have owned these for months, how fragile is the X3?

Upvotes

I am aware that it's not going to be bulletproof just to be clear lol I am asking in terms of regular use.

I already own a Kobo Libra Colour and have been eyeing the X3 for a more on-the-go option or for when I am waiting for something in office and can read on instead.

Issue is, I live in a slightly humid place where it rains very often and many times unexpectedly, would it hold up well in such weather? I do plan on buying the silicon case and screen protector etc but still, how durable is it?

Additionally, E-ink displays are rather fragile so if you mostly keep it behind your phone would it not be damaged at some point? Like, any experience if anyone has had?

Discussion Xteink X3/X4 owners: How are they holding up after months of daily use?

I’m curious to hear specifically from people who have owned an Xteink X3 or X4 for a while and use it regularly or daily.
A lot of the Amazon reviews and Reddit posts I’ve found seem to be from people who have just received the device the honey moon phase? . That’s useful for first impressions, but I’m more interested in how these hold up after months of actual use.
If you’ve had yours for a while:
How long have you owned it, and how often do you use it?
Are the buttons still working and feeling solid?
Any cracks, separation, screen issues, or unusual wear?
Any battery or charging problems developing over time?
Have you had anything fail that required repair or replacement?
Overall, does it still feel like a device you expect to last?

I’m particularly interested because Xteink devices are still relatively new and haven’t gone through as many generations of refinement as something like a Kindle. I’ve seen scattered reports of broken buttons, cracks, and other durability issues, but it’s hard to tell whether those are genuinely common problems or just the failures that naturally get posted online.

Thanks for your feedback!

There are two places I can think of where everyone needs a little X3 in their pocket. The DMV is one. The post office is another. I’m sure there are more??

Discussion Received my Xteink X3 today (India), importing my Kindle collection to get started

Post image
44 Upvotes

Just received my Xteink X3 today here in India!

This thing is so cute that I feel like I’m going to spend more time staring at it than actually reading on it .. lol

First thing I noticed though: I wish they had included a few books preloaded. Even a handful of public-domain classics would’ve been nice, just so you can start using it immediately after unboxing.

Anyway, I did a little research and it seems Calibre is what a lot of people use to manage their ebook libraries and move books over to EPUB-compatible devices.

I’m going to try bringing over some of my Kindle collection and see how the whole process goes. Will update here with my experience!

Also, any suggestions for useful software, custom firmware, or places to find really well-formatted ebooks for the X3? Would love to know what everyone here is using.

Edit: I successfully imported all my kindle (amazon purchased books) to xteink :) Followed this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Calibre/comments/1uflds5/reminder_to_download_kindle_books_guide_to_dedrm/

If you're on Mac (Apple Silicon) and running Windows via Parallels, the Kindle Key Finder will throw an error about dependencies, just run these 2 commands on terminal/powershell:

winget install -e --id Microsoft.VCRedist.2015+.x64
winget install -e --id Microsoft.VCRedist.2015+.x86

DIY I MADE A MAGNETIC CASE FOR THE XTEINK X3

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I designed this double-sided magnetic case for the XTEINK X3 to make it attach more securely to my phone.

The two semicircular magnetic rings at the bottom can also connect to a PopSocket or another magnetic phone grip, making the X3 more comfortable and stable to hold while reading.

I’d love to hear what you think about the design!

Discussion Big THANK YOU to XTEINK and Crosspoint/Crossink

Nothing much to say except - it's crazy what an amazing experience this wonderful device and this well thought software can bring at almost the cost of nothing. I was impressed by X4 and read 75% of Atomic Habits on it - I received my X3 yesterday and I finally finished it. I want to say that I barely read any books my whole life, and with this device and software, I finally have an itch for reading. Thank you. SO. much.

I rarely do thank you posts, if ever.

I am already well into reading another book today.

Thank you, all, again, XTEINK, Developers, and this community.

Got the Daisy cover with Light and I love it!

I love the color, I love the fit.

Only a little space on a side, but I think is due to the trasportato and super hot weather, anyway this do not bother me!

Another terribile think: taxes between USA and Italy, 15euros of dogana 😅 this world needs less borders!

Anyway, thank you daisy❤️

Question Search function for x4 pro?

Has any custom firmware come out for the Pro with a search function? Would it even have enough power or memory to support it?
Wondering because I figure the touch screen would help with typing things out. I’m trying to get back into reading with my x4 and I guess my brain is out of practice at retaining some stuff because I sometimes forget things from earlier in the books like which character did what. Maybe this will get better the more I read or maybe I should get a boox.

I am a total nerd, but for this device, I just want to use for reading and not debugging/fixing.
