Is it okay to approach someone you’re attracted to in Sydney?

Hi everyone! I’m new here in Sydneyonly about two months so far. I recently met a guy at my office whom I find really attractive. I don’t know if he’s gay, but he’s very sweet. My gaydar doesn’t always work, especially with straight-acting or bisexual guys 😂
I was wondering: is it okay to tell someone that you think he’s good-looking and ask him out on a date? And, more generally, is it acceptable to approach a stranger in a public place or at a gay pub, flirt a little, and ask them out?
I’m worried that he might think I’m being weird or that it could be considered sexual harassment. Worst-case scenario, what if he’s straight and homophobic?
I’m still getting used to the dating culture here, so I’d really appreciate some advice. How does this generally work in Sydney/Australia? Is the traditional approach like approach someone, flirt a little, and ask them out still okay?
Thanks in advance for your kind advice!

🏳️‍🌈 Looking for LGBTQIA+ men to take part in a study on disordered eating

Hi rainbows :)

We’re looking for LGBTQIA+ men to take part in a research study about disordered eating.

Disordered eating and body image concerns can affect people of all backgrounds, but there’s still very little research focusing specifically on queer and sexually diverse men. As a result, a lot of the support and treatment available isn’t necessarily suitable or inclusive for our community.

The study explores eating behaviours, body image, experiences of discrimination, emotional wellbeing, and other factors associated with disordered eating among queer and sexually diverse men. We’re hoping this research will help inform more inclusive and effective support and treatment in the future :)

Who can take part?

  • Men aged 18 years or older
  • Men currently living in Australia
  • Men of any sexual orientation, including gay, bisexual, queer, heterosexual, and other sexual identities

Participation involves completing an anonymous online questionnaire that takes around 20 minutes.

Take part here: https://federation.syd1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2crBcpQF7xO16OG

Federation University ethics approval: HREC 2026/101

We’d really appreciate your participation, and please feel free to share that link with anyone who might be interested.

Thanks so much! :)

Bisexual experiences deserve to be represented in research. We’d love to hear from you 🩷💜💙

Too often, bisexual experiences are overlooked. That’s why we’re asking for your help. Your voice could help improve mental health supports. Participation is open to all adults (18+) with a marginalized sexual identity (e.g. bisexual, lesbian, gay, queer, pansexual, omnisexual, sexually fluid etc…). We particularly need more bisexual women participants.

Survey: https://csufobjbs.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6sCeGsZJld6774W

By completing our anonymous 10–15 min survey, you’ll be contributing to research that aims to better understand the risk and protective factors for mental health, among adults with a marginalized sexual identity.

We are Psychology Honours Students from Charles Sturt University in Australia. This ethics-approved study (H26115) includes questions about sexuality, self-kindness, belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community, sleep, suicidality, and depressive symptoms.

Ethics approval letter: https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:AP:23e6db21-4592-4881-8472-c98ab36e4b5c

Thank you for helping make bisexual experiences more visible. Please share with others who may be interested.

Mental Health - your voice is important

Thank you Mod for your approval to post this 💖

Hi Everyone,

We are a project team of three undertaking research as part of our studies with an Australian University. The study has been approved by a formal ethics committee to ensure the work is conducted with care, integrity and respect.

Why your voice matters
LGBTQIA+ people, due to experiences with discrimination and prejudice are more likely to experience mental health concerns. You individual experiences can contribute to providing a more accurate, inclusive and globally diverse understanding and lead to improved supports.

What's the topic?
The survey is quite broad and asks questions about yourself, your sexual idnetity, how kind you are to yourself, your sense of belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community and mental health experiences.

How you can help
You can help by taking the survey or sharing it with someone / other communities that might be interested.

It's completely anonymous and takes approx 10-15min.

Have questions 💬

Further details are outlined in the pinned post on my page, and the ethics approval is in my social media links.

Email addresses for you to reach out to the team are in the pinned post or you can respond to this post.

Rant/Vent my mum wants to go to an anti-gay church

i have no issue with religion - i was taken to church and went to youth groups when i was a kid - however my mum says she is wanting to attend a church in my suburb that has publicly stated their opposition to the LGBTQIA+ communities. she knows i’m gay; she accepts my sexuality and is interested in talking about it too.

my issue is that i feel should she choose to attend, it is her basically saying she is supporting their views. how do i know that she may one day turn against me? she is already telling me things like being together in heaven if i go to go to church with her.

like i said earlier, i have no issue in her expressing her right to practice religion, but to attend a church that hates me for something that is none of their business? i honestly don’t know what to do

Need help with thesis on queer slam poetry from Australia

Hello!

I'm a slam poet and art student from Germany who will be visiting Australia in early 2025 to work on my thesis.

My thesis will be about the perspectives of queer slam poets on sociopolitical topics concerning queerness as expressed through their poetry.

To be able to write this thesis I need to find queer slam poets from Australia (either having grown up there or have been living there 10+ years) who'd be willing to share some of their poetry with me and discuss it.

I'll be in the Sydney area from 07.01 - 26.01 and the Melbourne area from 27.01 - 10.02. Meeting people IRL would be neat, but I'd also settle for getting in touch online. Please DM me for more details if you are interested. Also please share this with any queer slam poets you might know.

I'm also looking for slams to participate while in Sydney and Melbourne.

Would love to hear from you all!
