META Just a reminder of our rules

Tēnā koutou,

Just a reminder of our rules, specifically our rule against solicitors.

This means no solicitation, no buying and selling. We allow limited promotion of events if there are deals like XXX free tickets up for grabs, but no reselling is permitted. If you have tickets to an event, please resell via official channels or bribe the mods.

Additionally, please note the following:

Quit asking for sex. That said, no trades involving goats, sheep, turnips, or other 'alternate' currencies.

No posts asking for drugs, where to source drugs or cleverly wording your request to avoid the filters. Your "medicinal herb" enquiries aren't as subtle as you think.
Just ask the mods.

No sneaky sponsorship plugs, no affiliate links unless we get our cut.

No reselling of free event tickets, it’s free for a reason.

No hiring hitmen or bounty hunters, legal gray areas make us uncomfortable.

Last but not least, Don't be a dick, don't act like a dick.

Brass thefts now from headstones

This stolen from Avonhead cemetery.
From a young girl, Melissa who was tragically hit and killed by a truck in 1994.
If any scrap metal businesses are caught accepting this, I reckon $100,000 fine should be a starting point.

Golden Homes Christchurch

Here is a warning to potential house builders in Christchurch and a brief rundown on our recent Golden Homes experience:

We really wanted the section, so were tied to building with GH. Big mistake.  Once contract was signed everything went downhill. Bad design, poor advice on narrow corridors, room layouts, etc. Designer didn’t seem interested, went weeks between emails. Colour consult rushed.  Low grade inclusions and package for a top tier price. Took far longer to build than initially stated, costing extra $6k in rent, rates and mortgage.  Appalling comms throughout the build process. No walkthrough needed apparently “we check our own work.” Lowest grade of workmanship, to the point it required a full reclad. Vast amount of paint defects, aluminium joinery so badly dented and scraped it took a repairer 16 hours to fix. Cavity sliders not straight, doors stuck in jambs, brick letterbox put in wrong place, white plastic joinery wrapping sticking out from bricks, wrong taps installed, benches installed upside down, wet areas not sealed, shelves not secured to walls, chips in kitchen cabinets.  Budget doors and windows leak cold air when wind blows. House is freezing.  Defects have taken 16 months to finish via threats of legal action. Has been a life changing nightmare.  I expect to take at least a $100k loss when I liquidate.   Don’t make our mistake, run for the hills.

Hobby stores that do physical gift vouchers?

Hi, I'd like to get a physical gift voucher for my partner for father's day — he's into warhammer and is busy painting his army atm. Wanting a physical voucher for a hobby store that sells paints, etc. Rather than one that's just via email! Thanks

Looking for Tattoo Artist Recommendations! (Specific Style)

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hoping to find an artist in Christchurch, or Canterbury (willing to travel even further for the right person, even to Auckland or Melbourne if need be as I semi-regularly travel to those places).

Looking for an artist who is comfortable with the art style to the image posted. Bonus if they know how to work with stretchy skin as I have a connective tissue disorder that does affect some healing processes as well as how my skin behaves when getting tattooed.

Credits to @riot_paint on instagram for this incredible work! (Not my hand, but I wish it was 😅) Please let me know if you have any recommendations that might fit this! Or any suggestions on where I could post this elsewhere to find someone :)
Thanks in advance!

What is your experience with Power Edge

Hi there

We are comparing power plan with solar buy-back scheme. Came across Power Edge and wonder how your experience with them has been.

They currently have the best rate of buy-back but slightly higher fixed daily cost. But what I like about it is they don’t limit the export.

TIA

Lukewarm take: People should be fined hard for parking in Public Transport Lanes

This morning I took the bus into CBD, as I do cause I don't drive, and as we were heading in we were going down the bus lane which makes things cruisy till we hit cars parked in the bus lane, this was 8:30am and for those that don't know our bus lanes are 7-9am and 3-6pm. Now we have to sit and wait for someone kind enough to let the bus in. From that parked car, about every 10 or so meters another car was parked. I would like to assume these were cars from the surrounding residents.

This seems to be a lukewarm take as I've mentioned it to a couple friends before, they have also taken public transport but more of a "every now and then", its not their primary transport, and have all agreed that there needs to be at least something done about vehicles parking in bus lanes as we all basically said "its like deciding to park your car in the middle of the street, you are blocking off a lane of traffic". Some joked around about how they need the trains cowcatcher to roll the vehicles onto the footpath, however I think there needs to be some serious fines, first time a warning, second time on wards slam them with the fines and tow them away, as you are just blocking a lane of traffic.

What are your thoughts on something like this? Im thinking of at least the two following:

  • First Time Warning, Serious fines and towing from the Second offense on wards
    • This will allow for a grace period of 10-15min for those parking pre "activation" of the bus lane
    • Households that are on bus lanes should be reminded about the bus lanes and making sure that they dont park there - more aimed at the 7am start
    • Fines will work as three fold:
      • One would be to pay the Tow company
      • Second would be reinvestment into Public Transport, where I hope a large chunk of the money would end up
      • Third would be road maintenance and other roading funds
  • A Traffic Light Indicator System
    • Something like Cats-eyes with LEDs in them or tighter interval of Bus Lane Hour signs with an LED strip on the edge
    • Simple Clock to know when its 7-9am, 3-6pm.
      • Red to indicate no parking
      • Orange to indicate grace period/warning its about to turn to no parking
      • Green to indicate parking

As for the fines it can be handled a number of ways but the two that I have been thinking about are:

Note: $150 was just a random number I picked to make math easier and to be "up there" on fines

Offense # Linear (+$150) Exponential (x2)
1 Free Free
2 $150 $150
3 $300 $300
4 $450 $600
5 $600 $1200
6 $750 $2400

Fines would, naturally, be depending on how the council wants to handle it.

How much should you typically save to move into a rental the rentals we are looking at are $550 and we have a cat so we will need to save for that to. Anyone been in a similar boat and knew how much it costs roughly?
