Honestly never doubt Hypergryph with their collabs because they can put a lot of effort into it.

I admit I haven't done the P5X story enough to get to the P3 collab, but... Is it that bad?

Short answer, not really.
Long answer, the plot is just kinda bland, certainly a far cry from what you'd expect from the current P5X story quality, the best thing about it is probably the hangout scene for each S.E.E.S member, it expands their personality a bit more beyond what P3R did.
Also, if you want the collab story to feel more natural, play the main story up until Riko joins your team, as she is the one who invites the protag to Port Island.

It is just them hanging out and going "wow our teams are so similar"

As for the gameplay side, it is the mandatory Roguelike gamemode that no one touches once you claim all the rewards

you dont need to do p5x to do previous collab events though collab stories aint exactly the main priority so the story is rather bland but if you mean p5x story after palace 2 it picks up afterwards because of the main persona writers which makes it peak though gacha gameplay still in there though which bothers some people coming from persona games
