science/information Is a bird attacking your window/car mirror? Here’s why

There’s been a huge flux of posts about this recently, so here’s a pinned post with information!

Around this time of year, make birds get super territorial. They will attack any rivals they find, including their own reflection.

TO PREVENT THIS: cover up the reflective surface until the bird moves on. Cardboard works pretty well, and anti bird collision window decals should also help.

Edit: I just made a popup that gives a brief summary of this post when someone tries to post about birds hitting reflective surfaces. Hopefully that stops it, because I'm tired of having to explain it 20 times per day lol

A few years ago a peacock casually strolled into my classroom early one morning. He stayed for about 5 minutes and walked out. Hopefully he found his way home. I haven’t seen him since, but I took it as a good omen :)

Today I was walking back home and found this extremely round child (Mimus saturninus, I'm pretty sure) waddling in the middle of the street like there weren't cars whizzing past him every few seconds. I rushed in to get him out and not only did he allow me to approach, he hopped on my hand and displayed feeding behavior like I was his parent coming to feed him.

I took a few pictures because he was just too cute and left him under some bushes on the sidewalk, but then I started wondering. He's obviously a fledgling, and yet he was utterly unfazed by the cars and the being 50x his size approaching and trying to pick him up. I searched around a bit for information on how/when birds develop fear responses to see if this is normal behavior but couldn't find much.

Does anyone know if this is expected or if there's something odd about him?
