Criterion recently announced that Evangelion was coming to the Channel. The nice surprise is that it was set to include the original English ADV dub, which was missing from the Netflix version of the show as well as the Shout blu-ray, both of which used a new English dub. The ADV dub is currently out of print on disc and unavailable on English streaming platforms. Here's a comparison, from a scene in episode eight.

The series was added to the Channel today and sadly it currently only carries the 2019 tracks, just the same as the other current releases. The original Japanese audio is available as well, and while that's still my preferred version the big selling point of the Channel acquiring the series was to have the ADV restored. Hoping for a case where CC can properly fix this and replace with the dubs that have been advertised.

I have emailed Criterion's Channel support and will update if I receive a response.

anna begins to liberate herself, retreating to a vacant apartment where she creates a monster that acts as a supernatural proxy for her bodily autonomy, violently rejecting the ownership of possessive male partners (her husband and her extramarital affair).

however, the monster is not a clean escape from control. it is born from agony and remains tied to a violent cycle of obsession, eventually evolving into an exact doppelgänger of her estranged husband.

ultimately, the film’s ending is not a warning against women seeking freedom, but a harrowing look at the collateral damage of trying to self-actualize within a society built on the subjugation and containment of women.

Some (mostly) Criterion pickups from a rainy day visit to the Goodwill. All films I’ve seen, except for Fanny & Alexander—excited to take that one in next time I have a quiet night in. Lowkey excited to finally add The Rock to my collection as a childhood favourite.

McCabe and Mrs Miller is next on my list. Knowing it was a big inspiration for David Milch’s writing style in Deadwood, as a superfan, I feel compelled to watch this one. Also have yet to see Bull Durham, but the Mariners awful season has put me off watching a baseball movie. I’m also excited to expand my Kurosawa collection as I watch them for the first time.

Squid and the Whale is a desert island movie for me I think.

I just received my first Criterion Blu-Rays and I couldn’t be more excited!

1. First one I’ll watch HAS to be The Piano Teacher since it’s my favourite movie of all time. I study psychology so make of that what you will hahaha.

2. I had been eyeing The Piano Teacher for quite a while, but decided to buy Pierrot le Fou too since it’s pretty much my comfort film.

4. I’m really looking forward to getting La Piscine and Charade, might pull the trigger sooner than later.

I'm still relatively new to the world of film, especially outside of the US. Lately my focus has been on Japanese cinema, more specifically the 50-60s. I've watched a fair chunk of Kurosawa's filmography and I loved it (Ran, The Hidden Fortress, and Seven Samurai are my favorites), and I was completely enamored with Harakiri after watching it for the first time last night (I plan to watch The Human Condition trilogy on a day I have absolutely nothing going on).

All that to say, Ozu is the only major Japanese filmmaker I haven't seen a single film from, and I'm hoping to watch my first in the next few days. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

His new film, a WW2 drama based on a true story, Pressure, was out in US theaters earlier this year and is hitting UK cinemas next week. It also stars Brandon Fraser, Kerry Condon, Damian Lewis, and Chris Messina.

I got a copy of the Darjeeling Limited, and am having a very strange sound issue. There is sound on the Home Screen, when you turn on commentary there is full sound, and even if you play the movie at 1.5 speed there is normal sound. But as soon as I play just the normal movie, no commentary, no 1.5x speed, all the sound drops out. Is there anything that can be done about this?

I was thinking about how the movies we consider part of the great lexicon of cinema aren't a given and how much availability and restoration effect those discussing

For example , Theo anglepolpous was once considered one of the most important filmmakers in the world he won a palmdor multiple internationally famous actors starred in his movies like Harvey keitel and Marcello mastrioni

But now he feels like an obscure art house darling , he still has his fans but his not Revered like say tarkovsky or Bella Tarr

On the other hand some films that were ignored can re_ enter the Canon decades later

Like soy Cuba or chess of the wind that were discovered and restored by the world cinema foundation ran by Scorsese

Or the works of edward yang, I feel with each passing year his body of work is more and more revered

I'm in my early 20s, so I don't have much frame of reference

But can you guys think of some directors who lost or found appreciation in your lifetime because the availability of their work ?

’Scorpio Rising’ (1963) by Kenneth Anger is considered by some to be the first drama film to feature a rock and roll soundtrack. Anger's use of music was inspired by the experience of seeing people at Coney Island playing music out of their radios.

Very fortunate to have this theatre about 2 miles from my home.

After all, he:

- Portrayed Russia as more spiritually enlightened than other European countries in Mirror, via recitation of a political letter by Pushkin supporting the Russian state.

- Portrayed Italians exclusively negatively in the extended cut of Andrei Rublev, painting them as philistine and uncultured compared to the Russians.

- Portrayed science in a solely negative light in Solaris and Stalker. While often interpreted as a criticism of mere scientism, critical thinking and intellectual rigor are consistently framed as spiritually hollow throughout all his works. I personally think that people downplay how truly anti-science he was, as standard accepted beliefs like evolution seem to contradict his worldview. Tarkovsky didn't see science as something good run amuck, but rather a force that was actively destroying his spiritual beliefs (see Stalker). Thus he was hostile towards it.

- Building on his anti-science, Tarkovsky was broadly anti-intellectual for the same reasons.

- He was anti-capitalist and anti-modernity, and throughout The Sacrifice consistently says the modern world is inherently evil and sinful.

- Believed in rigid gender hierarchies. Explicitly in interviews that "humiliation," "weakness," "submission" (his words) are the true role of women. See Nostalghia for an on-screen depiction of this.

I hoped Criterion would release the movie in 4K.

I don't know, and sort of doubt, that anyone has any information on this, but there's been 4K restorations available for Costa-Gavras' Z for years now. It's been available on the Criterion Channel and HBO Max for years now in high quality (The HBO Max version even includes the Criterion/Janus Films logo fronting it)...

...So what's up with it not getting a release from anyone? Is this a physical media rights issue? I highly doubt this can simply be chalked up to "There isn't a market for it" since a multi-Oscar nominated film like Z would be more highly sought after than many of the films Criterion releases. So what's up with this?

It's one of the greatest films ever made, I'd love to dive into the special features, watch in HDR, etc. I don't want to pay upwards of $60 for the DVD just to dive into the special features. I've been waiting for a while now, but it almost seems like it just isn't happening. Is there any news I'm not aware of in regards to why this is taking so long?
