If you want a serious opinion:

The story for Endfield was always good. And by that I mean the ideas behind. What was not great was the pacing and the story-telling. those things are not the story.

for example, 1.1 had a great premise but rushed the conclusion.

1.4 (the latest patch) good the pacing and story together and the storytelling was also very much improved.

If you see people say that Endfield's story is bad, then they probably didn't like the latest story (which is subjective) or are talking about past story version (i.e. when they quit).
