Some downtown Toronto roads are going to be looking different soon.

Earlier this month, Ontario’s highest court ruled that tearing out Toronto’s main downtown bike lanes does not violate Charter rights, clearing the way for their removal.

On Tuesday, the government announced that it has issued a request for proposals from contractors, launching the process to remove the bikes lanes along Bloor Street, Yonge Street and University Avenue.

Premier Doug Ford‘s government first introduced legislation in 2024 to remove those bike lanes, claiming they contributed to traffic congestion in the downtown core.

The researchers analyze dispatch records from the Fire Department of New York City for roughly half a million EMS incidents in 2024–2025, combined with traffic camera data from New York University’s C2SMART research center that measure vehicle, truck, pedestrian, and bicycle density at fixed locations near the boundary. Within a 5-kilometer band around the boundary, hospital transport time—the interval between an ambulance leaving the incident scene and arriving at a hospital—fell by about 54–59 seconds, an improvement of roughly 8 percent relative to the pre-policy average of about 12 minutes. Total EMS travel time, combining response to the scene and transport to the hospital, declined by nearly 63–70 seconds, or almost 5–6 percent. Travel time to the incident scene itself fell by a smaller and less precisely estimated amount, about 7–9 seconds or 2 percent. Prior research has found that longer EMS response times are associated with higher 90-day mortality rates for the patients.

First off, calm down farmer and rancher snowflakes - not talking about people who live in rural areas were the land is put to productive/economic use. I'm talking about those ranchettes and McMansions that are primarily lawns. And what isn't a lawn is usually taken up with six cars for their family of five, a dead RV, a fifth wheel, a boat that gets used twice a year, and so on.

What do people in these areas do besides daily drive to and from civilization? Want to visit friends or be social? Gotta drive for that. Need groceries? Get in the car. Want to take the dog for a walk? Buckle up, buckaroos. Got a job? Head on in to the big smoke to work your 9-5 - every fucking day.

For real though, why do homes in these areas exist beyond 1) they can afford it, 2) they love buying/driving cars, and 3) perceived rurality?! What am I missing? Some one help rationalize this selfish lifestyle to me...

This is a former railroad turned into multi-use trail. No cars allowed. It will finish around 22 miles, or 35km. About 17mi/27km is done now. Hundreds to thousands of people use it on nice days and it's become the epicenter of the city's social life.

Pretty good evidence that protected infrastructure pays back

I’ve been an avid pedestrian for a long time, walking as often as I could when my destination was within range. I’ve been advocating for public transportation in conversation and with my local representatives, but I still mostly used my car for transportation… until this month! I bought a cheap used bike and rode the bus for the first time since probably 2017, and I’m loving it! Public transportation in my area has a notorious reputation for being slow. I finally had extra time to experiment with it, and it was actually about the same commute time as driving but without the stress and danger from other drivers. I got to read a book during my commute instead of mentally exhausting myself trying to stay alive in my car. I’ve had 3 bikes stolen in the past, which is why I went without one for so long. I figure this one will go too, but for $35 at the local bike repair shop it’s been worth it to cruise happily around my neighborhood.

That’s it. Just a really good month, and some joy at aligning my values more with my daily habits. Thanks to this sub for encouraging me along the Fuck Cars journey!

So the cursed algorithms know too much about me and keep pushing obscure local stories from the other side of the world to me. Amongst them this story about a town in North Carolina that is suing a person for illegally operating a paid parking lot on her residential property.

I watched the thing and explored on street view and some other sources and the whole thing is so bizarre to me.

First, why do these students drive to school at all? I looked up the attendance zone map to understand the sort of trips these kids have to do to go to school and the furthest point is 5 miles away. Some isolated houses are further away. But the majority of kids seem to live 15 minutes cycling distance from their school. A good proportion can walk 15 minutes tops and be there for free.

Now I know that horrible road is probably super deadly but there is a well separated pavement besides it where kids could walk and cycle safely. Only crossing is dangerous but it seems the place they park at also involves crossing a death boulevard without a crossing so I don’t see parents being reassured by this.

The school already has 5 or 6 parking lots, one of them massive. How much parking do they really need?

If they insist on driving cars instead of walking, can’t they at least get together into a car? Take turns and save on petrol, wear and parking.

Why would parents pay for cars to these kids instead of saving the money for something more valuable?

Now the other layer of confusion is why is it so controversial that the town doesn’t want a residential property to be used as parking? Isn’t strict zoning the very reason why people move to these cookie cutter single use, service-deprived neighbourhoods?

The whole thing is so strange.

I'm curious if it was easy or hard to find an Academic, Activist, Industry Rep, City Planner, and Politician to dump on bollards. We need more bollards, placed everywhere that drivers might slam their steel battering rams up on the sidewalk.

The organization also said nine people have been killed in hit-and-run crashes across New York City in the last two weeks and noted that hundreds of advocates recently gathered outside City Hall to demand stronger action to address traffic violence.

I’ve passed by this bike rack many times. At first I thought its design was just for fun, but now I see why it’s designed this way!

I'm interested in how differently urbanist people see public transport. Imo, every mode of transport (hot take: even cars sometimes) has its place, but surely everyone has their favorite.

Mine are absolutely (e)bikes and trains. I live in Rotterdam, and even tho we have an extensive network of trams, buses, and metro, I rarely ever use them. One reason is prices, but also I find even the most thoughtful and expansive public network system to be at least somewhat limiting. Bikes are like urban cars in the sense that you can ride whenever you want, wherever you want, however you want. And riding a bike in a twilight city in the rain has to be the most soul-freeing experience in my life.

Here in Minneapolis, my friend Philip was recently riding his e-scooter down Como Ave. (the main drag in my neighborhood). Philip doesn’t think he did anything specific to anger the driver, but somehow the driver became angry with him, chased him for half a mile, and then intentionally ran him over in the alleyway behind the bar where he works. He has a fractured leg and is in a good deal of pain.

Philip is an excellent cook and well loved by the patrons of Como Tap. All around, he’s just a good guy.

The Minneapolis Police declined to investigate this crime.

I'm so happy to be back on my bike. It's so much less stressful than driving.

It's not a controversial opinion in my area to say that people are driving recklessly and dangerously, more than in previous years. I think many, if not most, people would agree with that.

But what frustrates me are the "solutions."

I'm like, let's make red light and speeding cameras legal (they're illegal in SC) and road diet every bloated stroad! Like, when the situation is this bad (we're 3rd most dangerous for drivers in the nation), you need to use ALL the proven tools until it gets better.

But what most people around here suggest are the following:

1) Everyone please be nice and drive good of your own free will (like in the NextDoor post below).

2) Mebbe hire more traffic cops.

3) Mebbe stop building houses since population growth = more cars

The problem with the first "solution" is that it's nothing. "Everybody please be good now" is not a policy.

The problem with the second "solution" is that you could never in a million years hire enough cops to put a dent in the problem. When you have thousands of lane miles and a few dozen cops (who are mostly busy with other crime stuff and donuts presumably), how effective can you expect this to be? It's unrealistic.

The problem with the third "solution" is that it's not townhomes driving 30 over the speed limit; it's cars and trucks. The whole "somehow reduce the population to solve all our problems" thing is stupid.

It's just maddening to have everyone recognize the same problem for YEARS and never have any constructive or meaningful progress towards a resolution.

The beauty of this street is recognized by seemingly everyone, carbrain or otherwise. And yet we apparently have to make it accessible to cars. I guess it would've been too much to simply divert the traffic down any of the surrounding streets.
