Produce Plus: Free Produce

Hello,

I've been attending the Produce Plus events for a couple months now. Was unemployed up until about a month ago. I've found that friends of mine that have been receiving SNAP benefits for years did not know about Produce Plus. As someone who has medically necessary dietary restrictions, I'm forever grateful to the DHS worker who did my SNAP application and told me about this.

This is a free program put on by Food For Lane County that anyone can participate in. You do not need to be receiving or qualify for SNAP benefits to attend and take what you need. Anyone can show up. The only information they ask for is for you to scribble a 'signature' on a sign in sheet and to know how many people you're feeding with the food.

You can check the FFLC website, at the bottom of the list of food pantries, and it will show you all of the Produce Plus dates/times/locations. You basically just walk thru and take the produce that you want. Sometimes they will limit quantity on high demand items like watermelons or avocados depending on how many they have. Most of the produce is organic if that's your thing too.

There are 3 every week in my calendar:

Tuesday's at 3pm

At Kokwel Wellness Center (in the parking lot near Burger King and in front of Albertsons on River road).

Wednesday's at 10am

At the red barn behind Kalapuya and Prairie Mountain, on Patriot Way.

Thursday's at 1pm

At the ODHS Family Wellness Center on W11th.

I recommend arriving early to wait in line if you're able to, or at the very least no later than 15-30 minutes after the start time, as things can go quickly.

The one on Tuesdays is my favorite. Huge variety of produce. I cannot have gluten but they always have infinite loaves of bread and sometimes baked goods (an occasional loaf of gluten free bread for me).

The one on Wednesdays typically will have 1-2 dairy products. Smaller variety of produce but different stuff than what's typically at the one on Tue. Have not been able to make it to the one on Thur. at a reasonable time.

Things are tough for a lot of people right now and there are so many people unemployed and struggling. Produce Plus is the only reason I've eaten some weeks/months.

Stay safe and please share this info with those in your life that could use it!

Who is hiring? (Monthly jobs thread)

Welcome to the monthly jobs thread! If you're aware of any job openings, please share them here for eager job-seekers in the Eugene/Springfield area!

And if you're an employer looking to hire, feel free to share any openings you have.

The rules

  • All top-level comments MUST be a link or a description of a job opening or openings in the Eugene/Springfield area
  • Optionally, start your comment with a tag to indicate what type of offering it is. For example:"[Restaurant] Looking for a new cook!""[Tech] Now hiring new technical support reps!""[Manufacturing] Need production line workers!"

Good luck!

A little over a year ago, my best friend and I founded a non-profit housing agency to serve Lane County - Cascades Community Placement Services

CCPS started as a tiny offshoot of an activist group, but we are now an IRS-official 501c3. We connect vulnerable folks in need with a vetted community housing network, provide relocation aid, and flexibly assist individuals to maximize the resources available to them. Our mission is to aid and support under-resourced folks who come to Eugene to find stability, safety, and acceptance.

Every week, we are saving lives in Eugene and Lane County. We provide essential boots on the ground casework and aid that our government cannot or will not provide.

In the world that we are trying to create, CCPS would not need to exist. But so long as the horrors persist, so will we.

We can't do this alone. CCPS has always been (and always will be) a grassroots, community-supported harm-reduction project for our most vulnerable neighbors in Lane County.

If you've been looking for the right opportunity to make our world just a little bit better, please consider supporting our efforts. If you've ever wondered "what you would have done" during the Holocaust, or American slavery... you are already doing it right now.

CCPS needs hosts. If you have a spare bedroom, couch, auxiliary dwelling, or other suitable space for someone to live while they get back on their feet... We need you. If you have questions about this process, I'm happy to share more in comments or DMs. You can fill out our host inquiry form here.

If you'd like to make a recurring donation to CCPS, click this link and checkout via Stripe. You can adjust the quantity to the dollar amount that feels right to you.

If a one-time donation is more your thing, click here.

Lost & Found Hoping to save someone's car from being towed

All hands on deck, to help some space cadet in need.

Someone left their car in the QuikTrip parking lot, next to Sundance, since Sunday night. Presuming someone was spacing, walked home forgetting their car (I have done this), and currently thinks their car has been stolen.

If this is your stoner friend's car (mirror lainyard says class of 2020), please let them know to pick it up from the parking lot on the corner of 24th and Hilyard pronto before it gets towed.

Lost & Found Somebody stole my 81 year old grandpas bike

This happened at the Albertsons on Coburg Road in Eugene, Oregon, on August 31st around 7:00 p.m. This homeless guy who stole my grandpa’s bike walked up to him while he was at his bike before he was going to head in to buy groceries, and he asked if he could use my grandpas id to go buy drugs at the pharmacy (just a completely fried individual to think of even doing that thinking it would work), but anyway, my grandpa said no to him, and when my grandpa walked back out to his bike, the guy rode off on it and yelled “that’s karma.”

Anyway, I thought this might worth posting here, or you might have seen this bike. I thought I should post it somewhere.

Thanks!

LTD Bus driver - river road to downtown. There’s this older white dude with long hair and a super crappy beard to go with it. Thus jerk will watch people get on the bus, and the SLAM the gas pedal, throwing us around as passengers.

First time, I thought “fluke” 10th time, I’m thinking “is this guy an asshole, is he a drunk”

Tomatoes and rain??

With a bunch of rain expected this week, what are you gardeners doing with your tomatoes which haven't ripened yet? I'm imagining all this moisture will be a recipe for splitting and mold issues. Time to pick everything turning color and bring it in? Pull up the whole plants and hang them inside? Throw a tarp over the top? Throw up your hands in despair? Teach me please!

Beware of woman at Barger winco

I was there last week and a woman stopped me in her car and said she was going through a domestic abuse situation and needed gas money to get to Portland because he stole her purse etc. I am a recovering addict of over a year and a half and I’ve been in situations similar. I’m an extreme empath and I feel for people in situations I can relate to. Come today I’m walking out and she pulled the same exact card on me like she had no remembrance of me giving her 20 dollars last week when I have almost no money right now anyways. It just made my stomach sink and made me feel sick that people do this. I’m not unaware that people suck but when trying to help other people and giving the last of what I have to help it really does make an impact and makes me personally feel less like I can give people opportunities which is unfortunate. Don’t be like this woman and also I guess just don’t believe her if you run into her.

Smoke is from the Austin fire near the Clackamas forest service area

Just pull up the national weather service satellite maps and use the watch duty app.

https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/sector.php?sat=G17&sector=pnw

You can see wind direction travel and a LOT more with really basic googling people.

Also alleged it's extra bad because the forest service is actively utilizing burnouts (starting fires to cut fuel so the main burns out before it gets there)

Flora Are there any small women owned dispensaries in the area?

Just as the title says, I’m looking for small, like one store, women owned businesses in town, and am especially looking for a woman owned dispensary that’s still in the earlier stages of growing their company.
Women of color businesses are a bonus too! Or veterans!
Really just wanna get to know this area better and get nestled into the community. Thanks!

Edited to add:

Thanks again for the feedback folks!
