One of my good friends/coworker turned roommate is German. This exact scenario happened with me and hubs. She lit up and said “you speak German?!”
I said nein. :(

I had to break the news I didn't. It’s just like another kind of homesickness. I absolutely understand that kind of excitement and let down. For me it’s when I find another Nevadan and then they say they’re from Vegas when I’m from up north. lol
