Once again, I met some acquaintances over the weekend who made comments on my weight. Thankfully this time it was not offensive. I see them semi-frequently, and they said, "You've lost more weight since we last saw you!" I'm like, "No, I haven't." They didn't believe. I know for sure though, because I track my weight, and this entire year it's been within a band of 3 kgs.

I know my weight loss is surprising to people. A man in his 50s is supposed to be fat and not have a 28 inch waist. Still, I wonder, do people really pay so much attention to other people's weight? I sure don't. The vast majority of people I know, if they told me they had lost or gained weight, I wouldn't have noticed. I simply don't track other people's weight. But a lot of people notice if I lose so much as a kilo.

In other words: "Aunty, are you checking out my butt? Because it seems like you're doing an awful lot of noticing."

Also: it makes me extremely uncomfortable when fat people start talking about weight. Like what am I supposed to say? "Hey JB, you've lost weight!" "Hi there friend, I guess you haven't?"

Tbh, when I see people, most are fat. It isn't something noteworthy to me anymore as I've normalized how many people are fat and those numbers are increasing all the time.

However, if I see someone who's not fat, and objectively fit, I take notice. It's really uncommon.

It’s the same thing that happened with cars: they’ve gotten bigger and bigger over time, to the point where a car from 30 years ago feels tiny today. We’re heading toward a point where only morbidly obese people will be considered fat.

We're in the same age-range, and yes I would say that people do pay attention, particularly when there is a transformation. I was out in DC visiting friends last month and I was definitely the subject of conversation, and I lost my weight 8 years ago. Now I have added a decent amount of muscle, but I have had my general "shape" for quite some time.

Women I'm dating also ask about my physique and again I'm no mass monster, but it's of course obvious I keep myself fit. Obviously I'm not complaining about women complimenting me, but it again just goes to show that people are noticing.

I really enjoy hanging with my current friend group, but some of them are on the noticeably heavy side and it can bleed into other activities.

During our most recent outing, we went to the movies at a roughly 25-year-old theater (established in the early 2000s), and several of them kept complaining about how small the seats were. Some of them have also gained a massive amount of weight over the past year.

In my last post I mentioned that I’d gone a whole week without a binge, while eating pretty well. And technically, the no-binge streak is still going!

But today I had some INSANE cravings. I had breakfast and lunch all planned out, but somehow I ended up eating cookies for both breakfast and lunch, ice cream for dessert, and a toastie with ham and processed cheese slices for dinner.

Technically, I still hit my calories and macros, got enough protein, and I’m only 2g under my fiber goal. So technically, I didn’t “fail” at anything.

But I still feel really guilty because I didn’t eat a single fruit or vegetable today. That’s so unlike me. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is more important to me than hitting my calories or macros perfectly, so I’m struggling a bit with the fact that I basically ate like a toddler today.

I honestly don’t even understand where these cravings came from. They were SO strong, and I just couldn’t bring myself to eat the food I had prepared.

If it weren’t literally impossible, I’d probably think I was pregnant at this point.

Regarding the "we're all influenced by patriarchy" argument, I largely agree, but I feel like I'm increasingly seeing this argument used as a derailment tactic anytime I see women push back against fat logic in general.

>Insist women aren't meant to be 300+ pounds? Brainwashed by patriarchy.

>Prefer a thin/fit partner to one significantly fatter than yourself? Brainwashed by patriarchy.

>Talking about the increased hygiene and mobility issues that come with carrying around increased amounts of excess adipose? Brainwashed by patriarchy.

>Care about your looks in any way instead of just seeing your body as a separate tool or shell that "does" things? Brainwashed by patriarchy.

It’s the ultimate thought-terminating cliché, because if you try to argue against it, they’ll just dig their heels in harder and essentially repeat the same statement with more flowery, pseudointellectual language.

Edit to expand on my thoughts here: I also hate it because in a lot of cases, it’s used in a way that denies women autonomy and insists that we do the things we do solely because we’re brainwashed robots under the spell of the patriarchy. I, like you, do agree with the statement broadly, we do live in a patriarchal society and that should absolutely be talked about. But for example, the bit about caring about your looks? I can only speak for myself here, but I do acknowledge that like every woman, I’ve felt pressured to look a certain way because of what society dictates. That’s not the entire story, though - I also like my body to look a certain way, or certain styles of clothing, makeup, etc. because I enjoy those things. To insist that any woman who cares about her looks is a brainwashed automaton and/or helpless little girl child is, quite frankly, fucking insulting.

It's incredibly insulting. As if we women don't have functioning brains under our own control. Do we live in a patriarchy? Yes. We do. Are we helpless in the face of that? No. We are not.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about how as a young adult I was told I needed to “unlearn” and “re-educate” myself, and how I always thought it was bullshit but very much got sucked into some weird social justice stuff because resisting that “unlearning” was somehow evidence of being an unfeeling person who lacks empathy. And so much of it was BULLSHIT.

Had a day over the weekend where my friend came over and we imitated sloths. Sat on the couch, ordered in for both lunch and dinner, watched crappy TV, and didn't really move. Very much needed, we've both had a rough time of it lately

One thing I did notice, though, is that the food was... meh? All that sugar and salt was too much. I don't really do takeaway anymore but on the rare occasion I do then I go all out. It's one day, it's fine. But it's honestly been months since the last time I ordered in. It wasn't even that awful, just bagels for lunch and burgers for dinner. I could barely finish it, felt so heavy and bloated, absolutely exhausted (from an arduous day of sitting on the couch for hours), woke up incredibly thirsty in the middle of the night, and the next day I relished in my usual late morning smoothie.

It's sad to think that people feel like this all the time.

I have an endoscopy and colonoscopy tomorrow. My paternal unit's lost his marbles and decided my spouse is public enemy number 1 because [drumroll] both of them use their phones at the dinner table and he doesn't like that we're not bowing and scraping and catering to his big manly feelings 😒 we haven't had the financial means to foot the bills for meals with him and it turns out that been festering hard

Sad and mad about it, but at least now I know where we stand so I can work towards letting go. He has the right to not want to foot the bill all the time, but I also have the right to not want to do regular meals with someone who's not very good company most of the time. Like not having to pay for it was one of the few perks to the relationship or lack thereof, and it helped amidst a very awful couple of years. Guess I'm flushing out more than just my digestive system and leaving it all behind in August :(

I am doing the weigh-yourself-daily thing and taking the 10 day low as my real weight, and it is definitely a lot better because of how much your weight can vary. However, it is slightly maddening after a 1,500 calories deficit day to step on the scale and have it unceremoniously declare you've gained three pounds. But it would be more maddening to have the misfortune of catching myself at the worst time four weeks in a row and thinking I was achieving nothing, which is what's happened to me before.

I teach in SEA, term 1 we do 20 weeks no break (not including PD weeks). I'm on week 17. I am tired. I just need some time off. So close. I had to skip the gym because I'd get hurt if I tried to lift being so exhausted. If I need to take this week off to recover, so be it.
