Coworker told me a horror story out of the blue that shook me
I’m 23M, US, gay guy. I started a new job and a new team and I’ve been getting to know my team members. I was told out of the blue by a gay coworker (I’m in the closet to everyone), about how she knew a gay Indian woman 20 years ago, and how one day she told her that she would be going back to India and gave her deeds, her will, and contacts in case she didn’t come back to the US. She never came back, and was killed by her family for being gay. Coworker just brought this up out of nowhere. I myself have an Indian family overseas I visit every year and I’m horrified about what might happen to me if they or my parents find out I’m gay. I’m supposed to focus on work the rest of the day but I feel sick.
It’s not like I’m not aware of homophobia in general or overseas, I very much am and have had online arguments with those people. I’m very aware of it. But it just feels so real and visceral having someone IRL drop that bomb on you out of nowhere. I feel like I have no future. I feel despair.
