Didnt wanna hijack the other Lars Ulrich thread so made my own. Anyways Ive read variations of this saying such as "a bad drummer can make a good band sound bad" and vice versa.

This made me think of A7X and GNR. Both bands are at the point of their careers wherein they have the best drummers they could find, Brooks Wackerman and Isaac Carpenter.

Yet if you look at the band's recent performances, their vocalists are slowly deteriorating and no amount of drumming can hide that.

So this is more focused towards the Australian drummers, but my HSC (high school) music exams are coming up and I need some opinions on the songs I’m doing and whether you guys think they’re band 6 (top mark) worthy. The songs I’m doing are:

Rosanna
Message In A Bottle
Still deciding but likely Lover You Should’ve Come Over

Intermediate drummer here. I spent several months trying to hone my push-pull (or drop-catch) technique for doubles - i.e. first stroke wrist, second stroke fingers. The better I got with it, the more I felt like it was such a valuable technique for what I call "finesse" playing - dynamic, and often soft, drumming at mid-to-high tempos (jazz, funk, fusion, etc.). For anything louder, I still preferred to use my wrist for both strokes, sometimes also with some Moeller as well. This made so much sense to me, and so I assumed it was probably what most drummers did.

Imagine my surprise, then, when I noticed that most of the drummers I see on YT (professional or otherwise) seem to just be using their wrist for both strokes of these faster ghost note doubles. Since I started looking for it, I actually haven't really seen much push-pull use at all with the exception of fast groupings of notes on the ride.

I'm sure it just comes down to comfort and preference, but I'm wondering if anyone else out there has any sort of personal strategy for when they use wrist-only doubles vs. push-pull doubles in their playing: do you just use one technique, or both? And if you use both, when do you use one over the other?

EDIT: To clarify, by wrist-only doubles I meant actually using the wrist for both strokes, not using the wrist for the first stroke and then continuing to "press" down a bit to control the rebound for the second stroke. That feels like a "cheater double" to me and always results in a quieter second stroke. (But by all means, if that's what you do and it works for you, let me know!)

Usually the term "Lars Ulrich" is used for a band member in a big band that isnt too good on their instrument.

This begs the question, who is it?

Nothing fancy, really simple. We wrote this about 3 weeks before our gig. Just wanted to see what people thought. Be honest with critique. Definitely best through headphones.

A few fellow musicians from our “country community” came together for our first jam session. The goal was actually to simply meet each other and see if we could play something together. It was:

We ended up playing 7 songs! “Jolene” wasn’t even on the setlist, we decided to try it on the spot.
I was quite nervous, but it was so much fun and energizing! 🤠🥁

I'm playing my first concert soon (with another band) and I wanted to know how I can look like having fun. Just smile and sing along? The video above is just an example of how I kinda always look when playing

I used to play drums when I was a school boy, but that was 55 years back and I haven't really played since.

It still stayed in my blood all my life and as I move into my retirement years I want to relearn again.

What would be my best course here, what drums (electric / acoustic), which sets, any self-paced courses, and anything else I need to take into consideration ( I got the oxygen at the ready!!) would be of immense help.

What's everyone's favourite snare drum shell? I'm curious to see what everyone likes the most.

Personally, I love aluminum the most. It blends nicely with the rest of a drum kit. I also don't find it too loud compared to other shells types.

Slowly replacing the stock cymbals on my first accoustic kit and I find myself endlessly browsing cymbals and looking up videos. How did you guys generally found out which cymbals worked best for you?

Did you just buy and play (with the risk of some missbuys), went to shops and tried out a ton of cymbals, bought a full set right off the go or, like me, checked a ton of videos and reviews first?

Hiya, I was big into drums when I was a teenager, took lessons in school and had an electric kit I adored. I’d drum every night just for fun to songs I knew. Over the years my neighbours got annoyed though and I had to be more purposeful with when I could practice, then I started working and I had little time, and since I moved out I’ve been living in shared accommodation and just find it would be rude for me to even try.

I’d really like to get back into it but just for fun, I don’t want to take lessons again for a while just cus it’s so expensive and I wouldnt be free to do whatever I wanted. I’m based in the UK near Manchester and was looking at pirate studios as they have rehearsal rooms but I noticed they suggest you bring your own hi hat clutch and stuff so seems like it’d be a lot of set up.

I was wondering if anyone knew about ways or ideas to ease back in without costing me a fortune or a lot in set up, ideally I’d love to get another go on an electric kit but it’s just unfeasible in my living situation. I’m top floor bedroom so everyone underneath would hear my kick and I dont plan on making enemies! I will head over to the pirate studios to see what their deal is if nothing else, I might have a spare clutch somewhere just imagining taking it on the tram would be a pain lol

i was trying out some heavier sticks…VF American Classic Extreme 5BN. i usually play VF Dave Weckl 5As. i am not sure if i like the way they feel, so please share your recs for heavier sticks.

but also, looking for feedback on my posture/technique overall. i am an old who used to play a lot but gave it up when the kids appeared. recently decided i want to really focus on becoming better. i know my kick beater is “highly active” between beats. but what else do you see in my mechanics?

Trying to decide between these 2 Tamas. Black one is a RockStar from late 90’s early 2000’s MIT and the Purple Pearled is an Imperial Star most likely late 70’s maybe early 80’s MIJ. Both missing snares but I have spare ones.
I’m trying to figure out which one to keep. Both kits has 3 toms. Different sizes tho.

Electric or acoustic, electrics are generally cheaper but acoustics are preferable, i dont know whichever
