News About the recent court decision surrounding certain AI-generated material

Upvotes

Hi everyone! Let me first state that I’d like to hear both perspectives, whether pro or anti, and that I’d like to keep this conversation respectful to both.

That said, I find myself leaning anti due to a number of things I’ve learned about recently (or, at least, become more aware of). Before a few days ago, I was somewhat anti-AI with some mixed opinions, but following a certain post made on the Washington Post, I find myself vehemently against the use of generative AI at the moment.

To be specific, it’s the article discussing a US district court’s decision to protect a person’s right to AI-generated CSAM. I understand that it protects only possession and not acquisition, as well as that it’s in line with existing law, but I find the decision to be profoundly disturbing. Even if the individuals in it aren’t real, for AI to be able to generate such material, there must have been some illegal material involved in the process, and frankly, I still feel very sour about the potential normalization of even fake images of this kind in our culture.

While I don’t necessarily believe generative AI is inherently bad and can be used responsibly, I don’t feel comfortable supporting a technology for which this is a legal precedent in my country. Not to say that one prompt will immediately cause the collapse of the law, but rather, I’m concerned that if it continues to be normalized and spread at the level that it is now before the law can catch up and set new, healthier precedents for it, we could see similar or even more questionable legal decisions be made.

However, I also do want to keep in mind that AI is currently a hot topic and that there can be sensationalism surrounding it, and that I’ve had some trouble finding additional information about this decision. I wanted to know if anybody had more information, as well as your opinions on the matter. While I am against the use of AI at this time based on the harm I believe it to be causing in a number of areas outweighing the benefits, I don’t want to use this purely to put down the technology. At the same time, however, I really don’t want to play around with something as this caliber because I very much value the safety of children and would rather be cautious.

Thank you for reading everything if you did!

Discussion Ai is fucking awful, period.

Upvotes

Now that I got your attention hear me out.

Do I think generating images with a prompt is stealing? No, who's to be offended. I personally don't give a single shit. that's like being mad your YouTube algorithm is giving you videos that you don't like or something.

Do I think that downloading someone's art and asking AI to do something to it is stealing? Yes (without permission but when will an artist ever give permission for that)

Do I think Ai is soulless? For me at least. I strive to draw because I'm proud that I made something cool like that, and I can be proud that I made something that's real to me. Using Ai robs me of this feeling.

Ai art thieves are the scum of the earth and those people you call anti-ai (specifically the ones that say you should pick up a pencil but don't even try at all to motivate you) are aswell. It's just foolish

Yeah yeah I'm not really talking about ai energy or stuff trying to avoid that but... I also hate businesses that utilize ai and let go of their best employees because of it. I feel like I'm eating American mcdonalds whenever I use their product.

So what do you think? It's discussion time I guess.

Discussion Banning Ai Content is a Slippery Slope to Fascism

Upvotes

A lot of people want to make it illegal to have certain AI content on your device. But how will they know if you have that content? They are going to have to monitor and collect data on every photo and video on your phone. That is a huge invasion of privacy and gives corporations and the government more power. 'We must protect our kids' is just a code word for 'We must monitor everyone.'"

It is a dystopian playbook to punish someone for having thoughts about committing a crime. Thoughts shouldn’t be punishable. No one should be punished unless they actually harm a real person.

Discussion Weird AI "order enquiry" spam.

Upvotes

This is a new one on me, I run a small online retail site, twice in 2 days I have receieved what is clearly an AI "order enquiry" type email, neither are actual customers, couldn't stick out more as a (quite poor) LLM. Motive is unclear.

Email 1, from "Sue"

Date: Tue, 01 Sep 2026 08:51:12 +1200 Subject: Payment Methods and Data Security Standards Hi,

I trust you're doing well.

I'm reaching out to ask about your checkout payment choices.

First and foremost, I'd be grateful if you could tell me if I can pay with a credit card?

Moving on, are there any hidden charges I should know about? I want to understand exactly what I'll be charged.

Another important question, how do you protect customer data? Furthermore, do you require CVV verification? Security is really important to me.

Before I finish, what happens if my payment is declined? I just want to make sure I have all the details before I proceed.

Many thanks for clarifying.

Looking forward to hearing back.

Take care.

Email 2 from "Molly"

Date: Wed, 02 Sep 2026 04:16:32 +1200 Subject: My order says delivered but I don't have it

Hello,

I wanted to follow up regarding an order I placed recently.

Could you please tell me when the tracking information should become available? I also wanted to ask how long I have to return the item. There was one more thing I wanted to ask whether I need to be home when the package arrives.

I was wondering how long it usually takes to resolve an order issue. There was also something else I wanted to check the information shown in my order confirmation.

Thanks for taking the time to help me. I appreciate your help and look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks.

The top 4 most common debate tactics Hypists use. (Sequel to “the top 5 things all hypists say.”)

Upvotes

one day, I posted a post named, “the top 5 things all hypists say.” the people in the comments went wild. let’s see what debate tactics they used.

  1. Burden of Proof Fallacy: telling me to figure it out when asked to explain their argument.

  2. Goalpost Shifting: Constantly changing the topic and adding more variables instead of engaging with the argument at hand.

  3. Strawmanning: Exaggerating my points and deconstructing that instead of the point i made.

  4. Bad Faith Debating: Go in circles and when i give up trying to reason with them, they claim that they "destroyed" me.

This is also not a ragebait post. hope that helps.

Discussion Using AI as a part of a fitness regiment; a discussion.

Upvotes

I've been using a Google AI thread to help me plan out my meals, and pick my work outs, for each day, so I can hit my exercise goals.

Lost ten pounds in a month, and have been building significant muscle mass going forward.

Has anyone else done this? Do you support this use of AI? Or do you oppose it?

However the hate directed at individuals and small business owners is pretty unnecessary not everyone has the budget to hire a graphic designer and even if they did they don’t have to. Redirect your anger at the system not other people.

In case you're not familiar with her, she's not just some random: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabine_Hossenfelder

Very interesting to see how mathematicians and physicists differ in their reaction to AI, with the former having the typical anti reaction and the latter being more on the "it's a tool" pro side.

Context: Saw this response on a post from an Ai Service advertising that their Ai has no rules or "limits" in a very sexual manner using A photo of a girl on the subway that's seemingly being preferred by the guy behind her.

Sorry for the repost, image keeps failing to upload.

Discussion As a researcher, I refuse to use Google. Automating the boring parts is cheating

I keep seeing people argue it's fine to let AI handle the "mundane" parts of their workflow. Absolutely not. Automating the boring parts is cheating

That's why I don't use Google. Letting some clanker sift through millions of pages for me? Lazy. Inaccurate. Disrespectful to the craft

Instead, I do research the honest way. I walk to the library, pull the card catalog, and flip through books by hand. Does it take three days instead of three seconds? Yes. But I earned that citation. When I cite a source, I know its Dewey Decimal number personally

People say "but the boring parts have no creative value, they're just time sinks." Exactly. That's the point. If a task is mundane and soul-crushing, that's how you know it's building character. The suffering IS the craft.

My colleagues finish literature reviews in an afternoon with search engines and databases. Sure. And I finish mine in six weeks with a bad back and a library fine. Who's the real researcher?

TLDR; If you use Ctrl+F you're not a scholar, you're a fraud

Discussion DLSS5 - I'm kind of okay with it.

I'm generally an AI skeptic in terms of whom it's a benefit for and vehemently against so-called "generative" AI (check my post history), but to the extent that DLSS5 is used in the pursuit of increased realism, I think it makes sense.

The headlines right now are that it "halves frame rate". Okay. But how much slower would the equivalent result be to generate using pure rasterisation or ray tracing?

I wouldn't call myself an expert any more, but I do have thirty years of experience writing graphics engines, shaders, and so on, and we've been chasing diminishing returns for a while now. This isn't the first time something has halved frame rates (coughcrysiscough), but it IS the first time in at least five years that I've been able to look at two screenshots featuring old vs new technology and been able to see at a glance a very clear difference (with the exception of some well-chosen ray tracing examples).

For clarity: I have absolutely no affection for the creepy, soulless, flawless, AI-generated "characters" flooding social media, and no desire to play games featuring them. But that's not what I'm seeing with the current DLSS5 screenshots. They kinda just look like the character did already, but with much more true-to scene lighting and skin that actually looks and behaves like skin. They look more real. In some cases they just look real.

Is that going to run slower than before? I'd kind of assume so. Is it a bigger visual differential than anything else you could do that would halve frame rate? I think yes, and we're right at the start of figuring out how to get the best from it and building hardware to excel at it.

I think AI is mostly a vengeful spirit conjured by grifters and thieves to devour our pensions. But if it can cure cancer and substantially move the needle on in-game realism, maybe there's a baby somewhere in that there bathwater.

Generally anti ai but…

I am not a fan of AI overall. But I was having an argument with a friend the other day. He and I are both 3d modellers (hobbyists). I often actually prefer to sculpt characters and then retopo them. But retopo is such a mundane part of the process. I think every ai modeller should try it. They should do it at least a few times. But having done it enough, I’d be more than happy to have an AI take over this part of the work flow. But so far, it seems we’re far away from this. Getting good topology from ai is nearly impossible and it takes almost as much time to fix it as to just do the retopo manually.

Anyway, the argument was about whether or not it’s acceptable to outsource the very mundane and mindless parts of a work flow that take a lot of time. I’d welcome it, my friend thinks it’s cheating.

Fellow antis, especially, I want your thoughts on this.

Where does creativity start?

it’s a slow walk. it’s a landmine.

i’ve never felt more creative as i have with AI behind me.

I am a weak baby, not creative, a bastion of icky disease.

Isn’t it nice to espouse my interest?

Did anyone expect me to pay them thousands of dollars?

The years go fast and the days go so slow.

Discussion What if we feed AI with art textbooks instead of drawings?

A bold idea though I’m not certain if anyone has suggested it before. What if we teach AI the theories of colouring, perspectives, lighting, etc? What if we try to mimic the process a human being learning art, to a much larger extent?

I assume that will be very complicated and consuming. But I want to believe humanity will eventually have the conditions to carry out experiments like this.
