I recently managed to find this amazing rare Laura Ashley 70s corduroy coat on ebay. I love the deep blue-toned purple, I would love it even more if it was more burgundy/plum. (see second picture). I don't think that exact colour is achievable because it's too light, but I love the tone of it.

It's really hard to photograph the purple colour. It comes out pretty luminescent blue/purple but it's definitely a true purple. The 4th picture comes closest to the irl colour.

The outer shell composition is: 88% cotton, 12% Modal

Inner: 100% polyester (but I don't need the dye to stick to this and match the outside necessarily)

The coat weighs 1,4 kg (3 lbs, 1.4 oz)

I don't have a large enough pot to dye it on a stovetop so would be using a washing machine.

I've found a shop that sells rit dyes and ships to me.

I'm not planning on wearing the fabric belt that comes with it so could easily use it for dyeing experiments.

Any ideas or experiences with a colour-project like this?

I have had reasonable luck with Rit on nylon. I prefer citric acid to vinegar both for smell and results.

Bought this cotton top recently but I’m not a fan of the apricot colour. I was considering using Dharma’s procion dyes, specifically Dutch Chocolate, to get the body to be dark brown instead. I’ve never dyed clothes before so I’m unsure how straightforward this will be. Anybody have advice on how to dye this, especially with the stripes on the original piece? Also, how much dye would I realistically need to buy?

This shirt is for my boyfriends daughter. It is polyester. She wants it changed to color that also matches the gold embellishment in the center. I have the Rit dye remover. But how many times can I do it? And how to ensure that it works?

Originally purchased rit dye more because I mistakenly missed the part where the tag says “silk” and assumed it was all synthetic fibers. I spent very little on the corset itself but was hoping to make it a nice aqua color for the ren faire! Do I even buy this? I would love to have it a dark red or black for a gothic themed ball. How will the decals take?

This is my second attempt dyeing this dress after the color all washed out yesterday (I kept running into issues and I think the water got too cold). I clearly overcompensated 🥲

I was aiming for a really light sage green, similar to the ribbon in the photo, but was nervous the actual Rit sage was too blue, so I used a combo of taupe, kelly green, and marigold (leftover from another project). I ran out of taupe on this attempt, and think I added too much green.

Unfortunately I did already use Rit color fixative thinking more color would come out in the rinse. Would a dye remover be able to lift some of the color without having to start completely from scratch? And should I get more taupe or another color to bring down the saturation? Any advice would be appreciated.
I can’t use the stovetop so it’s either a bucket or top-loading washing machine. The dress is 100% rayon.

I thought I'd start posting my dye projects because I like seeing finished projects and results on here!

I dyed the fabric and lace with Jacquard procion mx dyes, and sewed these pants. The main fabric was a thrifted cotton curtain. The lace was from my mom's stash, it dyed just fine so I think it's at least mostly cotton. Both were white to begin with.

I can answer more questions on my process if needed, but I basically followed the standard procion dye process. The green was dyed at 1.5% WOF, then 2.25% because I didn't love the first shade. The lace was dyed at 2%.

The green sections are silk organza, the purple is cotton, and the fuschia flowers are polyester (I'm aware the polyester won't take dye).

I'm hoping to dye the green and purple sections much darker shades of green and purple. I was thinking of using procion MX charcoal MX-G as I've already got it (I've also got some warm black, but probably not enough).

I've dyed cotton and linen before but never silk, and I'm not sure how to approach a dress like this where there's a mixture of animal and plant fibres.

Should I use citric acid and heat it on the stove? Or soda ash and no heat? How can I avoid damaging the silk?

Edit: please stop posting to tell me not to dye it, or that it will come out muted. I WANT it to be muted, that's the whole point. I made the dress so I reserve the right to risk messing it up. I know you can't spot dye - that's exactly why I made this post to ask what method to use given the mixed fabrics.

It's really weird that a dyeing subreddit is so full of people trying to persuade other people not to dye things!

So, first of all, I'm a superrrr newbie to dyeing. I've done some solid colors and some basic tie dyeing in the past but that's about it. I recently got a white denim (cotton) jumpsuit and I had this idea to dye it black (or dark grey) and have a bunch of colorful spots peeking out, kind of like an oil slick/peek-a-boo type of situation. To be clear, I don't necessarily want the colors to be iridescent, but that's the closest comparison to what I'm thinking of that I could reasonably articulate. The best that I can kind of come up with is doing a spatter dye of some colors, waiting for it to set and dry, and then doing some black splatter on top of that, but that doesn't really seem like it'll achieve what I'm looking for.

Thoughts? Ideas? Also, if you've seen any images that vaguely sound like this idea, I would love to see that!

I thrifted this 100% linen dress that fits like a dream. However, I am not a fan of the salmon/peach color. I don’t want to just dye it black, but I don’t know what other colors I could do starting with this peach base.
Any suggestions?

I have this dress that I love the fit off but I hate the yellow, grey, white, black combo. So I was thinking of dyeing it but I'm not sure what color would work best. (I don't mind the pattern, I know that it'll probably remain after I dye it). I want black to be my last resource, because I would like some color. thanks 😊.

P.s. it is 97% cotton 3% spandex and the lining is 100% polyester

I love these trousers so much, but they're totally see through. Wanted to see if some dye on the white would solve this - I don't want to mess with the green. Fabric is polyester.

I have three items I want to dye black (boring, I know). The first is a 60% cotton, 40% recycled polyester sweater thats black but has been sun bleached. The second is 100% polyester pants that are dark brown and have elastic in the waistband. The third are black jeans that are 97% cotton, 3% elastane and could just use a refresh.

Which items would you try to dye and which would you not risk? I will get a stockpot so I can use the stovetop method. Should I buy both regular dye and DyeMore? Can I dye any of these items together?

Edit: really helpful comments. Thanks! My alternative is to forget about the pants and accept them as they are, but for the sweater, I might try bleach dying it in some sort of pattern or spray to make the bleaching look more intentional.

So this might be a long shot or very much not worth the effort, but I am sure ages ago I saw a video about someone rinsing off a hand dyed table cloth that had a very specific dye/colour they were after, and they managed to re-use the dye somehow.

I have just rinsed a brand new dress from Tree of Life and OH BOY I have never seen so much dye come out of a garment before (I am usually an op-shop person where I can, and have never explored with dye craftiness yet myself). And I was wondering if it was possible/worth the effort of somehow recovering the rinsed off dye? Thanks!

EDIT: Actually, while I'm here, do I need any knowledge about the amount of dye this dress shed? Like, should I rinse it (cold water?) a few more times before wearing it? Or just leave it? Ps, I would probably try to hand wash this dress as its lacy and fancy (for me) if that impacte at all? I have no idea what Im doing as you can probably tell haha

First photo depicts the original denim jacket prior to dyeing. Second photo depicts the original denim jacket on the left side AFTER dyeing, and a SEPARATE faded black denim jacket to the right, to serve as a color reference. Reddit processed the images incorrectly and clarifying labels were lost!

I want to preface this by saying that I *did* research, I swear! I spoke to my mother, a family friend who is a sewing teacher, and staff at the fabric supply store. All of them had prior experience with the Dylon washing machine pods, and highly recommended it. I also made sure to confirm that the product was a fiber-reactive dye, and saw great reviews online.

I attempted to dye this classic blue denim jacket black, with the Dylon Intense Black washing machine pod. The jacket was 610 grams dry, and Dylon claims that best result would be with 600 grams, with a lighter dye-effect up to 1200 grams. I figured that 610 was quite close to best result-territory. Dylon also of course stated that natural fibers would perform the best, and I confirmed that my jacket is 100% cotton (excluding the metal hardware and thread, of course).

I followed the instructions to an absolute T, and when pulling the jacket out from the washing machine after the post-dye run, I did notice that it was still quite blue, and that was when still wet. Not feeling very promising. After letting it dry, and hanging it next to my other denim jacket that's a slightly faded black color, I burst into some kind of misery-induced laughter.

Now, I will commend it some. It's a *beautifully* even color, and a very satisfying shade for denim. But it is in no way close to black. I guess I should have done wayyyyyy more research, because while I found pages and pages of people singing Dylon's praises with cotton fabrics, it seems that denim specifically (and specifically trying to achieve black) is considered a bit of a lost cause.

I'm tagging this as "general question" (because it sure as hell isn't "I made this!"-material), but I guess my post is a combo of a cry for help and a heads-up to others who may come across this!

I have some 100% cotton bedding (duvet cover, pillow cases, fabric pictured in second photo) that is a raspberry red (pink and purple hues). I’d like it to be red with more orange in it.

On the Procion colour chart, it’s closest to number 40/42 fuchsia/raspberry. I’d like it to be 32, carmine red.

Is such a thing even possible?

Should I just try the dye colour of the target I want, or should I overshoot and go more orange?

Does anyone have any particular dye brand suggestions? Or general tips? I’m new to dyeing.

I tried my hand at dyeing this bamboo viscose sheet a dark blue using Jacquard Procion MX fiber reactive dye in the color Midnight Blue. I followed the instructions on their website for dark colors, with the following measurements for 2 pounds of fabric: 4 TBS dye, 8 cups of non-iodonized salt, 1/2 cup soda ash, ~6 gallons of 110F water. I did what the instructions suggested and doubled the amount of salt. I feel like I didn't get a very intense color for how much reagents I put in there. Is there a special trick to getting deep blue to come out? Thank you for your wisdom!

does anyone know how I would go about dyeing a pair of bleached(nearly white) jeans into something sort of close to the photo? im looking for a way to dye the pants both black and red and for it to look kind of dirty/rusty. I'm pretty new to dyeing my own stuff so any advice would be appreciated.

I am obsessed with the Nili Lotan cami gown; I want a black one but can only find second hand in other colors - white, emerald, deep navy, maroon, etc etc. I’ve never dyed silk before, would it be difficult to seamlessly dye one of the other colors black, or should I just purchase a new one in black? (~$400 less to buy them used lol so hoping to save!)

Please help I’ve never dyed anything before. I already have this dress and I need a black dress for my friend’s wedding so I would rather dye something I already have than buy a whole new dress if possible.
It says floral burnout as the material and google says that’s polyester which I know is harder to dye…

I have a vintage dress ( 20 years old)
It has some small marks which I just don’t know if I can fix them.

The dress is made from 57% metal, 22% polyester 21% viscose

As from the pictures it is designed to have an interesting fabric texture due to the metal component.

The spots are from being stored? I don’t know.

I have tried washing with a paste made from napisan- which didn’t do anything.

I’m wondering if the only way around this would be to re dye the dress the same kind of green.

Has anyone dyed fabric like this before?
My goal is to ideally remove the marks without dye.
