Real talk, right wingers are such knee-jerk contrarians that we could probably get rid of quite a few just by having prominent progressives and moderates release PSAs on no-brainer topics and letting their instinctive opposition trick them into earning Darwin Awards. Can you imagine the impact of a video of Barack Obama warning about the dangers of operating a chainsaw while drunk?
38
u/ShinkenBrown 23h ago
Unironically I think this is a good idea.
Anyone dumb enough to fall for it deserves it. Anyone who sees through it and doesn't kneejerk react opposite to whatever the Democrat says is unknowingly innoculating themselves against that automatic reaction and opening up the capacity to actually listen. Win-win.
And if anyone calls them out on it they can rightly point out that such a strategy would only work on the suicidally insane and ask if they are openly acknowledging that Republicans would literally die to spite a Democrat telling them how to stay alive. There is no way to win by trying to call that out, it would just make them look deranged. Even if it was obvious they were right it would highlight that it only works because they're deranged.

Counter point, if you're going to use reverse psychology on the morons maybe the 'liberals' should just start agreeing with MAGA verbally, rather than killing them off we could instead use their votes lol.
ironically that is probably how Putin managed to sway many people into voting for trump, by publicly advocating against him during the elections while actually secretly (but not very secretly) funding trump.

It’s terrifying how people will literally cheer for poisoning our own food supply just to "own" the other side. Pure brainrot.
Its an extension of conservative, and libertarian thinking where they want to get rid of everything they do not understand alongside things that communally also benefit those they hate.
So, roads are great, but the taxes that pay for them are theft because other people they dislike also benefit from their use. Regulations are bad because they do not understand their necessity, or otherwise feel personally inconvenienced by them while not understanding how they too are protected alongside everyone else when they are present and enforced.
So, to these people taxes are theft, government programs are bad, but they are also first in line to cry about why government failed to protect them from something... usually immediately turning around to complain about how "government doesn't work" and to the first items in this loop and sabotaging something else everyone needs.
Just about always there is also some poorly abstracted bigotry attached to it all which comes in play with "owning the libs" etc.

u/PM_Me_Your_Kinks369 23h ago
That's a long way to say "they're abject morons and deplorable".
8
u/Otherwise_Spirit1552 23h ago
Well, yes, but it is also often important to define what things lie behind other things.
Like the way they use language in general... its all about slogans, and slurs that drive emotional responses be that for their own, or as a response to them by others. Its a reflection of how most maga have poor emotional regulations, poor impulse control, lack critical thinking skills, and are more often than not driven forward by hate, fear, and anger.
Such definition helps to understand why they are the way they are, why they do what they do, and at times helps to identify the appropriate responses to their nonsense when civil discourse has no effect, and can not be engaged in due to their malignant ignorance.
7
u/PM_Me_Your_Kinks369 23h ago
I totally agree and fleshed out that's all correct. It's just that they're still fucking morons and you don't reason with morons. They don't care about emotional appeals to be GOOD. Literally only hatred and fear get through.
If they cared about emotional appeals to be good they would care about the same shit Progressives do (universal healthcare, police reform, political reforms to better represent citizens, etc).

I hate the term "forever chemical", it is not very descriptive and it's primary purpose is the negative connotation. Generally speaking the term is meant to be used to refer to PFAS, but some media has taken to using it to describe literally anything that contains fluorine in it (like this, it is not a PFAS). It may be toxic for other reasons, I am not sure, but it does not break down into smaller fluorinated alkyl chains and it can be removed from soil/groundwater much more easily. It does not have similar physical properties to PFAS compounds, it is very much it's own thing that just happens to have fluorine at a few sites.
Here is the molecule, for those interested. I would be much more concerned with everything else it has going on than the fact it has a couple fluorine atoms in it. Those are relatively stable and not going anywhere.
Again, I am not saying it isn't toxic. As a pesticide it probably is. I am just saying this doesn't belong lumped in with PFAS, and calling it a "forever chemical" just obfuscates it further.
12
u/LionelDelPhap 22h ago edited 22h ago
Yeah agreed, that had me scratching my head as well. Granted I don't really know anything about persistence of trifludimoxazin in the environment, bioaccumulation, etc., but "forever chemicals" is understood to refer to PFAS which this is not.
Edit: Nope I'm wrong, since it depends on the definition of the agency/regulator. It meets the definition of a PFAS.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Allegorist 18h ago
It is very much not an alkyl compound. If it technically is in any regulatory sense, it is in the same way that pizza is classified as a vegetable.

Why exactly does the US insist on using toxic cancer causing pesticides when it makes ever other nation ban their food and causes massive health issues domestically?
I don't understand the incentive. Why not just use generally safe and widely accepted chemicals to prevent these major issues?

34
u/darkenspirit 1d ago
The USDA’s Meaningless Organic Label | Cato Institute
Does Organic Mean Pesticide Free - Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides
"One prevalent myth is that organic agriculture does not employ pesticides and other “synthetic substances.” Organic farming does use insecticides and fungicides to prevent predation of its crops. Dozens of “synthetic substances” are allowed under U.S. organic rules and commonly used in the growing and processing of organic crops.7 They include nicotine sulfate, which is highly toxic to warm-blooded animals, and extremely toxic copper sulfate."

6
u/captstraggs 22h ago
In order to be organic complaint, farms are required to have a buffer zone between conventional farms. So while there’s always a risk, farms are required to reduce the risk. Farms are also inspected annually to ensure they’re staying compliant with organic regulations
→ More replies (1)4
u/one_two_o 12h ago
Farms *were inspected annually.
Anything that relies on government inspection needs to be looked at by independent agencies at this point. The federal government has shown that there's no lows it won't stoop to. If they decide they're gonna gut the departments that keep our food safe, where are our tax dollars going? That's where our tax dollars SHOULD be going.
Donald trump cares about giving ICE a bigger operating budget than the marines, not about keeping America's food supply as safe as possible. Donald trump cares more about bombing Iran (for isreal), than he cares about the farmers who vote for him.

u/mysteriousears 1d ago

u/relianceschool 17h ago
Well, definitely safer than Trifludimoxazin:
Trifludimoxazin is a likely human carcinogen that belongs to a family of weedkillers that also causes reproductive harm, birth defects and neurological deficits in animal studies.
The EPA acknowledges that trifludimoxazin causes thyroid tumors in rodent studies but did not assess the cancer risk to farmworkers who use the pesticide or to people exposed to trifludimoxazin-contaminated food or water.
Spray drift is likely to result in widespread harm to native plants and crops grown for food. Trifludimoxazin is 10 times more toxic to plants than dicamba, the herbicide whose rampant drift and runoff has caused unprecedented damage across many millions of acres of crops since 2017. (Source)

I have experience working in the food testing industry and organic (in this case) isn't all it's cracked up to be. A lot of "natural" pesticides are found in nature, but the pesticides that get used on crops are synthesized from petrochemicals. Often times on organic crops the farmers need to drench the field in organic pesticide because they don't work as well as regular pesticides.

Trump and the EPA also recently reversed course on PFAS limits in human biosolids which are applied to our farm fields. Basically, anything you flush down the drain ends up in our biosolids if they aren't filtered or treated beforehand. Once applied to our farm fields they readily uptaken by plants and a good portion of it runs off into our streams. It's a big reason as to why our farm fields and streams are chocked full of PFAS.

7
u/Ivanow 1d ago edited 1d ago
No. You are reading the database wrong. To be honest, that site itself has a logic error, because it lists all member countries, unless they explicitly ban it, while this substance is banned on EU-level (see line "EC Regulation 1107/2009 status: Not approved"), so there's no need to ban it on individual country level.
→ More replies (1)2
u/WergleTheProud 23h ago
While the risk assessment in the database appears lower than what is stated in this clickbait, it has not been approved for use in the EU in any country.
If a chemical is approved it would have to be first approved by the EU as per EC Regulation 1107/2009. It would then be approved by individual states. Here is an example of a chemical that has been approved for use: https://sitem.herts.ac.uk/aeru/ppdb/en/Reports/3342.htm

I can see you being skeptical for a government agency like the USDA following standards. Even though I don't think the top-down corruption means that accreditors and inspectors at the bottom will stop doing their jobs.
But there are also other non-government non-profit organizations that certify food products as organic or non-gmo
Take a non-profit group like the "The Non-GMO Project" whose labels you have probably seen on food products. I have no reason to think they would be letting their standards slip, so can always look for those certifications as well if you don't trust the USDA

According to The Hill The Trump administration has approved three new pesticides that may be considered “forever chemicals” under an international definition, though the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is disputing the characterization.
The article further expands on the definitions and justifications for using these chemicals that were defined by the previous administration.
“It was the Biden EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics that, after a comprehensive public rulemaking process in 2023, officially defined PFAS as chemicals containing two or more fluorinated carbons,”. It also states regarding the approved chemicals: "That exclusion of single-fluorinated-carbon compounds was deliberate, grounded in extensive scientific evidence and public input showing that molecules with only one fluorinated carbon lack the persistence and bioaccumulation properties that all PFAS exhibit,”. Ultimately it goes on to say: “Forever chemicals” is the nickname of a family of chemicals also known as PFAS that can remain in the environment for a very long time instead of breaking down. In addition to their persistence, many PFAS have been linked to health issues including cancer, immune system problems and fertility issues.
So basically the EPA does not consider them forever chemicals because forever chemicals are defined as having "two or more fluorinated carbons" these apparently only contain one.
