Other CANTOTOMANDO PROGRAM

Hello All,
I wanted to post this regarding CANTOTOMANDO program if anyone else was interested since Ive seen other reddit post but they varied in prices and had such a huge range it was very confusing when I was trying to find an exact break down of cost.

All these packages are sold in 6 months set except for the Package 1. But keep in mind everything else is based on 6months

Background I speak Canto and wanted to learn Mandarin so I have the foundation of Cantonese.

What the package includes

Part 1 - Self taught modules. These modules I admit were very well thought out and made. In the decks there would be a women speaking it goes over the same sentence in English, Cantonese and Mandarin and then explain to you how to use/leverage your Cantonese to help you speak Mandarin quickly. After each module you would record yourself saying the sentence/words and then you would get feedback on your recording within 24-48hrs.

Part 2 - 1 on 1 w/teacher 1/2hr a week (I've done 1hr italki classes and I personally feel that 1hr is perfect, because sometimes you're in the thick of the lesson and all of a sudden its been 50 mins, so 30 mins is very short in my opinion)

Part 3 - Custom built courses for your needs (for working professions who needs very specific vocabs/verbiage)

Part 4 - Discord and access to their community

Part 5 and optional - Group calls - 8 calls available every week for 1hr and on average 6-10 students attend.

This price breakdown is as of 08/31/2026

Package 1 - 12 months access to all Parts and you have access to a teacher every day = $25,000 (yes you read that correctly)

Package 2 - 6 months access to all Parts and guarantees you will be conversationally fluent in mandarin in 6months ( IF you attend all classes, if you miss 1 you forfeit the guarantee) = $6,000

Package 3 - 6 months access to all Parts BUT no guarantee within 6 months = $5,000

Package 4 - 6 months No custom built course but access to everything else = $4,000

Package 5 - 6 months ONLY ACCESS TO PART 1. Nothing else = $2750

1 Month Trial - Access to all Parts = $1,000

What is your feedback? Would you pay for these prices to learn Mandarin within 6 months?

Discussion Possible undocumented ongoing sound change in Cantonese I have been hearing.

Cantonese does not have retroflex sounds. Sounds like zh, ch and sh in Mandarin are replaced with alveolar sibilants like z, c and s.

I live in Hong Kong and I have been hearing more and more people using the retroflex sounds. I even heard it on TV news many times.

I tend to hear these retroflex sounds before certain finals more than others and certain retroflex sounds before certain vowels more than others. Here is a list of that.

Zyu(豬)and cyu(處)as zhyu and chyu.

Zou(早)as zhou.

Coi(財)as choi.

If you have also observed this or you are pronouncing like this. Please let me know. If you have other examples please also comment.

Language Question Help translating a lyric from Hair 重新出髮 by 南洋派對 (N.Y.P.D.)

Hi I am trying to transcribe Hair 重新出髮, and I am having trouble with a line. It comes after the chorus at 0:45, right before '喺青山公路 揸一百二十咪唔戴頭盔'. Apologies if this is obvious, I am very white, Australian, and not Cantonese, forgive.

Thanks for any help I appreciate it!

Edit: And the line at 1:35, something about water? swimming?

Discussion We used ChatGPT & Gemini to audit a $128M High Court judgment. The overlap with the plaintiff’s filing is wild.*

Can LLMs be used to detect "judicial copy-pasting"?

Following a major judicial scandal in Hong Kong where a judge was caught copy-pasting >90% of a verdict, researchers used ChatGPT and Gemini to analyze a recent HK$1 Billion High Court commercial case (HCA 938/2022).

Here is what the AI analysis found when comparing the judge's verdict against the Plaintiffs' filings:

🤖 ChatGPT Assessment (Substantive Legal Alignment): Out of 13 core legal arguments submitted by the plaintiff, the court fully accepted 10, partially accepted 1, and rejected only 2 (80.8% core match). On the 5 core transactions involving the alleged fraud: 100% match.

🤖 Gemini Assessment (Structural & Textual Alignment): Coverage of Issues: 95% match Terminology & Concepts: 88% match Continuity of Reasoning: 90% match Depth of Adoption: 93% match Overall Structural Score: 92 / 100

Takeaway: LLMs are becoming insanely good at auditing legal documents for structural overlap and judicial bias/laziness. Do you think AI-driven judicial auditing will become standard practice in corporate litigation?

Other San Francisco Women Against Rape (SFWAR) seeking Cantonese-speaking volunteers in the SF Bay Area

Post image
26 Upvotes

SFWAR is seeking volunteer counselors to answer hotline calls and provide support for survivors of sexualized violence.

They provide a stipend to people who volunteer for their Multi-Lingual Advocates Model (MLAM) program- $25/hour when taking calls in a non-English language. They currently don't have any volunteers who speak Cantonese (mine isn't good enough yet), and they need folks who can help with supporting Cantonese-speaking survivors.

Application is available at https://sfwar.org/get-involved/volunteer-with-sfwar/, or you can email [drt@sfwar.org](mailto:drt@sfwar.org) if you have questions. The next training cycle for volunteers is September 29 - November 7. Trainings are on Zoom Tues/Thurs 6-9 p.m. and Sat 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

I completed the last training cycle and am currently an MLAM counselor (not in Cantonese sadly). I'd be happy to share my experiences if anyone is curious to know more! I do know that native proficiency is preferred, but my experience is that I was encouraged to apply as long as I felt like I could reasonably hold a 15-20 minute conversation over the phone and offer support/provide resources.

steam thread, help wanted

warning: very gruesome horror game, nothing really happens on screen though

i was busy with stuff I actually had to do, this is a pass with text to speech. if you want you can ask other people i was on VC with and verify i went on a spreadsheet and manually voice typed a lot of this.

so 呀—>啊, multiple broken homophones, periods and commas need to be processed. probably not going to do that by hand. that orange juice line is an artifact but i am not gonna post process that by hand.

ID English Cantonese
whatever unique id goes here I can't stand you, 我憎死你,行開啊!
the duplicate of that same exact id get away from me!

will print in the text box as

我憎死你,行開啊

get away from me!

when i said that TCoAaL feels weirdly Cantonese horror-esque, i mean it. like yeah, i finished watching 家和萬事驚 and the ending scene where they go insane to the point of trying to cut up and eat the butcher is there too.

TCoAaL morality also doesn't really feel that far off from what 仙俠 novels which routinely involve eating someone or harvesting some essence to gain magic powers.

i am also spending almost all of my own free time on this. it is a labor of love because the people who need it the most cannot make it and most people who can speak cantonese can't make it either cuz you only learn the spoken form if you work at a linguistics institute with everyone else. you want intermediate learning material using colloquial cantonese? like how people actually talk?

here ya go. be patient please. it takes a lot out of me to make this.

FAQ:

Q: is there anyone helping you with this?

A: ... (some friends, but no volunteers like i requested, even on the sub)

Q: why didn't you use an AI?

A: i used DeepL for the first pass. it mistranslated the lines because they're separated, but they're technically done, just very poorly. as for using Claude, i tried that with openpyxl and doing 100-200 batches with Claude then manually reviewing each 100-200 line .csv before adding particles and putting it into the excel spreadsheet. the claude pass (after 2200 something) is on steam but its not done even with me manually re editing it.

ai doesn't understand 噉 vs 咁, 啦 vs 喇, or when characters are using actual casual slang, euphemisms, proverbs, or are saying english jokes which need to be translated. i just have it flag cells on a spreadsheet and i have to go over it half a dozen times. it also uses mandarin, so if i want to write hide and seek it doesn't do 伏匿匿 and does 捉迷藏 instead

so, not that easy, i'm still editing and staring at the spreadsheet for this one (before you think this is AI magic, here's video proof of me editing the spreadsheet all day, this was taken at the end of my shift so im tired).

Q: why didn't you do undertale

A: have you seen the size of that baby? the dialogue alone is 15,000 words. i went on github and undertale only has a pixel rpg font and doesn't have jyutping.

Q: is it because they...

A: yeah because they talk similarly enough to Cantonese people i can think of a 1:1 and not strain myself to the brink. every insult they use has a cantonese 1:1.

Q: why didn't you translate it from SWC?

A: even the Traditional and Simplified SWC translations are different. it would need an even bigger rewrite than this.

Discussion Life report: Cantonese alive in 中山市

I normally wouldn't do something as passive aggressive as make a post directly to refute another poster. However I felt it so misrepresented this city and got so much visibility that it's in danger of misleading a lot of people.

I've lived in this city for a number of years. I learned Mandarin 1st and then Cantonese.

Cantonese is very much alive in 中山. MOST people here can speak. Statistics about what % of people are 本地人 or from other 粵區 aren't available from what I can search. But in my experience it's nothing like Shenzhen or Zhuhai where the vast majority are transplants. I would guess at least half of residents are local (or have lived here long enough to be considered local). They are speak Cantonese in addition to local dialects (五桂山->客家話, 沙溪->中山閩語). If you go to a shopping mall, you will hear lots of Mandarin spoken. This could be non-Cantonese tourists, residents, or it could be a Cantonese speaker and Mandarin speaker together. Mandarin is the default language. But all you have to do to switch it is say one sentence in Cantonese. MOST people will understand you. Some may reply in Mandarin. If you go to the older parts of the city (Sekkei or any of the towns) you can speak Cantonese all day. If you spend time in the suburbs (like the part of 沙溪 right next to the river) youll find it's mostly Mandarin transplants.

The vast majority of government workers are local or otherwise Cantonese. I hear Cantonese in government offices and spoken between teachers all the time.

I'm gonna wrap this up (although I can answer questions in the comments). The last thing I'll say is that the future is NOT bright. People born after the year 2000 are increasingly less likely to speak Cantonese, and most Cantonese speaking adults default to Mandarin when addressing children. However in the last few years more people have been trying to 'save' Cantonese, and these efforts even have official blessing in many cases. If you speak Cantonese you must teach it to your kids!

Language Question Gen Alpha slangs in HK

I'm not from HK, but recently lots of videos pop up about various slangs, including "na za la" and a few others in mandarin.

I'm wondering if there are any slangs unique to Gen Alpha which is in Cantonese?

Language Question Shallots (Origins of 乾葱)?

Why is the Cantonese word for shallots 乾葱 when it isn’t dried? In know we can also say 小蔥, but in Cantonese I think 乾葱 is more common.

Anyone know the historical etymology for why 乾?
