Morgue
Ok. Xom is … mostly good. They certainly were good to me, aside from all the times they summoned demons to kill me. And the random draining events. And confusing me while in the midst of a big fight. And teleporting me into hordes of nasty monsters which Xom then buffed up to make them even more dangerous.
But they made up for it all by plucking my Gnoll out of Lair 4 and plopping poor confused Toby into a chaotic bazaar where this incredible death stick, the chaotic +8 lance "Wyrmbane" {chaos, slay drac, rPois rF+ rC+ AC+3}, was on sale for 888 gold pieces. It carried the run, killing everything no matter what Xom threw at me, especially once it was fully enchanted to +18.
And to be fair, there were also a number of difficult battles when Xom berzerked me (I wasn’t thrilled about it, but it did enable me to kill everything easily when they did) or summoned OP allies, like a Storm Dragon in the dungeon or about a dozen living Force Lance spells in Lair.
I started with a chaotic spear, which I soon replaced with Jeremiah’s +4 trident of draining. Learned my first spells on D:8 – Fugue of the Fallen, Mephitic Cloud, Ozocubo’s Armour and Clockwork Bee. It wasn’t a bad combination, especially once I rounded it out with airstrike. In fact, used Fugue and Ozocubo’s all the way to the end of the game. It set the standard strategy for the run. Soften things up at range with spells and thrown weapons (usually darts in the early game or boomerangs later), and then mop up with Wyrmbane as the survivors came close.
I wore a +5 Ring Mail with regen until I found the +1 robe of the Nuckelavee {Str+4 Int+3 Archmagi} on Shoals:4, and decided to switch for the extra spell power. With a kite shield, Ozocubo’s, fully enchanted auxiliary armour and good EV, I felt well enough protected, and the ability to cast higher level spells kept most baddies away from me. It also helped to find the Amulet of Vitality in the Desolation of the Salt on Vaults:4. As for spells, Magnavolt and Malign Gateway with Gell’s Gavotte carried me through the late game to Zot. And speaking of Zot, it was pretty tame with just three orbs of fire. Malign Gateway and silver javelins took care of them. The orb run? I didn’t see a single pan lord.
So, in sum. Xom was overall good, especially with that bazaar. But more than that, Xom was FUN. They make the game so spiky, giving you overpowered boons followed by sudden near death experiences.
Chaotic Wyrmbane is the best melee weapon I’ve ever had … aside from chaotic Rift. That was even better. But that guy died, alas. I’d thought I’d put on my artifact medusa talisman with rF+++, but it was the vanilla one, which made meleeing two hell hogs a terrible idea.
Xom thought it was hilarious.
