System1, Inc. today announced that its MapQuest mapping service has surged to become the No. 1 overall free app in the Apple App Store in both the United States and Canada.

The milestone follows a rapid ascent for the app, driven by users embracing MapQuest’s decision to keep familiar historical names for lakes and gulfs on its maps App usage has increased over 50 times its normal rate and carried the app to the top position of the overall free charts in both countries.

MapQuest remains available for free on iOS and Android.

I got a new Mac today for my gf and all the names are red

Whenever I click on a pinned or favorited address in Apple Maps on my iPhone, it automatically launches directions from my location. And when I cancel out the directions, it unfortunately does not zoom to that pinned location.

I want to disable this as sometimes I just want to look around a location — not go there.

Similarly, I want to open a guide at the same time I’m searching for an address. “I am going to be in this neighborhood, let’s see what I’ve saved.” That doesn’t seem to be possible either.

Am I just missing something?
