How to proceed

Should I level EV even though it's -2? Earth magic? Or just proceed to smash my way through everything? It's going nicely so far... Got to Zot 5 once so I barely know what I'm doing.

You are being slowed by your shield, so you should be leveling shield skill to get rid of that attack speed penalty. The difference between 0.9 and 0.7 aps is pretty huge

I would crawl through a mile of broken glass just to get a sniff of that shield.

The first few levels of any skill are extremely cheape, bad apts or not. There is no reason not to train a bit of Dodge in any character.

You need rF much more than 4 more AC.

Melee brute is fine with that build, earth magic is a sideshow unless you’re going into extended or have a burning desire for Passwall for some reason. You probably want some resists before you hit Elf and Depths, rF+ would be good, maybe rCorr or Will+ as well. You can trade some of your +4 AC rings for ones with more resists, same for your plate armor if you find good dragon scales. Eventually you may want to find and enchant a non-holy eveningstar to improve your damage output. If you really want to train magic, you can look to pick up translocations for Apportation and Blink but it will be expensive to get them online.
