MOD POST Carf Darko's Chiptune Challenge #3

[EXTENDED BY ONE WEEK! FINAL DAY IS NOW: 6TH OF SEPTEMBER!]

It's that time of the month again, time to challenge you all for a new game!

And what a challenge it is gonna be!

While outside the sun is trying it's best to burn everything in it's way I am sending you to the studio and be inspired by this little fellow!

It's time to burn!

The rules (please read them carefully as there has been some updates!):

  1. Three weeks for the contest (21 days) to write a original piece, I am on a holiday and don't have time to finish this one in the usual 14 day setup.
  2. Only original uploads written for this contest: this contest is NOT to promote older work.
  3. No AI, when in doubt I will ask you to provide proof of your work.
  4. Your submission has to be chiptune but like before that is vaguely defined, I don't mind what you use and how you use it*, as long as it makes me want to dust off that good ol' classic system because your epic music is giving me an urge to kill something pixelated!!
  5. Only one submission per artist name.
  6. Stick to the contest prompt, make it feel like your song truly is bringing the heat!

Now go and be awesome!

This month fun fact: all those beautiful lights in the sky are as hot, if not hotter than our sun! Let this be your inspiration!

I expect nothing but awesomeness!

-Carf!

Drop your track here to participate to this month challenge :)

I became a music transcriber during the pandemic; I watched a ton of videos on music theory, harmony, instruments, and much more. I used to figure out songs by ear, but one day I wanted to know how to write them down, so I started by transcribing bass and guitar lines, then added drums and more instruments, eventually recreating the entire piece.

when making my track “Liminal Space Interlude” for my M8 album Bad Vices, i aimed to recreate/nod to that classic eurodance sound. one of the songs i used as a reference was “Better Off Alone” by Alice Deejay. i played my track for a few friends and they said it reminded them of Better Off Alone, which made me very happy! but it also gave me the idea to try and mash them together. so, i took her vocals and put them over my track. it’s not an official remix at the moment but who knows what the future holds :) my original track is on all streaming platforms under my name amateurLSDJ, as well as my Bandcamp.

MUSIC Pixel Dungeon Theme (8 Bit Cover)

(I wrote a whole description and Reddit nuked it... sigh... here's the jist...)

I had writers block so decided to remake the main theme to the roguelike game Pixel Dungeon/Shattered Pixel Dungeon in 8 bit NES style. Made in Furnace with mix tweaks and mastering in Cubasis (iPad). 2A03 and VRC6.

I chose to worry less about hardware accuracy and give it a little bit of polish (mainly rebalancing the triangle which was way too loud and raising the noise which I had under mixed... added some parallel compression, limiting, little bit of EQ, and some tasteful stereo space/reverb... I also didn't like the crunchy DPCM samples for this track, so ran them in normal PCM mode for clarity)

Credit to u/CubeCode for the original comp and Lumine Thomas Haaristo for the Shattered rearrangement that I'm more familiar with.

SHOW I'm making a tiny DAW specifically for game jams. Would love some brutally honest feedback

I've been working on Guava DAW, a chiptune DAW made specifically for indie/game-jam developers.

The idea is basically:

You have 48 hours to make a game and need music, but you don't want to spend 20 hours learning FL Studio/Ableton/etc.

So I made something much smaller. It already has a Piano roll, Track arranger, 25 synth instruments, ADSR controls & WAV + MP3 export.

It's built with Electron and is currently preparing for an early-September release on itch.io.

I'd genuinely like to know: does this look useful to you, or am I solving a problem nobody has?

What would make you actually want to use something like this?

QUESTION Tutorial for an absolute newb?

I have known about tracker music for a very long time. I used mod files in the 90’s but I have always wanted to produce the music.

I used midi with a keyboard many years ago. Could someone please link me to a tutorial for an absolute beginner to do demoscene and/or tracker parts?

Thanks!

QUESTION How do you approach writing chords in a tracker?

I want to get into tracker music, but I've been using "traditional" DAWs for years, and one thing that has stopped me from using trackers is the fact that chords are less "readable." On a DAW I can see the position of notes relative to a piano and change an individual note with ease by dragging, but on a tracker, it's all letters and numbers, which isn't as easy to understand to me. This is one of the main things discouraging me from giving trackers a try, along with not knowing how to make things that sound cool and memorizing hexadecimal for things like changing volume. I know I could just stick to the thing I'm more used to, but I've been wanting to learn trackers, and if I did I'd be able to participate in Battle of the Bits more often.
