Discussion Linux Support MUST remain!
We cannot allow Linux support to be dropped because some basement dwelling cheaters might be using Linux to cheat. When does Windows get dropped for the same? It makes absolutely no sense.
I would rather have months of no content than lose our Linux brothers in arms if funding is an issue and I am sure many agree. Save Linux Support!

It's such a weird move especially since like 50% of people still use Windows 10 and refuse to move on to 11.
Most of my gamer friends have actively voiced that if they were to ever change their system/OS it would be a transition to Linux.
Cutting Linux off is a move game studios will sorely regret in 10 years when not having Linux support will mean not reaching an ever increasing amount of players.

I thought that was the case too, but I took a look at the steam hardware survey last night and the split rn is 70% W11, 23% W10, 2% MacOS, and 4% Linux.
I really expected more people to still be on Windows 10 with me

Huh, I guess that number has seen a significant change since last I checked

Instead of actually banning cheaters they would rather cut support from Linux.
They are willing to lose a decent chunk of their player base than put in effort to ban cheaters which will still be there.

This isn't correct though. They are building a stronger anticheat, that isn't supported on Linux.
You're allowed to be upset about dropping the Linux support, but it's incorrect to frame it by saying dropping Linux support does nothing about cheating.

Oh ok I didn't know that

Yeah, it's a tradeoff Ubi is deliberately making. Reduce the number of complaints about cheating like this one on the front page right now, but the cost is an increase of complaints about lack of Linux support.
This is, of course, all dependent on seeing what the new anticheat actually accomplishes. I would expect it could at least take care of scripters, but it might be harder to detect lagswitchers, especially if the lagswitch is a hardware lagswitch. Or, it could be total Ubi spaghet code and not ban anything and we lose a chunk of the playerbase for nothing. We'll have to see.

The problem we are seeing is that anti-cheat doesn't seem to be effective. Both Battlefield 6 and GTA online have problems with cheaters, and none of them support Linux because of their harsh anti-cheat. Battlefield 6 even has the most extreme anti-cheat on the market, and they still have problems. Ubi isn't doing a trade-off, this is going to remove part of the player base while keeping the problem they are "trying" to solve. There are better ways to deal with cheaters.

It's too early to make this claim so definitively regarding For Honor.

No other major studio has managed to deal with their cheating problems by implementing a tougher anti-cheat. You mean to tell me that Ubisoft, who can't even balance their own creations, are going to create an anti-cheat better than any other studio out there?

Ya a tradeoff, let's let them spend the money buy a character get some cosmetics then at the last minute with little heads up let them all know that there's going to be continued support but nope not for them. I bet they still loved there money though. Not yelling at you specifically but it's just such a damn shady practice and I'm not even a Linux user, but I have friends who are my brother is.

If full support isn't possible, I hope they at least let us play casual modes while locking Linux out of ranked matchmaking

I agree. I take cheaters in rank everday over dropping linux user for " anti cheat" reason that will anyway being workaround on windows anyway. The community is small, let's not drop a chunk behind

While I agree with you, how does one "not allow Linux support to be dropped"?

The same way the community did back in the day to get the devs to be less opaque about what they're doing, a blackout lasting at least a week. It's also why the Warrior's den streams are even a thing in the first place as if not for the blackout those streams would never happen (among the other issues the blackout seeked to solve).
Blackout 2.0 where the winning move is to not play the game.

This community actually stood their ground once?

It's not because cheaters might be using linux.
It's because they're moving to a new type of anti-cheat, which doesn't work on linux devices.
I still agree with the sentiment of the post though. The new anti-cheat won't stop people on PC from finding a way to bypass it and cheat anyways...

They are probably removing linux to change the anti cheat. Linux can't support kernel level anti cheats. Which is why games they have them can't run on Linux. That's my assumption if they are removing linux to fix cheating. Then I assume they will be updating the anti cheat to be kernel level which will make cheating a lot harder.

u/CatsAndCapybaras Nobushi 12h ago
Kernel level anticheat does little to combat cheating. EAC is a kernel anticheat and it's a joke. They may see an initial decline, but within 2 weeks all those shitters will be back. But the honest linux players cannot rejoin the game.

It's such a weird move cheaters arent going to dissapear if you remove linux support, they're just going to make the same scripts on windows. It's a temporary solution at best.
