What's in a name? [OC]
Google changes the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in Google Maps.

It's weird that I don't see any updates photos or reviews yet.

It would be a little less embarrassing if they changed it only when the location is DC or Mar a Lago
Make diaper Donny happy and leave everyone else out of it

But in the details on the left it says (Lake America) right? Thats what I get in New Zealand.

Because it’s still Lake Ontario. Google’s just trying to avoid shade, which is probably prudent but still annoying AF because it just continues to delude Dementia Don that his executive orders have the authority he thinks they do.

u/hikeit233 7h ago
They base all naming on local government databases to try and maintain neutrality from the gov perspective. US uses GNIS, maintained by the Ececutive Branch.
They don’t have to, but they got rid of the don’t be evil motto.

They are just like "Ahh lets do what this old man wants until he is done." ...

u/randomlemon9192 19h ago
That was faster than renaming the gulf.

First time is always the hardest, which is why it’s so shocking when it happens. Normalization.

I made sure to go leave Google maps a 1 star and tell them they're nothing but bootlickers for bowing to a man/country that's the laughing stock of the rest of the world.

Gulf of MEXICO.
Lake ONTARIO.
The End.

u/solarwindfox 19h ago
We should rename America to North Mexico. Or South Canada.

u/RunsWithPhantoms 18h ago
Man if Canada renamed America to South Canada bro would lose his shit.

u/UnlikelyIntrepid 17h ago
As an American this would be the funniest thing ever. Please do this.

u/Different-Jeweler-75 15h ago
If you really want to piss him off, start calling it the United States of Obama
11
u/TheJackasaur11 16h ago
I second this, please, in the spirit of pure entertainment, Canada must do it
16
u/HamshanksCPS 18h ago
We should rename the US to what it actually is, a gigantic pile of hot garbage

u/TheRealLarkas 10h ago
It’d be interesting if we simply collectively agreed to remove the “of America” from its name. Deny him precisely what he’s “proud” of.

It’s been a year and I still refuse to call it Gulf of America. Same thing with Lake Ontario.

At this rate every body of water is going to be named America.

If everything is named America, at least Americans will finally be able to find America on a map.

People were throwing around the rumor that he had been thinking about renaming the Atlantic and Pacific oceans too.

That which we call a festering turd by any other name would govern just as shittily.

I thought they stopped using that motto years ago. Well if not, they probably should.

Honestly, it was the most stupid motto ever anyhow. Why would you draw so much attention onto the idea of not being evil, unless you were trying to hide the fact that you are indeed quite evil?
3
u/Setisthename 9h ago
"Don't be evil" was marketing gloss from Google's 2004 stock launch, that basically amounted to: 'we won't flood the site with so many ads that it might scare off users and hurt shareholder revenues'. It was never about morality or the public, it was about easing investor concerns due to the search engine market still being competitive at the time.
Now that Alphabet has market dominance in search engines (Google), browsers (Chrome), e-mails (Gmail), video-sharing (YouTube) etc., they no longer have to care about whether being "evil" towards users affects their dividends, so they discarded it.

This shit all gets reverted when he dies right?
7
u/CtrlAltYuri 9h ago
Hmm it depends if people go vote the other way or his followers get the trump dynasty forever (some "conservatives" literally talk about wanting Barron as president and the sister of a senator who died just won the primary to a senate seat just for being his sister I'm not even kidding)

Denali, Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario. He seems rather fixated on trying to remove names derived from indigenous languages.

Google and all the other companies bending the knee should never hear the end of it. They’re welcoming fascism for an easy buck.

Yes it is a problem because corporations have a choice, if a system becomes corrupted you can change it, this is not a difficult concept for Google to grasp.

Lmfao. You have it the wrong way round. Trump is a symptom of the broken system. The idea this is a passing blip is laughable
4
u/NascarFan1896 17h ago
Let him name whatever he wants to his name. At the end of the day, we will still call it what it was known at before he did that shit
2
u/SegaTime 17h ago
On a side note. The way the chump is drawn reminds me of those calvin and hobbes sticker with calvin peeing on something. I'm imagining the chump peeing on america.

Trump should rename every lake, river, mountain, gulf and city in the USA to America, makes it easier to remember for people with dementia.

- Open Google maps
- Search "Lake Ontario"
- When it takes you to the lake, select the Hamburger menu on the top left, by the search box
- Select "Edit the map"
- Select "Your opinions about maps"
- In the new pop-up, select "Report an issue"
- In the dropdown, select "Fix incorrect information on maps"
- In the text box, kindly explain to Google that the lake is named "Lake Ontario", and since the President lacks the authority to unilaterally rename it, labeling it as anything else is incorrect.

u/No-Wonder1139 14h ago
No no, write lake twice. He scratched off lake and wrote lake underneath and struggled with the word and that is hilarious.

Still Ontario on Apple Maps. Just saying. Never liked google in the first place. And about once ever 10-11 months I get reminded why.

u/iamapizza 15h ago
They were first to change the gulf of Mexico to America. Just saying. About once a day I am reminded of the weird corporate worship you guys practice there.

u/OhioIsRed 7h ago
Ah yeah that’s true. Didn’t even pay attention back then. And that one ceo for Apple gave dumpy a weird like trophy thing lol.

u/stdoubtloud 18h ago
You know, Canada could declare that America is now named "South Canada". It would be both a hilarious trolling and a demonstration of how stupid the concept is.

I’m surprised anybody expected different from not just a corporation but one of the corporations that’s pushing AI.

I'm done google. The thing can't understand me when I ask it the weather. Such a great company ...initially.
Now, its forgotten what it stands for. It's going to take a lot of effort...

u/Hilshire_Beef_Firm 19h ago
It’s cool. It’s named after an Italian explorer and Ontario is Iroquois anywho.
If he’d call it lake USA like he should’ve then… naw most people failed basic history. He got y’all.

The acronym for remembering the names of the Great Lakes was H.O.M.E.S. (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior). Now it's S.H.A.M.E.
