Out-of-state gigs. How do you bill travel days and short show days?
Curious what other freelancers are doing for out-of-state corporate AV gigs.
For this recent trip, I’m essentially billing a full day rate for every day I’m committed to the job:
•Travel/fly day, even if the actual flight is only ~4 hours: billing full day
•Breakout setup day that only took ~3 hours: billing full day
•One day I had an A1 general session that was only a ~3-hour morning session: billing full day
My thinking is that when I’m traveling out of state for a client, those dates are committed to that job regardless of whether they use me for 3 hours or 10.
What are your standards?
Do you bill full rate for travel days, half rate, or actual travel time? And do you have a minimum for short setup/show days while traveling?
Also, is there any generally accepted written industry standard for this from the IRS or something like that or is it mostly just whatever terms you establish with the client?

Showfiles always being "corrupted" on onyx software
Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone else is having the same issue with onyx as of late where downloading showfiles and being unable to open them onyx due to them being "corrupted" despite the file itself not being corrupted.
I'm currently using the new update and still having the same issue even when using older versions.
I never had an issue when I first starting using onyx but it's been the past 2 months I've been having this issue so if anyone has any tips please let me know. 🙏🏻

Built a generative audiovisual performance system in Max/MSP + Jitter
youtube.comI’ve just finished my Final Major Project, built around a Max/MSP and Jitter system that connects generative music, visual processing and physical lighting.
The core idea was to move away from visuals simply accompanying finished music and instead build relationships where shared data and events influence multiple parts of the system.
A few examples from the final setup:
- audio analysis from a processed modular signal controls the brightness of a physical smart bulb
- an ARP 2600 LFO is used both for synthesis modulation and as input data inside Max, where it is mapped to lighting behaviour
- visual states and image processing are driven by generative timing and performance events
- MIDI, modular synthesis, video and lighting are all coordinated from the same Max patch
The final performance is about four minutes long. I’d be interested in feedback from people working with generative systems, audiovisual coding or physical outputs, especially on whether the relationships between the different media come across clearly.

¿Qué situaciones debo evitar a toda costa?

Concert venue/theater AV? Where do I start?
Hi all, I work for a non-profit art space that has come into possession of a concert venue/theater and we are increasingly doing more in the way of high resolution sound and video installations at our gallery and I've been tasked with taking up the tech mantle but i have no idea where to start! My specific educational background is entirely unrelated to this sector and I have only worked on some very rudimentary audio projects. I would like to have even a modicum of a starting point in understanding sound mixing, having more freedom with our DiGiCo SD9 board and being able to utilize our performance space and our tech in a much more meaningful capacity that I'm currently able to do. Currently I am in charge of film projections and very light audio work/recording for speaking events but I'm being asked to level up that ability. Any bit helps!!!!

AI Fatigue
Anyone else getting AI fatigue? I was working with a client to develop a pretty interesting solution for their product, and asked for some tech specs. I got back a ridiculous 10 paragraph AI-generated response that conflated lighting concepts with camera concepts, showed a complete lack of understanding of camera specs, video specs, etc., and get an audio spec using language I've never seen before when discussing basics like mics, mixers, amps, speakers, and sends. It would take me longer to deconstruct the email than it would to just shoot out a quote, so that's what I did, and then they sent a response with another long set of questions that don't make sense. I walked it because I just don't have the mental bandwidth to realign their questions with reality. This isn't the first time, and I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing this too.

Recommendations on mobile phone apps to control displays?
Bit of a weird one but my co worker advised me to purchase a small dongle that I can plug into my phone and use as an IR Blaster like we use to have on our phones back in the day. I wound up buying this:
The only problem is, is that the dongle asks you to use some crappy app you have to buy a monthly subscription for or deal with ads. Are there any apps in the Android app store that work as a remote? I'm down for paying for it but I'd appreciate something that's not as fishy and demanding.

Need help getting receiver to display Xbox on my CRT
Not sure if this is the right place to ask but i’m looking for some help.
I’ve got a 1999 Sony STR DE935 receiver, SYLVANIA MODEL 6420FB CRT, and an Original Xbox.
I connected the Xbox’s RCA cables to the receiver’s VIDEO 1 inputs then I ran an RCA cable from the receiver’s VIDEO 1 out to my CRT’s VIDEO 1 in. I’m getting sounds from the receiver’s speakers but i can’t get video to display on the CRT. Anyone know what i’m doing wrong?

Apprenticeship and certifications
Hi I'm interested in being a AV Tech after an experience in college working under the AV Tech office for a theatre. I dropped out of college since the program wasn't really for me and I'm interested in internship/apprenticeship style education or hands-on certifications. I live in Virginia and some of the courses/places I'm looking at right now are CTI, and Sheffield Institute.

Looking for a Spandex Tech Drape for a Pipe-and-Drape Tech Station
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a taut, spandex-style drape to skirt a tech station table. Rather than using a standard fitted table cover, I'd like it to attach to a pipe-and-drape frame with uprights and crossbars to create a clean, professional-looking tech booth.
Has anyone used a product or vendor that works well for this? I'm open to off-the-shelf or custom solutions, including tension-fabric, stretch-spandex, or other draping options that maintain a tight, wrinkle-free appearance.
Any recommendations, photos of your setups, or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
