In the US, whether or not tap water is safe to drink depends on where you live. Here in IL, we can consume it, but in places like AZ it’s not recommended.

Cool story - my kid and a very large orchestra toured Europe. When they got to Switzerland one of the adults went on and on about the pure mountain waters and how they were safe to drink. It was summer, it was warm. About half the kids drank from those pure and very alive mountain waters.
Fast forward a day or two. Kids are violently ill, dropping like flies, vomiting out of control. There is a heat wave. Kids are passing out in Venice, being hospitalized. Putting down their horns to vomit mid concert. Apparently the bus trips from concert venue to concert venue were a horror scene.

Ye Gods, there are all kinds of factors that go into this, the first being that if you were raised on tap water I don't care how careful you are, that untreated water absolutely will make you sick. A couple of days in a clear two liter bottle will be pretty safe, as would rainwater. But again, if you're not used to rainwater, it can still have stuff in there your immune system isn't ready for.

I was drinking water right out of waterfalls in Iceland. Filling my bottle from streams. It was absolutely magical. But the US is not Iceland. Even if this place became some sort of ecopunk utopia overnight it still wouldn't solve the parasite problem.

At least boil the water from the stream. Boiling for 10 minutes should take care of anything alive in there. Such water is not safe to drink raw unless you get it directly from the rock.
