Commonly asked questions - check here before making a question post

If you have a question about the Municipality of Anchorage someone else probably had the same or similar question in the past.

Please use the search function to look through the past question posts before making a post or comment. Many helpful users here have already given great in depth responses to many common questions. If you have a specific question after looking over the previous posts, feel free to post your question here in this thread or make a new post.

Low effort posts that clearly haven't looked through past submissions or can be easily answered by a quick internet search may be removed, a good way to avoid that would be to specify in your post that you have already looked over the sticky and searched online.

Below is a list of direct links to some commonly asked questions. However, even if you do not see your question on the list please take a moment to search before posting. When searching or when using one of the links below you can also change the sort function from top to new to see more recent posts.

Please be kind to people, the search function of reddit is far from perfect. Tourism is valuable to our city and at one point all of us were new to the city or had questions about local services and businesses.

We took a community poll on this rule a year after implementation. Here is a link to the poll and the feedback the community gave.

Ballot Measure 2 isn’t just about ranked-choice voting. It also repeals dark-money disclosures.

Most of what I’ve seen about Ballot Measure focuses on another fight over ranked-choice voting. It’s not though, there are 3 changes being proposed. They aren't advertising two of them.

Buried in the measure is a repeal of Alaska’s campaign-finance disclosure rules, including rules for out-of-state money, digital ads, undisclosed donations and the “true source” behind political spending.

Those rules make it harder to hide the original source behind layers of nonprofits and political groups. If the rules are repealed, voters may still see the organization paying for an advertisement without being able to trace who supplied the organization’s money.

I wrote this because that part has been almost completely absent from the public pitch for Measure 2, despite being right there in the official ballot language. You can hate ranked-choice voting if you want. Alaskans should still know they’re being asked to repeal the disclosure laws at the same time. Maybe this isn't the best measure to use in enacting a change to ranked-choice.

Full disclosure: this is my article for Night Desk Socialism. If I’ve misread any part of the proposed law, cite the section. The full measure and state ballot language are linked throughout.

GOP graffiti

Just wanted to say thank you to whoever has been tagging overpasses and fences with the “guardians of p*dophiles” graffiti and thank you to the city employees that have left them up for so long.

With all of the legal relaxing around AI generated child abuse content and the seemingly endless normalization of the Epstein case, I’m happy to see that people aren’t letting it be swept under the rug.

If you believe that a semblance of privacy is more important than being monitored by technology that is fallible, read this article. Also note that Florida DOT has banned ALPR cameras from state highways.

Speak up. The mayor is pushing for this—which means she’ll be a one-time mayor unless changes are made.

Fresh snow on still green Chugach range looks pretty cool and different. Usually we have old packed snow on fresh greenery, or new snow on fall-colored slopes. This is pretty cool, even though I’m not ready for it yet.

“We do not need Californians dictating Alaska."

"We need an Alaskan, and our commitment to our lifestyle, to determine our government. And JKT is just not what we need," English said. That was a reference to leading Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, who's raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from California residents (AND WAS BORN IN SITKA. ALASKA)

DO NOT go to the DeBarr Costco

Half their parking lot is blocked off and is being torn up. One of their sections next to the gas station has one way in and one way out. I also overheard it’ll be like that until Friday

Where is it snowing already by Anchorage?

My nephew is coming to town in a week, his first time in Alaska. Is there snow already on the ground somewhere that I can get to by car in the surrounding area?

Boot polishing/Leather Luster

Hi all,

I have a new pair of black military boots that need polishing/mirror shine. I am horrible at doing the polishing myself and I can’t send them to Leather Luster because they don’t ship here to Alaska.

So I’m wondering if anyone knows of anyone who sells service to shine boots or a business that sells Leather Luster kit? I checked the commissary/exchange out already and no luck.

Thanks in advance!

Difficult Dog Grooming

I have a Husky Golden mix who is very sweet but has been hard to groom. She is not aggressive, but she sits down and tries to turn or get away during grooming. She has an undercoat that knots up and when I try to brush her myself she cries and yelps and pushes me away. Petco kept her for 9 hours and complained that she was hard to work on and charged me a boatload. I’m wondering if there are any grooming places that people know of that can handle difficult and sensitive long haired dogs? Or tips and tricks? Peanut butter or treats for distractions don’t work and doing it solo is nearly impossible. I try my best for maintaining but she yelps so much I’m worried I’m doing something wrong and feel bad hurting her. Any tips or suggestions for locations would be helpful!

Landscaping Recommendations

Hey all,

I am prepping a family member's house for sale, and need to get some landscaping work done. There's a perimeter rock bed that wraps 3/4 of the house, weeds have made their way through the weed barrier. There's also a section where the plastic lawn barrier has lifted and now the grass is moving onto the rocks. Also a few wood mulch beds that would need to be redone as well.

Looking for someone who can remove the rocks, re-do the weed barrier, and re-lay the plastic barrier. Haven't used a landscaping company in town before so unsure of who to call!

Thanks
