Yo everyone, I have a question.
Lately, I've noticed that many mods like to give GLA airfields and aircraft for players to use. This makes me wonder if you guys are okay with GLA having aircraft, or if you're not okay with it because it disrupts the game's balance.

tbf many mods that give the GLA an airforce make the planes like really weak. In Contra for example the planes can only suicide into the ground or into other planes.

I've always hated it. It's a big reason why I stay away from Generals mods. They all feel the need to have the GLA use an airforce and I just do NOT get it.

Tbf im pretty sure its mostly based off cut content from both base game and expansion

What's not to get? GLA doesn't have aircraft for no real reason, if they can pilot giant ass planes for their own Anthrax Bomb there is no real reason why they can't have crop dusters or sm shit drop off mini toxin bombs

Because the orgs they're based on (Taliban, Al Quaida or however tf u spell it) do not/did not have air forces either. They're exclusively ground-based guerilla insurgents. I don't get the incessant NEED for them to have it.
To me it just feels like adding shit for the sake of adding shit. Big, flashy new toys that don't honor the original gameplay style. But hey, bit explosions. I get that it's a personal preference, but I like things that sharpen and refine vanilla gameplay, not overhaul it. That goes for any game. Again, personal preference.

The Taliban and other real-world groups just didn't have the kind of massive, global arms network the GLA had rolling behind them.
When it comes to cropdusters, though? Totally believable. If you look at the cities the GLA takes over or riots in during the campaigns, those places are packed with local civilian airfields full of small monoplanes and crop-spraying planes. Slapping toxin bombs or spray rigs on them makes total sense, especially since we already see purpose-built stuff like the Toxin Tractor around.
Heck, I remember being disappointed when playing the campaigns for the first time that the civilian planes I put a terrorist in wouldn't fly and bomb the enemy from the air; they just acted like a regular car bomb.
Getting mercenary pilots or crooked Russian Air Force guys to fly airstrikes for them? A bit of a stretch, but honestly still doable. They have old, affiliated cargo planes used to deliver bombs and such, after all.
At the end of the day, rigging up a civilian plane with weapons is really no different from what they're already doing; welding heavy guns onto standard trucks or slapping makeshift armor onto passenger buses. It's classic improvised warfare.
Giving them fighter jets and that, though? Yeah, that's too far. Maybe the GLA Boss General in various mods could have Russian-made bombers as support, but that'd be because a GLA Supreme Leader would have access to things regular generals wouldn't have.

Yeah and the Taliban had rocket buggies and scud launchers /s

A lot of middle eastern militaries had SCUD's specifically (Iraq, Iran) and it was a legitimate concern these weapons would fall into the hands of terrorist organizations like the Taliban.
Whereas in every middle eastern conflict in the last 30 years, air forces from those middle-eastern countries were non-factors.

Realistically, the most important terror attack was done with planes and it should be rather obvious for Dr Trax to put anthrax in a cropduster. So its odd that they are going without.
But fighter planes orvanything that would witstand even the weakestvof anti air is a bit much.

I'm fine with it provided it's optional as a General Power and the aircraft should have minimal armor and damage plus not too many aircraft units to produce.
This is how it works in Rise of the Reds. You are forced to choose spending your limited points to unlock aircraft or better upgrades and unlocking ground units.

Its never really a balance question it's more of a "should they have it or not",i liked the idea of them having old ass planes and balloons personally

I don't care as long as it doesn't break the balance like making it overpowered. Giving them hot air balloons or kamikaze crop dusters are okay if they're not China/US level of advanced technology. Except the Reborn mod where Iraq (Saddam Hussein) is part of GLA and they were trying to make it like the US-Iraq War so I was okay with this GLA sub-faction getting MiGs.

I'm personally fine with it. Most of the GLA aircraft from mods tend to be fast, but fragile, which emphasizes their hit and run doctrine. USA and China already has good AA to counter each other's air superiority, so it's not like GLA is exploiting any other faction's weaknesses in the first place with their air units

Not really because the other two have always had anti-air capabilities to balance each other (and themselves in Skirmish), so adding air to GLA doesn't take advantage of any particular weakness on the other two sides.
