I switch between gesundheit and "bless you" just to keep things fresh. But once you get to five or six in a row... you have to add an "do you have hay fever by chance?" in there.

u/Tx200X 4h ago
By sneeze number seven, I’m just asking if they need an exorcist.

u/Ricordis 4h ago
Gesundheit
Nochmal [again]
Jetzt willst du nur Aufmerksamkeit [Now you just want the attention)
Anyway, why do you say Gesundheit? I heard that the first time in a trailer for Gotham City Impostors years ago but since then I wonder why.

I say it because very religious family would shame me for saying "bless you" when they sneezed after learning that I didnt believe in any religion. lol

Nothing wrong with that. On the third sneeze though I say "brown shoe" instead of bless you to see if anyone catches it
I'm aware it's stupid. But it makes me giggle

u/Nobody1297 5h ago
I'll go for a good gesundheit the first time round, then add "times x" for each consecutive sneeze. Like, "gesundheit, times 2, times 3," etc.

u/FlyingJess 5h ago
Does it work like kaioken?
4
u/Nobody1297 5h ago
Just found out what that is- sounds hysterical! And I say it should if the way my dad chooses to sneeze has anything to say about it!

Why do they speak German now?

u/CrazyGnomenclature Tiff & Eve 5h ago
Es ist eine wunderschöne Sprache.
(Jk, Tiff automatically says Gesundheit, and Eve is just teasing her with the reply)

Ah yes THE SNEEZE
Everyone has a friend who has THE SNEEZE. I am that friend. My parents both have THE SNEEZE and so does my sister. You gotta control that or that will be casualties.
Sorry Tiff. That meal looked great

u/Civil-Addendum4071 5h ago
I also have THE SNEEZE. Its machine gun fire has been cause the startled looks from every which way.

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 5h ago
I luckily don't fall into rapid fire SNEEZE but man my SNEEZE can't shatter glass and break foundations. Even when I sleep it's insane

I have the call it THE SNEEZE cause I don't have kids
2
u/wanderingotaku 3h ago
I have it. When I get to sneeze 3 I tell myself to shut up out loud. Usually disrupts sneeze 4. But if sneeze 4 comes it comes with others that I have no hope of controlling.
14
u/hackingfun 5h ago
I also know a guy who, if he sneezes twice, you just know there's going to be a third one, so I'm waiting for it.
13
u/CrazyGnomenclature Tiff & Eve 5h ago
I tend to sneeze in groups of 3. If there's a fourth, that's an uff da

u/CrazyGnomenclature Tiff & Eve 4h ago
Where did you find this and how do I get one?
3
u/Cool_Set4681 4h ago
I have some Norwegian friends and one of them send this once in our friend group chat.
I tried to look it up but I can't find it anywhere to buy. It appears to come from this site:
What is the difference between “Uff da” and “Uffa meg” in Norwegian?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that word spelled out, so I legit had no clue what I was reading.
5
u/JaxxisR 5h ago
It's German for "You sneezed."
Source: Please don't fact check me, I made it up for giggles.

For anyone curious, Guten Gesundheit roughly translates to 'good health' from what I remember.
Guten means 'good' and is implied to be dropped with this expression, so saying Gesundheit is telling the person 'health', essentially wishing them well.
From a quick search this actually isn't the expression used in Germany, it's a New World quirk of borrowed words and expressions, likely tied to various German immigrants and cross cultural evolution of language.

u/Cool_Set4681 4h ago
German person here. You nailed it, we say "Gesundheit" but not "Guten Gesundheit". We do say "Gute Besserung" wich translate to "good recovery".
3
u/TravelerSearcher 4h ago
Thanks for the confirmation! I took two years of German twenty five years ago (yeesh lol) and barely remember much.
But growing up Gesundheit was the common expression for sneezing; my parents used it, much more so father. I think it's partly regional (US Midwest) but my dad's side of the family is descended from German immigrants who came over in, I think, the mid or early 1800s.
There were a lot of German settlers across the US at various points so I chalk it up up the melting pot that is US culture vernacular.

I know what it is, but I’ve only ever heard it spoken. So trying to read it I was very confused for a minute.

u/Muteling 5h ago
I usually sneeze like 7-8 times in a row. People who don't know me think I'm dying lol

u/MosesCoulee 3h ago
My ex would have crazy sneezing fits where she’d sneeze like 10+ times and quickly. I called them “sneezures” because they’d disrupt anything she would be doing…
Such as operating a car. lol

As someone who genrally sneezes upwards of 5 times on the bounce, it’s always funny to hear peoples ‘bless you’ change from polite, to confused, and sometimes to annoyed.

One of my good friends/coworker turned roommate is German. This exact scenario happened with me and hubs. She lit up and said “you speak German?!”
I said nein. :(

u/CrazyGnomenclature Tiff & Eve 1h ago
This happened to me in college! A woman in the dining hall sneezed and I said "Gesundheit" She lit up and asked if I spoke it. I had to break the news I didn't. She seemed rather disappointed

I always feel bad when I see someone get excited thinking they found someone else speaking their mother tongue in a different country.
It’s just like another kind of homesickness. I absolutely understand that kind of excitement and let down.
For me it’s when I find another Nevadan and then they say they’re from Vegas when I’m from up north. lol

In Germany, According to "Knigge" (The etiquette standards), the sneezer has to say "Entschuldigung" and no answer is required. But hardly anyone I know does that.
9
u/PawnOfPaws 5h ago
Glad the Knigge is no longer the baseline of etiquette. Too many inefficient extras in it. Not very German anymore. (Only more or less sarcasm)
5
u/Kokuswolf 5h ago
I learned quite a bit from Knigge 25 years ago. And since then, I've noticed that practically no one knows or uses it anymore. But hey, you can be polite and courteous without a book telling you how.
I mean, oh great, please tell me more.
•
u/KaiToyao 53m ago
The "Knigge" as we know it today was published by his publisher after Knigges death and had nothing to do with the actual work of Knigge himself.
Also part of the rules of fine society is to lift your chair, move back with it and pit it down instead of just pushing it back when standing up. When I was in a Knigge lesson/class in school it was öracticed multiple times and immidiately after was a break and nobody lift the chair up.
And for anyone interested his name was Adolph Franz Friedrich Ludwig Freiherr Knigge.

Eve is getting dangerously close to Dad Sneeze territory. And with so many in a row? Tiff may want to invest in riot gear, or a storm cellar.

If I don't have at least 1 daily sneezing fit of 4-10 sneezes in a row, somethings up. Also a single hiccup.

When someone sneezes more than once I say "Sneeze again for me baby" and it surprises them so much they suck the next sneeze back inside.
Works great 😂

I did accidentally sneeze on my cousin one. It was disgusting and it didn’t ask but the comic reminded me do there you go ☺️

u/FlatHatJack 36m ago
Been there. I'm generally a triple sneezer myself.
However, more often than not, that third sneeze doesn't fire and I'm stuck with the feeling of another sneeze that won't go off for like 5-10 minutes.
•
u/Charmle_H 8m ago
I'm the same way, Eve... Whenever I sneeze, I sneeze like 7-8 times 😭😭 please wait 3s after a sneeze to see if more come before saying anything, PLEASE 🫠
